I look forward to once again seeing a Tiger team comprised of brawny, hairy, unsociable men of dyspeptic disposition that will laugh at the more virtuous as weak and vain; be untroubled by what the media, the public – liberal and conservative alike – and the opposition think of them; and be ready at any time to ‘bird’ the world when necessary. Serious footballers that when nothing else works – will scrape together a win or two on pure grit, determination and the ability to inspire others.
Think of all the great teams of recent times and their make up: Brisbane, Essendon, Geelong – their lists of hard men, the uncompromising ones that wouldn’t accept defeat even when confronted with opponents of greater skill or physical ability. Have we got that type of individual now? Will Lids, Bling, Reiwoldt, Axel, Rance, Polo, Cotchin, Moore, McGuane, Vickery, Connors, Jackson, White and JON, Nahas – youths on the cusp of manhood for the most part - mature to be men of this ilk?
I have a feeling maybe some of them will. I think we have seen enough in small doses to suggest we have some good stock there.
