Can anyone please keep us up to date on how the boys look during preseason training. I live in Shepparton and never ever get the opportunity to go and watch training. If i lived in Melbourne i certainly would. I hear training started for the Tigers on Monday. Has anyone on our messageboard managed to attend any of our sessions yet. Would just love to hear some news. Sick of cricket. Footy season cant come quickly enough.

Depends what kind of form you're after. They train down at Port Melbourne beach at least once a week right across the road from where i work - i regularly go down there and check out their form lol

Do you take your camera with you? The one with the long lens??? Surely there would be some pics worthy of Shirtless AFL or the new page rosy is going to set up.

So how's Richo's form? He looked a little flabby and badly needed a waxing last year.

I ventured to training on Monday and I noticed the following.

Kelvin Moore looks above 190cm tall, redhead, nice broad frame but quite light. looks very mobile and seems to kick the ball quite well, no left foot though...

Pickering looks overweight and uninterested.

Shir is injured. so is Blumfield

Holland and Campbell were doing laps.

Star Performers

Staff looked awesome.. his skills were much better than I expected and he looks much more mobile than last year.

Mcgrath looks like a gazelle out there.

Hyde also looked pretty good

Krakouer looked quickish and his skills are the best the club has got

Can somebody tell me what is wrong with Blumfield ??? It worries me that at this stage he is still on a modified program after xmas - historically players coming off these very limited preseasons struggle for consistency thru the main season and often find themselves injured as they are forced to push their bodies beyond what they are ready for. For Blumfields onfield role, he will need as many miles in the legs as possible.

I know the injured guys still train hard in the gym and pool, but it is still no substitute for being out their chasing a sherrin.

I hope we haven't picked up a new Mark Merenda.

Good to hear McGrath is flying. I have heard from club insiders they have huge hopes for him this year and think he will play seniors at some time.

What about the other guys - Nicholls, Fleming, Shultz?

I bet MrsD will be spewing that big Staff is flying :D :D

I'm having Richo withdrawls, so I might go to training and check out his...."form"....
and if I can tear my eyes away from his...."form"....i'll take a look at how the boys are doing and post a reply.

A mild case of Osteitis Pubis RR. He like Campbell is on a modified program at the moment

I hope Moore is half as good as the two other 190cm redheads Leppish and Whitnall.

I hope Pickering isn't uninterested. it would be such a waste of a draft pick that could have given a young kid the chance to make it.

Keep the training updates comming.

Thanks heaps for the info BuffetsBoy.
Did you notice Rory there? I only caught a glimpse of him on FoxFooty news but he looked to have really filled out in the chest and shoulders.

RR, not training info, but I posted on hawkheadquarters asking for any info on Billy Nicholls and The Hitman posted the following reply.

"A wingman/forward flanker who kicked three goals on debut against Geelong in 2001. Played the Elimination Final of that year, and was unlucky to be dropped for the famous Semi Final win over Port the following week. Hasn't played senior footy since.

Was plagued by hamstring tears in 2002, and was very stiff not to get a senior berth at seasons end, but his fate was probably sealed by then.

A natural footballer that can definately play, but needs more fitness to play his desired wing position, and he had too much opposition to play up forward at Hawthorn.

I'd be surprised if he didn't play senior football at Richmond."

Just watched a replay of Adelaide vs Port Power which both Johnson and Shir played in.

Mathew Shir has got real talent with explosive pace.
He might just be the suprise find of 2003!

Johnson has the ability to break through the lines but apears to be lazy at times.

Here are a couple of other opinions by hawks fans regarding Nicholls

Just so this doesn't degenerate intoone of THOSE discussions....let me say that I personally think Bill has something. He's a natural footballer ( as opposed to an athlete playing footy) , he's extremely hard at the ball AND the man , his tackling techniques and execution put in the top few at the club during his time here and finally , he has true goal sense.

On the negative side , Bill is somwhat injury prone , he doesn't have the greatest fitness regime and his attitude to rehab perhaps leaves a little to be desired. He also failed to improve his skill level dramatically in his time at Hawthorn.

Result , the club bit the bullet and decided to look elswhere , a decision I can wear but like many others I realise it was a border line one and , as I said , one that I hope doesn't come back to bite us.

He showed he had some ability on his debut but things went awry from then on. I'd be surprised if any club picked him up. He is an akward type of player in that you aren't sure where to position him.

In defence - too slow.
In the midfield - no endurance
In attack - maybe as a 3/4 marking option (but he has to be prepared to run with his man the other way)

When he was doing okay for Box Hill at the end of this season, I presume he was playing as one of the key forwards. In the AFL he is never going to have the luxury of having the action come to him. And he doesn't have the leg speed to chase it and make it happen.

If we redraft him, IMO we are wasting our time. I'd rather a untried tall young kid or even Handby/Angwin.

Unfortunately, Mathew is only on our Rookie list so he wont be playing in the seniors unless he is promoted to the senior list.

Though I will admit I am looking forward to seeing him play in the Wizard Cup - Rookies are allowed to play in those games.

I will be heading off to pre-season training during my holidays in February.

I assume that Simon Hart was not retained on the rookie list this year. Does that surprise anybody else?
In the London match, he showed a bit of form when he came on the ground.

By the way, it is no use getting too strung up about the form of our rookies. They are only reserve grade players at this stage and will be unable to play senior football in 2003.

I wonder how the morale is of players that have previously been delisted from an AFL senior list and get redrafted onto a rookie list (eg Pickering and Shir). I am sure they would see it as a step backward - may result in them not busting their guts as much as a player who
had never been on a senior list would. That is why I think rookie lists should only be used for untested talent. They would give 110%.

I Am From Brisbane But Was In Melbourne And Went To Watch Training.
-Rory Hilton Joined In All Drills Out The Ground.Looked Ok Bot Does Not Have The Muscle Definition Of A Lot Off the Other Players.
-One Of The Other Players Being Coughlan.Could Not Believe How Strong And Fit He Looked.Makes Johnson Look Like A Stickman.
-Chris Hyde Had The Best Fot Skills In The General Kicking Drills.
-Stafford Seems to Be A Popular Figure Doing Plenty Of Talking And Seems To Be A Leader.
-Rodan Is Built Like A Tank And Looks To Be Having The Time Of His Life.Has A Rugby League 5/8 Or Lock Build. His Dad Was Also Watching.
-Johnson Did Extra Stretching Before Joining In.Seemed To Always Be Running On The Spot Even If All Other Players Were Standing Still Even Between Drills.
-Richo Did Extra Like 200m Sprints Around The Ground And Looked Fit.
-Tim Fleming Looked Fit Shorter Than Hilton Bot More Solid(They Were Standing Next To Each Other At The Start Talking)
-Pickering Did Look Ordinary
-Fiora Is Still Skinny
-King Is Still Skinny
-Mcgrath Is Still Skinny
-Billy Nichols Is Injured No Running

It sure surprised me. Though Simon Hart - I think is 21-22 maybe they thought he was too old or something. But he certainly looked promising in London and the Coburg games I saw last year. I wonder if he will remain at Coburg for 2003 ???

There doesn't seem to be a great desire at Tigerland to draft sons of former Champions to the Club unlike the approach that say Geelong is taking, where they are hoping to draft a son of a former player every year.

I kinda expected Simon Hart might have been given another crack at it, but I guess he's been around a long time now and if the club are of the opinion he'll never make it, then I gusss there's no use hanging on to him.
I wouldn't use the London game as a guide though, or imo some players would never get a guernsey again. I thought Hart went well in London, but his fate was probably sealed long before that game.

I think there is a good chance the rookies we have might play this season. There are spots on the list up for grabs. I agree I like to see rookie spots used for kids, but we seem to have deliberately gone for experience. I'd like to see the 2 spots we have on the rookie list used to give a promising kid a chance, but I guess the club knows better than me why we only took 3 rookies.

As for the morale, if they are made of the right stuff the guys will realise they have been given another chance to prove themself. Plenty of similar players didn't get taken in the drafts this year.
They should use that to inspire them to train well, stand out on the field and force the clubs hand to promote them to the senior list.

Thanks for the report ttamdav.....
It's really good of you guys to give training reports, the season doesn't seem so far away if we can keep in touch with what's happening with the boys.
Go Tiges.

On the subject of morale. I was speaking to someone from the Club yesterday and he said that the morale throughout the whole club at the moment is as high as it has ever been in a long long time. Everyone has embraced the changes that have taken place and everyone is commited to moving forward together as one.

After our discussion I feel a new era is upon us at Tigerland (sorry about the cliche but I am actually feeling pretty postive too- first time in a long time). ;)

Nicholls injured ???
Fiora still skinny ???

My only want for Xmas this year was a new set of Maxfli Revolution Golf Clubs and that Fiora put on some decent muscle - Appears I got neither :'( :'( :'(

I know Billy has a history of injury, lets just hope he is not a chronic.

As for Johnson and Coughlan, Coughlan has always been a very solid kid, while Johnson more lean. Thats fine, as long as Kane gets it 25 times a match he could be a praying mantis for all I care..

Wasn't surprised about Simon Hart. He unfortunately inherited his mothers gene's, not Royce's.

Could someone please post the pre-season traing schedule on here PLEASE!!!

The next training session is tomorrow 10am at Sandringham.

The training times are posted on the official richmond site (near the bottom of the page) each week tigerdog.
