It looked to me like Terry was afraid to take the game on.
This theory has me puzzled. At first, I thought maybe it was about finding touch early. The conditions were difficult out there yesterday - Maybe it was all about getting used to the conditions and using the ball better. But, we couldn't even manage that properly.
There is also the theory that our players may have been overwhelmed by the occassion. Many times when we went forward, we kicked it inside F50 in a hurry. Last week our forward line moved around - players led up the ground, whilst others made position. Yesterday, we kicked to a contest in our forward line and most of our targets were sitting closely to their respective opponents. I was also frustrated at the number of times we kicked long going through the centre to a weak advantage at CHF.
It may well have seemed Terry and his Tigers weren't prepared to take the game on, but it sure as hell looked like they were keen to let Carlton take the game on. Carlton on numerous occassions, easily kicked the ball back into play, whereas Richmond (in the 2nd half) were finding it difficult to spot up a man.
I think the hard running back into defence game has worked for us this year, but I'm not so sure it worked well yesterday. Big game at the G in front of 70K people and we were prepared to let Carlton move the ball (with ease) inside their forward line. It was only a matter of time before we would run out of legs and the likes of Fev would come to the party.
We should have hurt the Blues on the scoreboard on many occassions yesterday. But \, as they say, when you miss your opportunities in a game, they always come back to bite you in the finish.
