I think the lines have become blurred between 'recyclyed' and 'recycled hacks'...

Yeah I think the thread title is a bit misleading. The implication is that if a club lets a player go, that player is deficient in some way. It's not too much of a jump to "hack" from there.

Dud = a player who isn't up to AFL level (below average) and delisted.

Hack = a player who is no more than 'average' to AFL level and is usually traded.

Cuz a hack ??

When's the last time a Brownlow Medallist and Premiership captain become a 'hack'?
There are lots of Brownlow medallists and premiership captains who are not playing now presumably because at there stage of life they are hacks. At 31 I doubt that Cousins is even an average midfielder now.

Picking him means in 2011 we won't have a 20 yo on the list who with three years of development in him. The same problem that all our recycled players have caused. Then we only get 2 years out of the recycled and have to take another recycled because the 20yo is not there. Its insane.

10 yr ladder and number of recycled players on list updated with numbers kindly supplied by L2R2R. Thanks as always my mind boggles at your data base.

Club Recycled Players
Bris Lions 3 ***
Port Adel 6 ******
Geelong 3 ***
Essendon 4 ****
Sydney 7 *******
Adelaide 6 ******
North Melb 4 ****
West Coast 3 ***
Hawthorn 6 ******

Looks like a trend to me.

I think the recycled players left on the list are good players. Richmond in the past has had some fantastic players come from other clubs that were great servants. But I think most were in trades.

The past was completely different and almost not relevant. You didn't have to sacrifice draft picks to pick up recycled players. There was no opportunity cost.
