On the back of such a poor game, I thought it would be the opportune time to reflect on what has gone wrong since Terry Wallace graced Tigerland with his presence.
2004/05 - Year 1:
Brad Ottens requests a trade, wants to play for a premiership contender. The Tigers trade Ottens in a three-way deal with Geelong and Melbourne, and receive draft selections 12 and 16. Melbourne received Moloney.
Mistake: Losing such a talented player whilst receiving so little in return, passing on Brent Moloney and taking a draft pick instead, drafting Danny Meyer with pick 12 ahead of the likes of Prismall, Monfries and Knights.
Mistake: Using pick 4 in the draft on Richard Tambling, ahead of Lance Franklin and Jordan Lewis.
Mistake: 2004 NAB AFL Draft, late selections, Richmond drafts Dean Limbach and Mark Graham with picks 52 and 60 respectively. Passing on a chance to draft future All-Australian CHB Matthew Egan.
Mistake: De-Listing Tim Fleming an up and coming player who had good first and second years, yet keeping Shane Morrison for one more year of minimal service.
2005/06 - Year 2:
Mistake: 2005 NAB AFL Draft, first round draft pick, No.8 Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls. Picked ahead of Shaun Higgins, Nathan Jones, Varcoe and Birchall.
Mistake: Forcing Andy Kellaway into retirement whilst maintaining the deer in the headlights, Darren Gaspar.
2006/07 - Year 3:
Mistake: Recruiting Kent Kingsley through the pre-season draft. Say no more.
Mistake: De-Listing David Rodan and maintaining Ray Hall and Trent Knobel.
Mistake: 2006 NAB AFL Draft, selecting Shane Edwards with pick 26. Picked ahead of Bachar Houli, Alwyn Davey, Kurt Tippett and Lindsay Thomas. Selecting Carl Peterson (Who Never Played A Game For Richmond) with pick 60. Picked one selection ahead of Josh Hill. Selecting Andrew Collins with pick 73. Picked ahead of Aaron Edwards.
2007/08 - Year 4:
Potential Mistake: Trading pick 19 in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft in exchange for Jordan McMahon, missing out on Scott Selwood.
As you can see this is a fair reign of terror in such a short space of time, and reminiscing on these errors only brings a supporter to contemplate what could have been if recruiters had made the right decisions. You only have to look at the crop of players Geelong have drafted from 2004 - 2007 and compare to our players to realise how many mistakes have been made. That is considering that each year we have had higher draft picks than Geelong.
I rest my case.
