Revamp Draft Idea (Tanking)

i reckon the person who has put up the best idea by far is our own coach... award prizemoney for the 4 points... then there will be no tanking.

i also believe the afl have gone from one extreme to the other with the priority picks. last year it was too generous, this year it's not generous enough. i've always believed the bottom 8 teams should get the first 8 picks, then the priority picks at pick 9, 10, etc then the teams who make the finals get their first round picks.

Bring on the draft lottery like the NBA.

Don't forget only the first four picks are done via the lottery, then the order is decided by whatever team left has the worse record. So the worst team gets the fifth pick if everything goes against them.

Ian4 is right Tw's idea about playing for $$$ is the best and Ian's idea for the priority picks seems about right.

Until recently I favoured the NBA system, but it doesn't prevent clubs resting players near the end of the season and winning isn't encouraged - who cares if you win 3 games or 6 games, you still miss the finals and have the same chance of landing a high pick.

TW's idea had some merit and was dismissed too quickly by the AFL. The weakness is that prizemoney might not be sufficient incentive for the interstate financial powerhouses to win (against the lure of a high pick) if they find themselves at the other end of the ladder.

I reckon a variation of the NBA system is in order - the bottom eight sides get one ball in the draw for each win, i.e. if you finish with 11 wins you get 11 chances in the draw, for 2 wins you get 2 balls in the draw etc. Of course some will argue that it's preferable to finish 9th with 11 wins and have a chance at the top pick than finish 8th with 12 wins, possibly get flogged in an elimination final and get pick 9.

As DDT said, there's probably no perfect system, but there are systems much better than the current one.
