Putt: Does he have a future?

Putt does have a future. He is a big boy that is taking a little bit longer to develop.

It said a lot to me when we drafted him that he had been playing off the HFF in the TAC cup. The HFF is hardly the domain of real footballers at the best of time, but for a 200+ cm lad to be playing there says a lot about his approach to the game.

FWIW I don't think it's really accurate to talk about 'demotion' to the rookie list. It's more accurate to describe it as delisting someone and then redrafting them. We only get to keep him if 15 other clubs don't have a spot for him on their senior list. Apparently there were other clubs interested in him when he was drafted, so we might not get him back if we try and 'demote' him (which may not be the end of the world).

Essendon we dead keen on him when we drafted him.Not so sure they would be now that they have Pears and Hooker.

Mitchell Clark is another.

Big noted FF from WA in the 2005 draft.

Sat on the Brisbane list through 2006, 7, 8 then thrown into the ruck.

What a difference.

Putt isn't a certainty, but well worth the gains if prepared to wait.

I'm not sure Dawson & Clark are fair comparisons considering they got AFL games early in their careers. Some on here know I have always rated Clark very highly too, had a lot more strings to his bow than Putt. Also put his stamp on a AFL game very decisively early in his career to show his potential.

Putt's a project player in the true sense of the word. I doubt we would delist him this year. He would want to roll his sleeves up in the next pre-season with a new coach though.

He's one of those players who has the tools physically but needs to develop mentally, he's certainly not alone in that company.

the club said he was a project player when he was drafted, our last project player was dan jackson and he is now 23? (correct if wrong) and has hit his straps. give putt some time, 200cm athletic players dont come around everyday,

and who cares where he was named in the calder cannons? i remember big richo being named at HFF, doesnt mean he really played that position properly!

Definately has a future. Whether or not it involves top level footy or not, well we'll have to wait and see I suppose.

Wouldn't worry too much about Putt at this stage.

Just this year Zac Dawson shows us how a tall boy can turn into a man quite late.

Zac was a FF/FB for the Calder Cannons in 2003.
Hawthorn sat on him for 5 years without him clicking.
Hawks had written him off. StKilda gives him a new opportunity.
Sure enough, at 23yo, he clicks.

As the old rule says, give the talls till 24.

Our focus should be in 3 important areas.

1. Elite junior midfielders.
2. Junior power kpps.
3. Goal-kicking rovers.

Spot on!

The thing with ruckmen, as alluded to by the likes of <gulp> claws, is that ruckmen take a long time to develop so you need 3 or 4 young ones on your list (including as rookie picks and low draft pick choices) and give them time to mature before you can categorically know whether they will make it or not.

To me discarding a Putt now is simply a waste of time. Why draft him in the first place if you were going to give him so little time? Needs to stay on the list - dont mind if thats as a rookie.

According to the McRae report Dean seems to have had his best game for Coburg on the weekend, shut down his opponent and had 21 disposals himself at CHB.

His is a freak athlete - he tested under 3 seconds for 20m and a 14 beep test, very rare to have that kind of speed and stamina at 200cm+. But even in the highlights he looked soft playing in the ruck for Calder. Maybe they see him as a key back simliar to Cameron Wright at the Bulldogs who is 201cm (and not very good)

I saw Putt at Calder a bit and he was never a ruckman, played forward and kicked 30 odd goals in 10 games before being drafted.

Very good athlete, good below his knees and can find the ball but he is as soft as they come. Maybe when he gets bigger he will have more confidence or it could just be the way he will always be. These things do not change overnight.

Keep him but he needs to be playing VFL ones not resdies to begin the grooming proper.

dont think that is quite correct phantom. clarke showed some real glimpses but kept copping injuries. he will play forward when leuenberger and charman overcome injury,
we talk about structure compared to other sides it is non existant,

Some blokes have a huge appetite for the contest. Joel Selwood is the perfect example, he looks like he thrives on the competitive nature of AFL.

Other blokes, and for a variety of reasons struggle with the intensity required to play in the top flight. Sometimes it is just not in their nature. Obviously this will never change.

However other blokes can develop a real hunger. I reckon it does have a lot to do with confidence, and maybe with Putt, if he can recogise that he has the tools to compete at the top level, he might dvelop into a decent AFL player.

He probably has another couple of years before his spot is seriously challenged.

Haven't seen the Burgers play this year - so haven't keep up with Putty's development. But recalling the training session at Gosch's paddock the day Benny first turned out for a praccy match - Putt was noticeble for several reasons:
-he had boundless energy - was up and down the field like a hare - easily the most mobile big on the paddock
-was ok at everthing - not dominant in any particular way
-was very skinny - but seemd to be quite strong
It seemed to me he was a couple of seasons away - but once he picked his specialties and developed his body - he would be a alright. He kinda reminded me of Rance - but without the reckless courage.

Personally I don't think so. He struggles to get a game for Coburg seniors and it would appear that he is being overlooked for the likes of Andrew Browne. If it's possible the club should look at rookieing him next season, otherwise thanks and sorry it didn't work out, son.

Completely different players and different stages of body development. You might also find both playing Coburg 2nds tomorrow.

Also he has been on the list for 2 years FFS.

Definately wouldn't put him on the open market to rookie him. Two years of development wasted - another club would surely get in first - through PSD or a rookie spot.

No point in rookie listing him.

With so many duds leaving there will be many spots available so better to just keep him on the main list.
