Solution to the flooding and stop start football??? Want to see the forwards come back into the game? Try this radical idea.........take the wingmen and pop them on the bench.

Has been done before in the old VFA comp.

May just result in slowing the game down without stopping the flooding as players would be more tired and would possibly move the ball forward more slowly; certainly the bench would be used more often.

Doubt that any such major changes will be made unless crowds and/or TV ratings diminish.

Would be happy enough to see ball kick backwards in the back 50 or back into the back 50 as play on - doubt much else can be done without a domino effect on the game elsewhere!

Cut the bench back to 2 that'll stop flooding and all the other *smile* and footy will return to the contested game it once was with man on man, contests, marks, collisions and long kicks ahhh call me ol fashioned.

an then u probably want em played as 19th and 20th (if u really are that old? :hihi).  You can never take the game back to that Craigy - use your scone mate - I went to games back then and give today's game even with the inherent blights (not the malcolm kind ;)), it's so much better and more skillful!

Yep i know Pharace.... just takes me back to happier times!!

The game will never return to that you are correct.

I think that's a common sense rule but it's going to place far more pressure on defenders.

I've muted this idea before but I'd also like to see a ball up at the top of the goal square for a rushed behind.

Worth considering but won't happen.

Hang Vlad up by the you-know-whats and give him a good tar and feathering. It wont help flooding either but make me a mighty happy chappy :)

The speed and accuracy in kicking of the modern game has changed it forever. 32 players is enough to have on the ground now. 36 makes it too easy to close up. imagine the forwards coming back into the game with uncluttered midfields.... :clap

What about interpreting marking infringements as written in the rulebook and letting the good forwards kick 100 goals a season again. Then it would be worth kicking to contests and teams wouldn't have to play keepings off as much.

Put a limit on how many interchanges you can have per quarter!

There's definate merit in that idea.

Absolutely spot on.  Reduce the amount of rotations through the midfield and ipso facto you have a slower game.....that's if we really want a slower game though ;)

i have a radical idea... make no rule changes for once. i watched half of the 2003 grand final on fox the other day and i couldn't believe how much slower the game was only 3 years ago compared to now. people think footy was better back when there was more contested footy. i disagree.

Then we would be left with no players ;)

Limiting the number of interchanges wouldn't necessarily slow the game down. But as players become tired they become more desperate, resulting in more contested posessions and more direct play.A win-win situation imo!
