RICH V CARL - GAME THREAD

Again, not a fan, but it was probably one of, if not McMuffin's best game for us today. Hit most targets, unlike a lot of his team mates.

I'm still not happy with the way this looks as there are "big" question marks on a lot of these players especially Johnson but he is captain and that is the only thing that is keeping his place in the side

The first 20 minutes of todays game resembled a first half FA Cup Final;
With all those Tiger greats in the rooms before the match, surely that would have lifted the Tigers to come out and attack like hungry Tigers? Or is that the coaches responsibility?
A friend of mine was telling me that Richmond looked nervous in the pre game warm up - Terry's FA Cup style was designed at calming things down a little.

Yeah exactly skills thought the same. That first quarter there was no defensive pressure on Calton coming out of defense because we were so busy running back to flood the defense and fill Fevola's area. There were a number of occassion in that first quater where if we applied defensive pressure in our 50 we would have forced a turn over and offered us another opportunity. Several times they made mistakes, fumbled and bumbled but with no one within a country mile were able to gather, compose and set it up of half back. Fortunately they didn't do it that well either or we coud have been shot by quarter time.

It looked to me like Terry was afraid to take the game on.

This theory has me puzzled. At first, I thought maybe it was about finding touch early. The conditions were difficult out there yesterday - Maybe it was all about getting used to the conditions and using the ball better. But, we couldn't even manage that properly.
There is also the theory that our players may have been overwhelmed by the occassion. Many times when we went forward, we kicked it inside F50 in a hurry. Last week our forward line moved around - players led up the ground, whilst others made position. Yesterday, we kicked to a contest in our forward line and most of our targets were sitting closely to their respective opponents. I was also frustrated at the number of times we kicked long going through the centre to a weak advantage at CHF.
It may well have seemed Terry and his Tigers weren't prepared to take the game on, but it sure as hell looked like they were keen to let Carlton take the game on. Carlton on numerous occassions, easily kicked the ball back into play, whereas Richmond (in the 2nd half) were finding it difficult to spot up a man.
I think the hard running back into defence game has worked for us this year, but I'm not so sure it worked well yesterday. Big game at the G in front of 70K people and we were prepared to let Carlton move the ball (with ease) inside their forward line. It was only a matter of time before we would run out of legs and the likes of Fev would come to the party.
We should have hurt the Blues on the scoreboard on many occassions yesterday. But \, as they say, when you miss your opportunities in a game, they always come back to bite you in the finish.

I can't believe Wallet, just how dumb does he think we are?

He has contradicted himself, as only last week he said that 4 players were up for selection, and how many do you bring back as they were a bit underdone. Well he brought back the other two so they are all effectively back anyway.

Surely he could have selected another match fit player, or Schulz to help down back. I feel for Moore he was all lost at sea, no support and did well despite this. Using Terry's logic why didn't he drop Simmonds and bring in Titch then, a small for a tall makes great sense to me, you doofus.

The worst part was I could see it coming in the 3rd quarter and just felt the same empty feeling that's been there for the last 2 years - it doesn't even hurt anymore. Scary part is it is almost expected.

Kelvin Moore (special mention - superb effort against overwhelming odds), Richo, Deledio, Bowden, Mitch Morton, Cleve hold your heads high you were the few to display some "Tiger Spirit" (if it still exists).

Wallace and Miller should have been escorted out of the Punt Rd Oval last night and banished forever.

If Gary March doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to condemn this performance and begin an immediate re-structuring of all things football related, he can join Wallace and Miller also.

I still maintain Riewoldt is not there as a KPF yet.
Very little influence again on the game again today.
I want to see Hughes and Schulz in the forward 50m with Richardson on the wing for a few weeks not just a quarter.

Oldie you are so full of it. Jack had a slow game and only got the ball 12 times. Do you know how many times Sarge had more than 12 posessions in the last four years when you wanted him selected every week. Once. Gets some balance.

Jack knows how to play football, Sarge knows how to take a fly once every couple of weeks. This shows up in goal assits where Jack is a lot more prolific than Sarge and has been since his first game.

As for Sarge in the backline, he looks a lot better there than forward in my view. But name me a player he as stopped this year? We already have a Bowden.

Why are we the only club in the Afl when we lose the lead are totally incapable of remotely even looking like getting it back? As soon as they went 2 goals up everyone around me knew we were shot. No wonder we regulary give up 5 goal leads so often with this soft attitude.

Bring back the spirit of the team that played under Northey for a few years - they never gave in like this.

if we cant play man on man against carlton (without judd) we are kidding ourselves
why we had to resort to loose players in the backline and flooding from the start amazes me
you will never win finals playing that way and the good sides all play man on man contested footy
i can understand a flood against the cats but not carlton, if that is the gameplan wallet then its time to go
play the kids man on man and let them be taught what its like to play contested footy - regardless of if we win or lose

We went in with

Simmonds - injured
Richo - injured
Tambling - injured (apparently)
Johnson - underdone?
King - underdone?

Add Polak's injury early in the game and we were always going to be in trouble. Probably why Wallace wanted to avoid a fast-running shootout.

Brown's six or seven points, didn't help our cause. should of been 4 goals up at quarter time.
The loss of Luke and Will made it harder, however, Moore stood up.

Two points:
1. Hyde is not good enough to be in the side, clearly seen, as he was coming on and off the bench. We should try another youngster, it would be a win, win, situation.
2. Need to try a new ruck combination (someone else who can tap the ball directly to our players). Even if Troy was to start at CHB and then follow the ball, he would be very useful. The other ruckman will need only to ruck at centre bounces and remain at CHF. At the moment, we must be the worst side to get the ball out when it hits the deck.

I don't think King was fully fit. But he shouldn't have been selected in the first place.
I don't understand Richmond policy on player selection. Why was Shultz over looked?

What?... The conditions yesterday were perfect for footy, do you think it was a bit chilly or something for the boys? If that is the case we are on a downward spiral big time!

Your point re not taking the game on is closer to the truth by a country mile. A very winnable game lost by playing too defensively especially in the first 2 quarters.

I know Browny had an absolute shocker but it has to be said Richo(slight injury or not) had his worst game of the season as well.
Terrible that both our guns had absolute shockers on such an important day for the RFC.
