PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

For the majority of this season I have really taken notice of what I would describe as inconsistant umpiring patterns. For the last few years the AFL has stated before the seasons begins that they are going to introduce and inforce new or exsisting rule interpretations. The umpires do enforce these interpretations for say the first 5 or 6 rounds, but then soften on their interpretations as the year stretches on. The problem is, this leaves a very big grey area as to what is a correct decision and what is not a correct decision. The problem I'm having with this situation is that there is no accountablility where the umpires are concerned.

The reason I'm pointing this out is, if we give these umpires too much unaccountability we are allowing them to influence the results in certain games. Interpretations can vary from one game to the next, from quarter to quarter and sometimes even player to player. Nobody ever questions these discrepencies!

In a profeshional multi million dollar industry there should not be varying interpretations in any of these situations. In my business, making the wrong call means I'm misleading my customer, so why is it ok for these umpires to vary their decisions. When you consider the money invested in the industry from all areas including supporters, sponsers and punters etc, I'm amazed that this issue has not been raised at all in the media.

I accept that umpires are human and make mistakes, but this issue has nothing to do with mistakes. This issue relates to blatant varying rule interpretations. Umpires are emotional and sometime egotistical individuals as all humans are. This grey area situation gives them the power to prove a point and influence a game whenver they feel like it. This unaccountable situation also opens the door for corruption if it hasn't already done so. Being in business for a long time has taught me that cheats and thieves thrive in messy situations. If you give cheat or a thief the opertunity, temptation may get the better of them.

There have been some astonishing decisions lately and it's got me wondering!

Thoughts please!
