PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

We lack class in the middle, that goes without saying as it appears our full time on-ballers are battlers at best - Foley, Polo, Tuck, Johnson, Coughlan. These 5 a hard at it players but lack the overall footy smarts and finishing skills required to make any impact.

This is why I firmly beleive that we need JBowden, Newman, Brown and Raines to be part of our full time midfield rotation. They will add some class that is severly lacking.

Football is won in the middle. Not only by winning first use but also by how you use it thereafter. We seem to have no problem winning it but we have massive problems using it.

How do we cover these players in their current position? I don't think this is a crucial question, not as crucial as how do we fix our midfield problems?

Bowden. I beleive his brother could cover his sweeping role, maybe not to the extent as Joel, but he can do a reasonable job. Having Joel create and assist in the midfield while PBowden breaking even in defence will improve our side. I agree that JBowdens best position is half back and I would be inclined to leave him there IF we had a good midfield. Considering that we don't then I think JB needs to go in the middle to not only assist but to help the young kids develop.

Brown. Yes he might kick many goals in the forward line, and yes his best position is up forward, but he oozes class and we need him where the action is. Again, if we had a good midfield then I would be inclined to leave him forward. Someone like a Tambling, Krakouer, etc can play that small forward role. Tambling can chase at least and Krakouer tackle.

Newman and Raines. Someone like White, JON, Hartigan, Casserly etc can fill in there while they develop. This will come at the expense of some opposing small forwards kicking bags now and then, but as long as our midfield is improving as a cohesive unit, and our young backs develop and learn, then we are heading in the right direction.

There is no point putting your better players in defence and up forward to try and stop the bleeding and pinching a goal here and there respectively, while you are banging your head against a wall where it counts most, in the middle.

I beleive you need 8-9 genuine on-ballers to rotate through the middle. A midfield rotation of Deledio, Foley, Bowden, Brown, Polo, Raines, Tuck, Newman and Johnson looks half decent.
