Polo Dropped

Redford said:
That's true - and in fact he was recruited with that in mind after tagging Griffen in the juniors - but he's got no hope against a Stanton type who runs hard and wide all day and crosses the lines up and down the field over and over. Bad TAGGING match up for Polo. Bad. Prefer him on pluggers like Sam Mitchell, Scott West etc. who drop from stoppage to stoppage.

BTW, do you use a pick 20 to recruit a tagger ????
I think Polo is capable of playing on those types of players, I consider Griffen to be more of the running type of player, but I just think with his lack of AFL game time this year due to getting over his shoulder reco he doesn't have the match fitness to keep up with players like this for a whole game.

I don't think he was specifically drafted as a tagger either, but as a more defensive midfielder. Would be nice if he can become a Ling/Kirk type, but that's a fair way away from this point in time. I think he was picked as backup for someone like Cogs in case he didn't make it back from the OP. At the time we didn't know he'd have his knee injuries and he was still recovering from OP.

The writing for Dean was on the wall on Saturday when Terry dragged him and blasted him on the phone. The coach was not happy with something. Rightly too IMO. Stanton was turning the game at the time.
Polo had better work hard at his game in the ensuing weeks and force his way back into the team or he may well find himself elsewhere in '09.

I guess he had a specific instruction, like work goal side of Stanton, stay inside and forward, something like that and he didn't do it.

He finds himself on the wrong end of Terry from time to time. Blokes who bugger up but do as they're instructed usually get a go.

Agree Redders, Calthorpe, I mean Stanton is not quick but he's another Cliff Young - it's not how fast he runs it's how far.

D-Rod, McQualter went at #17 - the choice StK was planning to use on Patto. Not much in it. ;D

Trade bait. Perfect type. Was drafted in a different era which based someone's draft day status on one off efforts. Polo at 20 if he doesn't carve up Griffen. Make or break six weeks left for Polo.

Polo has a reasonable level of endurance, but he is very slow when it comes to leg speed. Has a really bad running technique too, which the club has tried to do a lot of work on to rectify.

Begs the question, who was the bright spark that used a pick 20 to recruit him? To have to teach players the basics like running and kicking is a concern.

In saying this though, Polo has been better than Tambling in the past few games as a whole.

We had the same problem with picks 16 and 36 in that Draft as well. We wonder why have such skill problems and yet we support the drafting of three picks inside 40 on prospects that have questions on kicking and on running skills.

We botched 2004.

We should bring that 2004 draft day thread back up again and see what one or two posters on the day have to say for themselves now re: picks 16, 20 and 36.

Deano has paid the price for some terrible disposals in the last 2 games.
He really needs to work on his disposal, especialy his handballing.
He has put teamates under the pump with some shocking handpasses.

Details:
Club: Wy Yung/Gippsland
DOB: 5 August 1986 Hgt: 187cm Wgt: 78kg
Position: Onballer
Natural Foot: Left

Honours:

Victoria Country 2004
All Australian 2004
Wing in TAC Cup Team of the Year 2004
National Draft Camp 2004

TAC Stats:
2002: 1 game, 0 goals, 3.0 PPG
2003: 15 games, 5 goals, 19.1 PPG
2004: 19 games, 5 goals, 24.6 PPG

Strengths: Polo is an ungainly looking but extremely effective midfielder. He works hard and just keeps finding the football in close. He is very good overhead for his size and is very good at winning the ball at stoppages and kicking it forward.

Dean will put his head over the footy, has good pace and has plenty of improvement left in him. Can do a job on an opposition player when instructed, such as Ryan Griffen in the carnival. Also has very good endurance.

Weaknesses: Polo can tend to lack poise and rush his disposal by foot rather than balancing, and some of his decision-making can be questionable. Like a lot of kids needs to put on some weight. Doesn't kick enough goals.

Footydraft.com comment: I suspect he might go a bit later than we have him, but I think he deserves to go early. Has the runs on the board and has been a big improver this year. If he can get a bit more poise into his game will be a real player.

l have seen alot of Polo this season and he is a very fit strong midfielder who was alot of the drive with McQualter to Roughhead for Gippsland Power U18s side. He is a very speedy and will be a promising player so l can tell you this lad will be a welcome bonus to Tigerland

our #1-4 picks are going to boost the club and its confidence for the future & l very happy with the outcome of the whole

Now no-one can complain in the future about us missing out on good picks like previous Fiora over Pavlich
l hope l dont have to read things like this in the future cause Miller Beck & Wallace made some good choices for our future and its up to the kids to lift to the next level themselves when they get the chance which l'm sure you will see some of these lads progress

Thoughts on Travis Cloke by evo ;D

Yeh ,he didnt play again yesterday Phantom.

I reckon he was hopless in the U18 champs myself.
He's a great size and nice long kick but thats about it.Barely a 2dd rounder I reckon.

He's one deal I'm glad we lost out on if it was going to have to be 4 year deal at $500k.

50/50/200/200.

JB might like this one from Red ;D

Kirkby: really like him. He’s one of the better defensive options. Bit of balance and poise and excellent reader of play. Good height and movement. Good hands overhead. Reasonable kick/passer.

A post by Damien Streets via Disco Stu:

Danny Meyer – A bit harsh. He has a bit more ability than many others but is
again a wingman / HFF with all that means. Give him the ball and he will cut
teams up. Don’t give him the ball and you better give him some knitting to
keep him busy.

Adam Pattison – Forwards used to run in perfectly straight lines and changing
direction was for show-offs. They didn’t need to be able to stop and start,
more just motor on at one set pace. Pattison does really well until he
actually has to be an athlete. Lots of straight lines and if the pesky
cheating forwards he is chasing change direction and suddenly find themselves
10 metres in the clear … well than is just unfair and should be banned.

Dean Polo – Remember the days when bow-legged kiddies scuttled about kicking
the ball anyway they chose and it finding its way (more or less) to where it
was intended. Polo could be quicker, he looks completely uncoordinated, you’d
never say he was classy. He does get a bit of it and keeps on going. A
little bit of Chis Hyde about him.
