Agree about the Director of Coaching as can be seen from below, however I worry about that person approving game plans.

In looking back at this, before Miller's sacking, we have only replaced Miller with Cameron and he is List Manager as well. If he is doing the list review then leave him with that and bring in the Technical Director to do the above without the recruiting job.

As you say, other clubs have looked at this type of restructure and looking at our series of coaching failures we need to try something different. As posted on another thread, we've tried experienced and novice coaches, shortened and long contracts and nothing seems to work.

If the "culture" really is the problem then let's attack it at source with a trend setting approach. I don't think adding more coaches really affects anything if the traditional structure of coaching remains.
good post RT

First of all, Wallace, Royal, King and Rawlings must go. But further to that, the coaching department needs to be restructured. I would love it if we appointed a "Director of Coaching" type role... similar to what Collingwood offered Rodney Eade 5 years ago. This person would oversee the whole coaching department, sign off on game plans, and to generally be a father figure to all the other coaches. The most obvious choice for this type of position would be one of the more old school type coaches in Matthews, Sheedy or Malthouse.

But we have had a Director of Coaching already, Brian Royal, what's wrong with that? >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D

I would like to see a whole lot of actions that will encourage me to renew my membership next year, namely:
  • a new coach (come on down Hardwick)
  • a major clean out of the list
Richo to play one more year under a new coach - I really would love to see him retire on a high
a major clean out of training personnel

1 - Will happen soon. The review has been going on for the past 3 years or so.

3 years? Really?
Seems like a long time considering the Cats one took 6 weeks during the off season.

I wonder how disruptive the review has been if at all? Would people be treading more gently than usual perhaps?

There was already murmurs that the coaching staff weren't all that thrilled with Freezer's gung ho approach during last season.

Food for thought anyway.

Yup, some of the actions of the review have been implemented already, such as Craigieburn and Punt Rd redevelopment, and more recruiting staff.

They've identified the need for more people in the sports science area (and hopefully better than what we have), etc etc.

...get cracking on the ...renewing of Punt Road. The facilities SUCK, they need to be upgraded/replaced the sooner the better ...

Rode by Punt Road the other night on the train and the ground lighting was on and there was a large group out training. The lighting was so bad, however, couldn't make out who it was. My back yard lights up better. Do we still train at night these days? If so, there's the cause of our skill errors. Wouldn't know if you hit the side of a barn under the Punt Road lights.

First thing that needs doing is our scouting, recruiting and list management to be properly funded and managed.
Second our player development and conditioning needs the same treatment as our recruiting.
If we get these basics up to par then we have a decent chance of building a competent and competitive team.
Get things wrong here and no amount of wishing, hoping and coaching overhauls will make a blind bit of difference.

Well said and ITS GOING TO TAKE TIME TO DO IT, we have to be patient with all of this. We are going to cop some floggings over the next couple of years, if we only play kids plus maybe 4-6 mid 20/into 30's players. But other teams have chosen to go down that path and its worked, we have no other option but to do likewise.

discounting the statement by that nobody karl langdon re us signing malthouse, i have heard a few media outlets state richmond have a preference for a younger/development type coach. is that the right way to go? i guess we could debate the pros and cons of this until the cows come home...

I want two things:
1) A team that can play well under pressure and apply it themselves - consistently - results irrelevant
2) A coach who doesn't top up and who uses more than three ND draft picks a year

Anyone who can do that Matthews/Malthouse/Hardwick etc I will laud.
