Reiwoldt played as a key forward all year. Key forwards take far more contested marks than back up ruckmen for obvious reasons. Robert Campbell took a grand total of 11 contested marks all year for the premiers, is in his prime and played most of every game. Mark Blake played 25 games for the best team in the comp and took a grand total of 5.

Fact remains Patto is an extremely poor contested mark.

Do you think he's ever going to have what it takes to make a key forward Duck?

Yeah, agree. He doesn't have the creativity, skill or marking ability to make an impact there.

It's ruck or bust for leysy.

To be a decent CHF you either need to be able to take pack marks (Patto can't) or have speed to be a lead-up player (Patto doesn't). He does have good stamina so may get away from some defenders but without pack marking ability or speed, stamina is doesn't count for much.

Agree. Patto is a back up ruckman. At best.
yep agree hes backing up all of simmonds vickery putt graham at coburg.why cant the club make the hard decisions on players. what are the odds of deluca or cartledge in the psd sheesh hed be even futher back.
anyway theres a pattison board so lets talk about the dud there eh people..

Been saying since 2004 that the ruck is his only position at AFL level. Odd pinch hit at CHF but otherwise the ruck. And only an off the bench ruck at that.should have put him up for trade in 2007. As usual, its too late now. Currency has been diminished.

If he dominates the first 3 or 4 rounds of VFL playing first ruck then yeah, 15 would be great. Until he does that though I don't see the point in calling him up. I also don't really see the point in predictions when at best we've got scant evidence of how good he is. Even if you've seen every junior game he's played they're all largely irrelevant compared to what he does against men early next year.

Thing he has going for him is he's already very well built for his age. But I agree what is the point in sending him to the wolves if he doesn't excel in his first few VFL games. And I doubt he will ealy, just needs to find his feet first. Might see him in pre-season comp if he's doing well on the track otherwise we'd probably see him in a few games later on in the season.

For sure. Except in obvious cases I think the most valid development policy would be to play all new recruits in the VFL reserves until they prove they are too good for that level. Move them up after 3 or 4 dominant performances and apply the same theory to calling them up to the AFL. This approach works very well in other sports so I don't see why you wouldn't do it in the AFL. The principles seem universal to me.

If we need Vickery to play in 2009 it is a sure sign of pure list mismanagement.

I do find it funny that some blame Patto's plight on being thrown to the wolves too early while others expect Vickery to play a role in 2009. Really, how many ruckman play as a 18 year old? L'Berg, Kreuzer are doing it now and Ottens & Fraser did it in the past. Some say it even limited the long term success of both Ottens and Fraser.

Leuenberger was probably the highest touted ruck prospect in memory and he's only played 19 games in his first two years, including not playing at all until round 14 in his first year.

oh dear oh dear another promising thread goes to the dogs because of those who cant see past their nose, every yr the same things happen and every yr the same people defend the same things and in doing so fail to grasp the big picture . i feel sorry for them.one day the penny will drop but it will have to be someone else who helps them see the error of their ways i personally couldnt give a stuff anymore.

That's funny santa. Hopefully the penny might drop for you too one day and you might enjoy a game of footy for what it is. Feel free to not give a stuff about showing us the errors of our ways. We'll manage...I hope. :hihi

And that is the perfect way to handle him. I will be shocked if he doesn't take a massive step up in 2009.
