I was one of the people clapping the team off the field that day.
I was genuinely pleased with their effort that day and the Eagles with their skill, toughness and experience were always odds on to get over the line even if we didn't have those couple of stuff ups at crucial times.
But Terry gave them the routine that he has done before about not good enough to have effort and lose. Maybe not quite as harsh as the famous "...I'll fair dinkum spew!" line, but I'm wondering how appropriate this approach was in hindsight. They looked disappointed with themselves walking off - I don't think they needed to be told, as they already knew.
After being relatively competitive for five games and losing, then being told your efforts were "not good enough" after getting close against a clearly better side, then the cats get away to an absolute flyer....did this just slap the drive out of them completely as a unit?
I can understand the logic of this approach sometimes as a motivator, but equally - sometimes good efforts need to be recognised as good efforts and built upon, rather than dismantled.
This is different from being mentally weak, which I know we often are. I just think this might have been the wrong approach this time. (alternatively, they should have been torn new ones after Sunday)
