The kicking of two of our recruits - Post & Thompson concerns leysy.

Leysy's sure he heard Francis say we were only going to recruit guys with good kicking skills.

That works in theory only unfortunately.

On the flip side no point picking up players with great footskills like Schulz who cant get the ball. If you are going to go this philosophy ad nauseum then you aint gonna win a premiership becasue you're not going to get quality players. Disposal skills are obviously very important and the Tigers have picked up an inordinate number of skill-less players in the past but percentage-wise the skill levels are increasing. Don't pass up a guy like Post just because his foot skills aren't squeaky clean. More contested marks than any other player in the competition is not a stat to just ignore.

There are now 40 players on the list. Looking at their original drafts, we have:

2003: Jackson, Raines, Foley (3)
2004: Deledio, Tambling, Thomson, Polo, Pattison, McGuane, Morton, Thursfield (eight)
2005: JON, Hughes, White, Graham (4)
2006: Reivoldt, Hislop, Edwards, Connors, Collins (5)
2007: Cotchin, Rance, Putt (3)
2008: Vickery, Post (2). So far.

That's 25 out of 40. with 6 places to fill, it is very likely that at least 5 of these players will be under 23 and originally from one of those last six drafts. They will be either recycled from a recent draft or brand spanking new to AFL.

So we will end up with a list of 46 with around 30 players (maybe even 31) who will be 23 or under at the start of 09.

That looks like a young, refreshed list to me.

What's the fuss about?

Post is 3.02 for 20m, pretty quick for a bloke 194cm and 88kg and has good endurance. We liked him better than McKernan who is apparently too short to play ruck, a long but inconsistent kick and very dependent on his marking to get the ball.

Post also compares favourably to McKernan in that he averaged 19 disposals & 8 marks a game in the U18 Champs compared to McKernan 9 disposals & 5 marks.

Interestingly the PRE lovechild from our picks TV averaged 10 disposals and 4 marks a game in the U18C.

Promising information and heaven forbid if we picked McKernan and he ended up like his brother!

time will tell i guess.

i don`t know a hell of a lot about the players we got but i read the article on vickery in the hun the other week and he sounds likje a good pick up.
we desperately needed big strong blokes so at least we`ve started picking them up.

we are miles away from being contenders, yet pick only 3 players, 2 untried.

lol - Richmond.

Hawthorn still picked more untried talent than us.

This is FJ's what, 4th draft ?

I hear ya harry, bottom line is had we used pic 70 as our 4th pic we would not participate in the PSD and we'd almost be happy with utilizing 4 pics, end of the day as FJ said we will pic up a kid in the PSD, perhaps cockie as a small tough mid/fwd...that would take our pics overall in the ND and PSD to 4 with thompson being the 5th (pic 42)....

We need to then pic at least 4 or 5 rookies, we already have sylvester so that should take it to 6...

I rated it average.
Happy with Vickery and Hislop. Would like to have gotten Davenport or Cockie with 70 though.
Just a bit worried we are gonna take the smoker with PSD.

Personally, I am more than happy with our picks.

Welcome to Tigerland boys!!!!!

Just don't let all the self-important blowhards on this forum, none of whom have an ounce of ability, or courage to go on the record to state who they'd take instead of you, stand in your way towards being part of he next Richmond premiership team.

Stick it up-em Tyrone, Jaydyn, Adam and Tom.

2008 3 nd picks. 2007 3 nd picks 2005 3 nd picks. its just my opinion but we are yet to embrace the nd as a means to build a list.we are yet to embrace a truly youth policy at richmond.

im not sure how many times ive said this, when the whole draft is over thats when u say ok 3 kids in the ND, 1 in the PSD and say 1 traded for = X amount

In 2005 3 ND pics plus white in the PSD = 4 young kids, had it been 3 kids in the ND and say a kingsley in the PSD, then my word an absolute waste..

2006, JR, edwards, connors, collins, petersen and polak ( 6 players) 5 youngsters and polak was 22

2007, cotchin, rance, putt, gourdis all young players picked in the ND and PSD, morton who at 20 yrs old i classify as young...only mcmahon at 24 for pic 19 was wrong!

2008 - Vickery, Post and Hislop (hislop only 20 and we know he can play)....PSD another young pic taking it to 4 young draftees.....+ thompson 22 yrs old

Now if i am to agree somewhat with you claw is that this draft is seen to be one of the best along with 2001....there should've been min 1 or 2 more delistings...Most agree that RFC should have had 5 pics in the ND and perhaps 1 in the PSD taking it to 6 + thompson = 7 players
Worst case should've been at least 4 in the ND and 1 in the PSD + thompson = 6

In the rookie draft, theres sylvester we know, + i think they are going to rookie gourdis, and i hear fort caruso, thats 3, now we must pic another 2 or 3 to add to that list....

I am quite happy that we got vickery and post as we have been crying out for rucks and talls to go along with rance and putt from last year...
Hislop at 20 yrs old and pic 20 in the 2006 draft is a hard nosed midfielder, the type u like claw....
I do think we need a small crumbing fwd and cockie could well be that player, hard at it and has the body size to play straight away....Hope we pic him up in the PSD

DOB: 18th April 1989
Debut: 2008
From: Sorrento-Duncraig
Height: 182 cm
Weight: 85 kg

Cockie in action:

Should have taken Cockie with 70 and given someone the arse so we could get Ben 'smoking Jo' Cousins in the psd.

Ill also add, had we picked McKernan there would've been many detractors, had we picked Trengrove well some would be happy, but then again some would question why he slipped from a possible top 10 to early 20's...same as rance last year some were questioning why he slipped to 18 (our priority pic)...Ahh seems no ones ever happy, also a curve ball to throw....

All the best boys!!!

welcome to punt road

Seems to work OK for Chris Pelchen who is on record many times as saying he will only draft players with A grade kicking skills. He is non-negotiable on this when drafting players.

This is a furphy. Considering at draft camps they dont even test for these skills, how do you really know whether a 17 yo is going to have a grade kicking skills? I remember Richo as a 17/18 yo in the U19s, kicked as straight as a die the whole season, look what turned out. I tell you what, there'd be a hell of alot of champions who wouldnt have even played an AFL game if you folowed this rule to the letter. Where did this myth that Hawthorn only have elite skilled players come from anyway?

As I said the theory is great, the reality is totally different.
