Prediction- Jay Schulz 2007

Jay needs to have continuity with his football and play all season in the one position. With the recruitment of Polly, return of Willy T and the expected emergence of Luke McGuane he should be ready to assume the FF mantle. He's looked pretty sharp from what I've seen this pre season.

He also needs our midfielders to honour his leads a bit more. If he works hard and gets rewarded with some decent delivery he'll grow in confidence and should become the player many of us expect him to be.

Hughes a tilt for a couple of weeks. :hihi........................telling me you were joking BJ....................that was funny!

r7 2003 as I said his first game, got the audi 0 kicks, handballs, marks, goals but Frawley :upside probably left him on the bench all day.
r4 2004 may have got injured, can't remember, but he didn't play the next week and Richo was still out.
r6 2004 kicked 2 behinds so spent some time up forward
r14 2004 kicked 6 goals, were you aware of that one
r13 2006 kicked 3 goals

Wasn't making a statement on his practice match form, was asking a question.

Clearly I can't judge him on a full season at FF because he hasn't had one.

If his first 10 games this year are the same as the last 10 games of 2006 where he averaged 1.6 goals per game, would you give him a full season at FF or would you give Hughes a tilt for a couple of weeks?

Thanks for posting those numbers Bill.
Looks a bit different in that timeline order than your initial post. ;)

IMHO it's unfortunate Jay hasn't been given more opportunities as the key target sans Richo, but that's clearly not going to happen yet whilst the big guy has something to offer or stays fit..
I must admit though I do worry about stifling our young forward's development a little in Madcow's presence.

Back to Schulz, 1.6 goals a game(35 for the season) isn't good enough on the face of it for a FF but if Brown and Richardson are kicking plenty it may not be such an issue. As long as Jay is making a strong contribution and the forward line is functioning well, then he's Ok.

Ideally I'd like to see Sarge's output, with a full season in the forward line, at around the 50 goal mark or 2.2 goals a game. A target I think is very achievable, if he's given the opportunities, stays healthy and as taraba says our midfield looks for him.

Time will tell, but as I've said I won't defend him forever. Besides I'm Bling's pres this year. 8)

Almost a defining season for Jay Schulz and I expect considerable improvement.
I hope for his sake and more importantly the Tigers that he's able to deliver on the promises.

30 goals would be a good return for Jay.
Not getting injuryed would be best thing that could happen to him for this year.

I agree with not getting injured.

I disagree with anything less than 40 goals if he doesn't get injured.

1.6 per game x 22 games = 35 goals an acceptable return for a number three forward behind Richo and Browny.
One thing that will help to improve his scoring capacity is for our forward line to learn to spread the defenders. To often our forwards cluster around the goal square and the opposition defenders hang just outside of them so that there's bodies cluttering up space and it's easy for them to go two on one with the most obvious forward.
We need to open the bastards up down on their backline, then Richo, Browny and Schulz can work one out.

Big year for Jay.
Lets not beat around the bush.Richo while still playing will always be the go to man on the fwd line.As long as Jay does the team thing and make life a bit easier for Richo then he,s doing his job.

Your expectations are far too high
If we can have Richo with his 40-45+ goals plus the same for Browny and then have solid contributions from Pettifer, Kingsley & Schulz of 30-35 goals each then we will have a very potent and unpredictable forward line.

Well said ZG, plenty of cause for optimism.

Don't altogether agree with this, mainly because for a player of his frame and position, 5 years in the system, who will be a 50 gamer this season, will have to back up games missed by Richo, a 50 goal haul is acceptable. 35 would only be tolerable.

Do agree very much with this analysis though. And this is why I have my reservations on Schulzy as history indicates so far he is a chaser of players, not a player who is chased. This won't be lost on TW though and I expect some different work by Schulzy this year, cos if he doesn't, he'll end up as a backman where his chasing will be as big an asset as Morrison was. ;)
