Geez i hope that one day, someday, we start learning from history.
The way I see it, these are 3 critical forks in the road that have lead to us needing another semi-rebuild when, pulling the right rein in 2, even 1 of these instances things might be different.
1. being offered a motza for Holland by Adelaide. A smart club would have taken the picks and cap relief and done well. Not us, we up BH's pay to way over the odds.
2. Being offered a motza for Gaspar by Freo. A smart club would have taken the picks and cap relief and done well. Not us, we up DG's pay to way over the odds.
3. Stuffing the fruits of the Ottens trade. An interesting one, the theory was right but the execution terrible. This could have been the big one, even a hit rate of 2 or 3 out of the 5 early picks that year would have made a big difference rather than 1 out of 5.
The have been other bad things of course, ones we had no control over like Brown snapping his leg as he was on the verge of becoming the best player in the comp, Polak getting hit by a tram just when he was starting to contribute.
Unfortunately, we'll never get chances like the BH and DG offers again, those were the dying days of early picks being offered for overrated established players. Also, I hope and pray we no longer draft on the basis of one good junior game or a whisper or rumour of a good junior. You may say whats the point of this?, learn the bloody lessons tiges for crissakes. I live in eternal hope and optomism that we have.
