Problems with inconsistant umpiring! / The Geischen Umpiring Legacy, or lack thereof. [Merged]

Re: The Geischen Umpiring Legacy, or lack thereof.

Too many grey areas in the rules. Blame the AFL for introducing them rather than the umps who have to interpret them.

Lack of consistency is my biggest problem.

Umpires are control freaks by nature and find it difficult to work in teams. They were respected far more by players and the public when there was only one of them per game, but unfortunately the pace of the game and size of the playing area has conspired against this setup.

I don't reckon umpiring has got any worse, but I also don't think the standard has evolved at the same rate as the rest of the game. It's got to be one of the hardest jobs around, so making it a full-time occupation with an appropriate pay rise would be a start - umpiring needs to attract the best people that the game can afford.

Is it any wonder this thread is so prominant?

We have statistically received less free kicks than any other side in the AFL this year.

Someone needs to wear a $20K fine. >:(
