Rd 1 team vs Geelong (Live on ABC TV)

Yep they've been good from what I've seen. Jack's just kicked his 6th.

Big difference between VFL and AFL but we'll never know how good they are unless Wallace let's them loose.

True but there are some good footballers in the Geelong VFL side Rooke Prismall Davenport Tenace Varcoe Lonergan & Big Simpson was their 1st pick in the draft so really good win all Tigers played well. I thought in this order White Morton Tivendale Riewoldt McGuane Collins Connors Edwards JON & rookie Cartledge. The VFL players I like the look of Fort Caruso Carnell Shelton Morris.

Still can add Coughlan Cotchin & Casserley to the mix in the next few weeks plus Rance & Putt the depth is looking better.

White was a cut above today, did the work with clearances and running the ball through the midfield, great stuff, followed up from a good game up forward last week.
Edwards was quiet, Cartledge did well, importantly he was tapping to our advantage time after time.

Morton showed he is clearly a forward after his average display in the backline last week.
The best thing was the run through the middle, the tackling and all round pressure on the ball carrier, hope this is reflected in the Tigers performance tomorrow.

Very pleased today with Connors, Morton, White, Edwards, Riewoldt & Collins.

My only concern with Morton is that he has very similar attributes to Pettifer - not overly quick but can kick a big goal; good overhead for his height but not hugely aggressive. The question I suppose is can you have both of these types on the forward line?

Collins looks like a find - can find the ball and when he tackles, they stick. Will debut this year.

White backed himself and ran through the lines - he needs to take these chances/risks when he gets his callup.

Connors and Edwards will play seniors before Round 4 & 5 - depends on how the seniors perform of course - but these boys are not that far away. When they both come in the team you get the feeling that they won't be dropped again. The guard will really start to change IMO.

JON actually looked OK as the game went on - I think he will make it. He is a project player; unfortunately we picked him at 8 and let's face it, that is the main issue that most of us have as Connors;Edwards even Colllins are way ahead of him.

White and Tivendale should be a monty for next week, they were simply a class above. Morton will be the next to follow.
Riewoldt and the others should be given more time in the magoos to prove their form in harder times. Its easy to look good when the team is on top.

White was explosive today should be playing seniors soon. Collins has a similar style to connors.

Reguarding JON he looked better in his decision making than in the past but he needs to get more of the ball and run harder. Having said that I'd prefer to be a forward than a backman for Coburg today

Collins looks pretty tall how tall is he looks high 180cm range?
somewhere around 186cm he's an ugly bugger but can play

Must have been looking at a different game today. JON's decision making was better??? You have to be kidding.

Still thinks he's a Robert Harvey and can just twist his hips and get out of trouble. Problem is he tells his opponents what he's about to do also.

Has as much peripheral vision as Kozzie from the Saints'. Zero, NULL. 0 Nada Zip etc etc

I saw approx 50% of the game today. My observations:

White showed quite a bit today, would like him at Coburg to be given a consistent go in the midfield at Coburg for a while longer a la Foley in 05 & 06. This way he could learn to deal with attention on a constant basis. Maybe could concentrate on just slowing his last 2 steps before kicking to get maximum accuracy.
Riewoldt- Good team orientated play, contest well. Feel that he is possibly an inch or two short to offest his lack of pace. Should continue to learn at Coburg.
Tivendale- Played as he should being a 150+ game player when a VFL team is destroying the opposition. Good solid game.
Connors- He has everyting we want in a young player, except one thing - endurance. This may sound a bit far fetched, I would almost pull him out of the game for a while & just send him on a hardcore fitness regime. He knows how to win the ball, what to do with it & how to read the play, he just seems to be constantly stuffed. A real gem this kid, if he gets the fitness side of things right, he'll be a star.
McGuane- Didn't have alot to do, was ok, not flash. Saw a wonky rushed kick, but didn't see much else. Won't worry about that as I did not see enough to make a fair judgement.
Collins- Looks a footballer albeit a raw one. He shows he has some handy tools to work with. Well skilled, good disposal. Just needs a body to go with the tools.
Morton- Can't bag a forward who has just kicked 7 in conditions that were average at best. I think he may end up being a player who has his days, but I'm still not convinced he will be a long term asset. I wait to see more.
JON- Sometimes better not to say anything at all. Some picks work, some don't, oh well. Just a shame it ws a first rounder - not his fault he went at 8. I will say I don't think anyone would question his endeavour, keep having a crack & hopefully it will just click one day & al us experts can have egg on our face.
I didn't see enough of Silvester to comment. Cartledge seemed to hold his own from what I saw in the ruck. Appeared to have a solid grab but his disposal & options weren't the best.
I did only see about half the game so I may be not be the best person to give appraisals, but their you have my 2 cents worth!

Tivvers ended up with 35 touches (25 in the first half) and 4 goals. Clearly above this level and should see him back in the Richmond side next week.
Morts was great with 7 goals, seems to play a bit deeper than Petts so I think it could work with Petts across a half forward and Morts in the goal square.
Whitey was fantastic with 29 touches and delivery into the forward line was excellant. Probably needs to string a couple of these sorts of games together.
Shelton the new captain was a certainly a leader today with 29 touches, Connors 23, Collins 21, whilst JON was his usual self, not knowing where the hell he was going at any stage in the game.

Morton has more class than Petts, he could probably play the role Lids has been playing which should free Lids up to play more in the midfield.

Hi Guys,

I made it along to the game today and have similar views to others. Here is my take for those unable to see the game:

White - This bloke played a ripper game today, he chases, tackles, runs hard and fast and runs all day. He was often breaking the lines and getting space and had a number of entries into forward 50 and good tough work around the clearances aswell. His foot injury is clearly behind him and it's starting to pay dividends. He looks really fit and I was very impressed on what i saw today. The only weakness is sometimes his skills let him down. He should have probably kicked 3-4 goals today IMO as he missed a few gettable shots.

Morton - Classy and skilful, not overly quick or tall and is very similar to a Pettifer type player. The beauty of this bloke is when he gets the ball anywhere near the goals you can be assured he'll kick the goal or go very close. Very good skills and a natural forward but will be completing for spots with others in the forward line.

Riewoldt - Has put on some weight this year and looks even more confident. This kid is a real leader and team player and is developing well. Was involved in many goals and kicked straight when he had set shots. Flew for everything. Not overly quick though. He went down back at one stage and contested well and punched from behind. I think this kid has potential to play anywhere on the ground even possibly in the midfield or as a tall backman. So this guy will be a regular soon it's just a matter of finding him a spot in the team balance wise.

Edwards - I thought he was quiet today, but this guy has great evasiveness and the ability to blind turn, baulk and weave which appeals and he tackles and does a lot of one percenters. Does look stronger this year too so has built up but didn't have a great day. Needs to find more of the ball before getting a game in the one's I think but does have skill and plays a team game

Tivendale - Yeah he had plenty of the ball and played well but to be honest I think it's a good sign if this bloke is playing 2's. Keep playing the kids ahead of him in my opinion as he's not going to help you win a Grand Final.

JON - I can see why Miller thought this bloke was going to be somethign special but unfortunately it just hasn't worked out. He constantly turns the ball over, started on the bench and spent quite a bit of time on the pine in the first half. Rawlings obvsiouly doesn't have much faith in him. His skills are just too poor at the moment and often gets caught/tackled too and doesn't get much of the ball either.

Collins - Really impressed me Collins he is quite a tallish midfielder which is unique for Richmond. Still very young and needs to put on more bulk but he certainly wasn't pushed off the ball or anything. Prepared to chase and tackle also and although his decision making wasn't great a few times (kicking inside 50 to a stationary small foward) but he does have poise and skill and definitely like to see him debut at some stage this year.

Connors - This bloke oozes class and poise. His left foot is superb and lhe inked up well all day. Doesn't seem fit though so i'd expect to see him pushing for a game in 3-4 weeks time.

Coburgers - Geez i love some of these small blokes at Coburg. Fortunato is a llittle ripper and they all go in hard and play for each other. Hopefully this will rub off on the listed players.

In summary a great effort by the boys and the listed players look to be improving and coming along well. The only negative for my mind is the lack of tall defenders in the two's who could push for a spot in the seniors. Now we have Cotchin this year our recruiting team should be out there scouring the planet for a tall CHB/FB. I don't understand why Collingwood can find Nathan Brown and Geelong Harry Taylor and we are unable to find a solution for our backline. We need to fix this problem by focusing our recruiting on a tall backmen because we clearly have a lot of talented small/medium height players at Coburg and Richmond but not many tall developing kids.

Hope you enjoyed the post boys as I've read many of yours before and thought it was time I paid my dues.

I saw the game on tv today and I was impressed by what I saw and a little dissapointed in JON I don't know whay we still have him on the list if he doesn't improve this year I suspect that he will be gone. Now onto the positives. Morton, Riewoldt, Tiv and White. All had awesome games and I think will be pressing for selection. It is a great thing to have not knowing how to fit all the players in. The Richmond-Coburg alliance has been great and I hope to get to games this year. Cartlidge was good in the ruck today and show why we picked him up in tfhe rookie draft. Morton and Riewodlt played well together and could be in the side next week. I love Fortunato Caruso. He will get better and better this year. His work frate is fantastic and hoefully if he continues this way can get picked up next year on the list or as a rookie. I also thought Morris was good especially his last quarter.

White - BOG - should get a game next week. Would definately play him ahead of Raines.
Morton - a class above - should get a game next week.
With Johnson coming back next week which need 3 to come out.
Jack was good and may replace Hughes if he has a shocker tomorrow
Edwards was poor
Connors was ok - class above when gets the ball but was blowing very very hard. Would put him on an extreme fitness regime. If this kid could get as fit as a White or a Howat he would be a genuine gun of the AFL.
Collins showed glimpses of composure and genuine ability. Still raw though.
McGuane - didn't do much.
Silvester - didn't do much
Cartledge - Good but had no real opposition.
Tivendale - Put his hand up for a spot next week. Hopefully doesn't get one.
JON - massive worry.

Coburg players -
Fort Caruso - Fine little player. Front and square all the time, great little terrier with great skills. Should have got a rookie spot instead of Howat. Still young enough.
Shelton and Carnell - Both very solid inside mids - set us up time and time again. RFC should seriously look at these 2.
Liddle - very good game
Morris - solid down back
Horne - solid game.
Coburg have many solid small players that are hard at it and reliable.

Where was Gazzo? Injured? It would be a massive injustice if he were fit and missed out to someone like JON who would struggle in the Coburg seconds.
