Just a very open ended question for someone doing some research (not me)

Who do you consider the most 'dud' team to start a season - ie lose early games
be touted as no hopers etc, that actually either made a grand final or won
a grand final?

Sydney, last year.

Adelaide 97
Carlton 99 spring to mind

Carlton the worst got very lucky in finals

finished 6th cos of different finals system then

r 22 we beat them
week one thumped by Brissy
week two should have played Eagles in Perth but as had to be a final in Melbourne they beat Eagles here as there was already interstate final in Brissy
week three beat Bombers by point

Actually, I think it might have been North Melbourne in either 1975 or 1977.

I recall in one of those years they lost their first 4 or 5 games of the season, and went on to win the premiership.
If anyone has a copy of Every Game Ever Played, I'd be grateful if you could check this out.

baktiger, that bloke in your avatar must be a pie fan, eh?
after their latest GF debacle ...

Last few of weeks he's a Tige's fan :'(
Before that he was a Port fan and a Pie fan. :)

On topic - I said the Swans last year ;D But the person who wants the opinions hopes
for a much larger time frame.

the first one that comes to mind is carlton in 99. as a previous poster said, they got a very lucky draw.

essendon in 93 as well. there was no stand out team in 93. from memory there was only 6 points that separated 1-6 (final 6 that year)

You're on the money Phantom. North lost their first 4 in 1975. Teams to have lost their first 3 and made the GF are North in 1976 and Carlton in 1945. Essendon had 2 losses and a draw (against GF opponent Carlton) in 1993. Both grand finalists have lost their opening game 10 times, last time was 1993.

Scumwood.

They are always a DUD team in my book.

Any Grand Final they have won in the past should not have happened !

...adding they should never win one in the future either !!

Collingwood going from wooden spoon to drawn GF & then runner up in the replay is a massive turnaround. I'm pretty sure at the start of the season they weren't being picked to play off in the GF. It is before my time, well what I can remember anyway, but that is huge. Hafey working wonders again!

Port Adelaide...they thought they were so flamin good...especially when they won by a kick in the prelim against the Saints and choco comes out and sez"we were BY FAR the better team on the night"
Then they beat an injury-ravaged Brisbane......

Swans last year......good game....but......AFL assisted flag by courtsey of Barry Hall gettin off scott free.......

Agree with Phantom about North Melbourne flags of 75 and 77.....
They BOUGHT THE BLOODY THINGS PRACTICALLY....courtesy of the VFLs 10 year rule when a player could go wherever they wanted to after 10 years....you see.....North Melbourne were the only team in the comp not to have won a flag at that stage in the games history.....I reckon Barrassi was over-rated as a coach.......at least every Tiger flag was won on Tiger culture,Tiger passion,Tiger toughness,Tiger talent.......
AND CAAARLTONS FLAG IN 1972......AND 82..........
Richmond were by far the better side........In 72 they fogot to play like it....

In 82,I recall it being a bit wet and the Tigers went in tall.......

Adelaide were interesting...never forget Jarmans last quarter...truly inspiring stuff...
Funny thing about Blighty.....which sums him up.....his career........
he tried 4 times as coach of the pussy cats to get a flag.....got flogged each time except for 1989 where we did witness the greatness of Ablett and the courage of Dermie Brereton who had the bejeezuz knocked outta him...still kicked a bag and was one of the hawks best....and Dipper played with a punctured lung...true!
tHEN BLIGHTY DECIDES HES HAD ENUFF OF THE CATS......MOVES TO ADELAIDE THEN....bANG bANG......NOT ONLY 1,BUT 2 flags....back to back....and from the team that had good ordinary pre-seasons!Bugger me to this day!
Funny game footy...... ;D

Still saying Carlton 99 worst ever

the finals system then was

1v8
2v7
3v6 BNE v Carl
4 v5 WB v wce

worse two losing teams were eliminated

Eagles Beat Bulldogs at G, Blues lose at Gabba

following week
Lions V Dogs
Eagles V Blues

as Lions were ranked higher than Eagles, Eagles had to come back for second week and got beaten by a very lucky Blue side who then beat the Bombers by a point (in a way that was funny beating the cocky Blues but in a way I hated it as it was the Blues). Then lost to the Kangas in a very boring GF.

Blues not only cheated in the 1990's but had the best luck ever with finals appearances, I hope the rot on the bottam for another 5 years.

The Crow's in 97 were very lucky to go all the way from their position at the end of the home & away season. But in saying that, you have to take your hat off to them for pulling off an incredible finals campaign.

Surely you mean 50 ?

Fitzroy were bottom in 1916 with 2 wins from 12 games and won the premiership. Only 4 teams played cause of the war so they were 'in the four'. They beat Carlton twice in the finals who had finished top with 10 wins :hihi

The following year they did the same thing with 6 teams competing after winning just 6 games from 15 but lost the GF.

Never thought at any stage the Swans could win last year - Carlton in 1999 was an absolute travesty shouldn't have made the finals but still the Bombers only have themselves to blame.
