Skill wise and agility I reckon balta is every bit as good as rance at same age . What separated rance from the pack is that he played with the heart of a lion . Daring beyond daring , he made the play from the impossible. If balta plays with half that tenacity, he’ll be a player coz no one plays like rancey

Rance's ability to read the play and the ball coming in and his own ability to make the spoil is what made him unique , He could read the ball of the boot of the opposition player knowing where it was going then made the distance in time to spoil , He also never tangled with the foward trusting his own judgement to mark or spoil

But anyone taller then him would put him away.
He was the Best as the 3rd man.
One on One is very average.
His closing speed to make a spoil was outstanding.
The Best one on one defender we have is Grimes.
All he had to do is hang around one more year and we would've been a shoe in.

Nonsense
Some idiot on twitter said that Rance had never stood the best forwards so a tiger supporter posted pictures of him playing on Franklin, lynch, Daniher, Kennedy and Cameron. It’s a myth that he didn’t play on them and a myth that he was poor at it.
The reality is that Richmond doesn’t play a strictly man on man defence, they move from opponent to opponent. Rance has played key back, half back and 3rd man up.
Every one of our defenders gets beaten one on one at times, as do the best defenders from other teams. Rance was a good one on one defender, especially after Leppitsch helped him out, but it was the whole package that may him great.

I think its one of the biggest misconceptions in footy.

That a footballer dominates at the level below.

I watch an absolute shitload of footy at all levels, and have come to learn that the performance across levels should not be extrapolated in a linear fashion.

I think most recruiters know this.

This is especially so at AFL level, where dropped players are virtually always working on certain aspects of their game when not playing at AFL. The instruction is to play a certain way often to the detriment of their overall performance.

That idiot would be Ricky Nixon.

Couldn’t agree more. The idiot from Melbourne took 2 marks on him once ( which were impressive pack marks ) and all of a sudden he’s suspect 1 on 1. There are some monster key forwards out there like Dixon and Cox. It’s pure physics that someone 199cm and 110kg has a distinct advantage physically but I detest the word suspect when describing Ranceys man on man work. It’s simply not his advantage when playing on monsters. And yet on the whole he destroyed opposition. Humiliating them on most occasions.

There was a stat going around about the best one on one player over a 2-3 year period.
Rance dominated. Think he won twice as many ones on ones compared to second place McGoven.

His best crapped over anyone.

Spot on. It appears even some Tigers here on PRE don't understand the way our backline plays. It's not a man on man game anymore but all about getting players to positions where the ball is most likely to land and being confident in winning the contest from there. We play the percentages. It requires our players to not be selfish but to buy in to the game plan.

Maybe you might want to ask how bad Rance is to Buddy or Cameron , Kennedy will also tell you how hard Rance is to beat.

Rance being not good 1 on 1 is Rubbish

Simple fact is the RFC doesnt need another Rance, we need a competent competitive reliable big bodied tall key defender.

Defenders like Rance are generational players and cannot be replicated.

He can be replaced.
Have a look how good Grimes was in his absence.
We play a team defence, you would look good down back alongside BigV, Broad, Astbury, Edwards, Stack and Grimes
Incredible back 6.
All thanks to leppa

NOT a rumour but a fact,
Footscray and Essendon are very very keen on him to join them next year.
