Heya

I dunno if its my TV or just my perception or that the players are shrinking into themselves like a todger on a cold day with the beatings they are getting in games... But is RFC the lightest in the comp?

With the exception of probably Richo (and this might just be a feeling with no hard evidence to suport it) where are our power forwards and brick-wall backmen? Who is recognised as an enforcer?

I reckon a few slabs of Harden-up over the off season is needed.

Fun Ha!

I have been noticing that Lids, in particular, is looking smaller than he did last year. He had started to build himself a nice set of guns, shoulders and pecs last year but seems to have slimmed down this year. Perhaps it's more running he's doing playing more midfield roles?

They are underdone in terms of weight IMHO. Look at Jack Riewoldt he's at least 10kg below what he should be, he's been at the club now for 3 years and still looks the same as he did first day he arrived.

Someone on another thread advised that the players have been told to cut down on their weight so not to sacrifice their speed. If that's the case then it clearly has'nt worked and it makes it much easier for the opposition to break tackles, push our players out etc.

Nope definitely underdone in my book.

Shows our stupidity and poor reading of how the modern game is played. Geelong and Hawthorn even St Kilda are not super quick, they are strong. They break tackles or it requires more than one opponent to bring them down then they give to a team mate in space who looks quick but is really just in the space created by his mate.

Pretty simple, not so for us!

The funny thing is that Angus has bulked up heaps since coming, Jacko looks to be at a good size now too
not too many others have though

Raines and Cogs have lost a bit to, prolly from their injuries or to try and overcome them

Collins is still very light and is 21 now

I thought it took a few years of gym/pre-seasons to gain weight/strngth correctly, especially for the KP players. Not everyone comes in with a body like J.Brown or J. Roughead. Even Buddy appears to be having issues getting his weight right and he's been in the system longer than Jack.

I'd bet in terms of weight/strength Jack is a long way in front of where he was when first drafted.

+1

I remember seeing Lid's weight in the Herald Sun Season magazine and thinking it was a miss print, but later on catching up couldnt believe how much size he'd lost. Lids is also one of the fortunate few that blows out with muscle from just looking at a dumbbell.

Our club has got to realise that real speed isn't in the legs but in the hands and mind. We rely on running bounces to break the lines. The leading teams rely on constructive handball.

TW still had the players being developed for a fast running style of game, so what you see is guys who are more lean than bulk, but if you put our list head to head with every other club, I bet we would be pretty close to the average.

However, one thing I did notice from the bushfire photo day was the boys are all pretty big fella's. I am 180cm and 82kgs and I was feeling pretty dwarfed.

Rememeber Wallace's famous "sailor's leg's "comment when he first arrived, another reason you should give it away now, you had 5 years to fix all that.

And working beautifully too ghost as our win/loss ratio attest. ;D

compare jack to ben reid, lachy hansen, gumbleton. all from his year. all similar bodies.
not saying weve got a big team but i think jack's body is coming along ok.

Riewoldt looks nothing like what he did in his first season!

FWIW, body mass index (weight / height2)for each club, listed players only:

Cb  BMI
--------
St 24.14
Ad 24.19
Fr 24.30
Ri 24.34
Es 24.37
Me 24.38
WB 24.39
Br 24.47
Ca 24.52
Co 24.58
NM 24.80
WC 24.86
PA 24.91
Sy 25.05
Ha 25.16
Ge 25.24

'Normal' is regarded as 18.5 - 25 range. Sydney, Hawthorn and Geelong are supposedly overweight!

In addition to the debatable merit of BMI, it's well known that some clubs fudge the player measurements which are taken in the pre-season, so make of it what you will.

Body builders bulk up with a high weight programme plus plenty of protein. They tend to get a little fat but then cut down the food and add some aerobic exercise to trim their body size/shape if they are entering a competition.

It takes years to permanently change your body shape as the body must not only build up muscle but also the tendons and blood supply to support the structural change. Once established a lay off can lose muscle size but that can be quickly regained because the long-term structural tendons and veins etc are still in place.

It must be terrible hard for 18 year olds to maintain the required aerobic fitness level, improve skill levels, learn the team game plan and still have the time and energy to engage in a weight training program to produce quick weight gain results.

Personally, I think our player development coach should reduce the aerobic training of some of the younger players the first year , put them in the gym and let them put on a little fat in order to gain the muscle. Tell them not to be concerned if only playing seconds football as the target is “x” kg weight gain. At year’s end they will still have a reasonable aerobic level that can quickly build up the second pre-season providing there is the right aerobic programme

hmm geelong wce ave 89kg. at the top end of the scale. stkilda ave 84kg.at the bottom end of the scale.richmond ave 86kg in the middle of the scale.

i think the key is the top say 30 players and what they average out at.
collins edwards and nahas are probably the only smalls mediums on the list who are not close to where they need to be.there are others could most certainly do with 2 or 3 kg.

its the talls that lack weight and size gourdis vickery thursfield mcguane rance riewoldt putt moore post graham pattison are all any where from 5 to 10 kg under weight.

i think stkilda is so light because they have a lot of smalls on their list 180cm and under about a dozen i think and they are nearly all under 80kg.
