Responsibility of posting on PRE (and Hitwise top 25 AFL site stats)

There's no doubt there's been some very ordinary, abusive, insulting and crude  posting on PRE over the last few days.

It's made me wonder what our much idolised Jack Dyer would think of us eating our own that way.  Energy that would be better spent getting stuck into the opposition has, in my opinion, been wasted abusing our own Tiger family.

I was sent graphs recently from a uni assignment someone did comparing footy  forums.  PRE is by far the biggest Richmond one and right up the top of other club sites too.   BigFooty Richmond board is the second biggest Richmond forum but PRE has at least 3-4 times more usage.

PRE is regularly in the top 25 AFL related websites. In August we were still 23rd which is pretty awesome considering we didn't have politics or finals to create a lot of discussion.  (Will post the top 25 sites at the end for anyone interested)

RFC have told me they consider PRE a great asset for keeping in touch with supporters thoughts.  Journos have contacted me on numerous occasions for comments or info.

There has to be a reason this site is so popular and widely read.  I've got no doubt it's largely due to the awesome posters on here.  There is a power of info on the club's history, the kids in the drafts, the extensive training reports, the latest club news etc.

I admit I feel a real sense of responsibility when PRE has such enormous usage to make sure that the site reflects well on the RFC and it's supporters.  Not as a plant of theirs to ensure anyone who doesn't toe the party line is eliminated as has been suggested, but to try and make sure information posted is accurate and not damaging.

Anyway this is just my very verbose way of saying that a lot of people read PRE and in light of recent postings maybe we all need to have a think about our posting habits.

Do we really want our wonderful site to deteriorate into a vitriolic battlefield rather than a site that anyone of any age can comfortably participate in?

I've been told a couple of times recently that people will leave PRE in droves due to certain moderating issues.  I'm quite aware I'm not perfect and it's easy to have a blinkered outlook at times being the only person doing it but I started the site because I like to talk footy not to play policeman.

I really think there's way too much credence placed on the position of site moderators and that in our own little way we should all share the responsibility of ensuring PRE is as pleasant for as many of us as possible.  The main way we can achieve that is to post our opinions without swearing, personal insults and abuse.

I've always wondered how people on websites such as these would respond if the players were able to pick a supporter and come and sledge them in their own workplace and call them duds, how people would respond. I wonder if all the people posting here are the highest performers in their particular field of endeavour. I'm guessing 99% of the people here, aren't, but that doesn't mean they're duds. I bet almost everyone here goes to work and tries to produce to the utmost of their talents, even if they aren't the best XXXXX in the company, let alone the state.

Like it or not, the guys we all criticise (some more viciously than others) are actually trying. I don't think there's a player on our list who doesn't try give their all when they run out onto the park. Just like you might not be the highest of the elite performers in your job, they aren't in theirs. Just like you wouldn't want to be sledged by customers, clients or colleagues, they don't either. Have some respect for the guys who put a jumper on and run out their each season for us, who put their physical well being in jeopardy for our entertainment, because I expect most of us will forget them by the time they turn 40. Wanting someone gone because they can't help the club is one thing, but the insults and derogatory comments are just low.

Well said General and Rosy.

I too believe that if you don't have anything constructive to say then don't say anything at all. Encouragement is twice as good for the confidence that a bowl full of vitriol. I too believe that a lot of RFC people read this site, and sometimes cringe when I see some of the nasty posts against our players, especially against our younger players.

I know I haven't posted much on the site, but I'm with Rosy. Well said. Hopefully all this negativity can cease. I really think we shouldn't be eating our own. Sure everyone has their opinion, but some of the opinions just go overboard.

I actually think tiger feral is a term of endearment like tiger fanatic. I guess it's all in the context of how it's used but I'm proud to be one....I think. ;D

Very well put there Rosy, and agree with you all the way.

You have been doing a superb job, and really appreciate you time & effort on this fourm.

As a moderator, please don't feel that you are playing 'the cop'. I will dread the day this forum spews out the crap just like BLOS.

:clap
