Take a look at

Looks like bye bye AFL scores!

Interesting.

Would like to have a look at this site while a game is on to see how much lag there is between updates and real time.

Stats appear to be independently recorded as they differ slightly from the official AFL stats, e.g. Bowden 19K 12H/18K 13H, Montagna 20K 16H/21K 14H etc.

Working for Champion Data, I can say that capturing stats requires very, *very* skilled staff. We have quite a few people (won't say exactly how many) working on each game. The key people working each game have been doing this for years and are seriously good. I reckon I'm not half bad but I'm humbled by just how good our crews are. All this costs money, and we spend it to make sure the numbers are as good as they can be. How they're then distributed is another issue. So I have to ask, is Prowess spending as much as we are on people for each and every game? Do they go interstate or get the numbers from TV footage? If so, then the numbers will definitely not be accurate as you really need people (more than one) at the ground for each and every single game.

What I do have to say though is that Prowess is doing a great job making their version of the stats more visible as you see what we do mainly through the Match Day flash app on the AFL web site where we supply the data and in the print media. However, the AFL has given Telstra the rights for this sort of data in real time, so I'm not sure just how legal their efforts are. It'd be interesting to know ::)

Something tells me these are rhetorical questions.  :P

Fudge, I heard Rex Hunt on 3AW a couple of years ago answering a caller's question and describing how Graeme Bond takes the stats by himself with x different coloured pens etc. I found it hard to believe that one person couple keep track of all this by himself as well as answer Rex and co's questions, e.g. "How many kicks this quarter for Harvey, Bondy?"

Was Rex having a lend of us?

Lee2...

It really isn't easy to keep up with what happens on the field. There is no way one person can do it accurately. I watch our team sometimes and they're all in the zone doing what they do best. If they ever play FPS games, I never want to be playing against them.

I chuckle when I hear the ABC commentators ask the stat man for his numbers. They're close, but not right. Even then, things missed would be stuff like spoils, shepards, knock ons, and the detail of the stat as kick, can be long, short, backwards, along the ground... you get the idea. Simply put, the more people, good people, you have, the better the accuracy and the greater the detail.
