Keep him. But going on a slightly different tack, I was listening to MMM at the ground and Garry Lyon, Brian Taylor were saying the other clubs have worked Richo out on the wing. Loin chop was saying that they put a fast attacking player on him who goes forward. Richo doesn't play accountable football as we all know he'll peel off contest and run forward. His player goes to his forward area and scores. Jarrad Waite scored 3 goals on Richo playing on the wing. Loin chop said they did the same to him in the NAB cup v Coll and the Regional match V Bris. ie the winger Richo plays on kicks goals on him. He needs to play closer to his man.
I don't usually pay too much attention to Lyon but this observation seemed accurate.
Is he right?
This is a croc and the typical dribble you hear from Gary Lyon.
The problem isn't Richo's accountability but our own ability to control the ball.
If we don't have possession often enough, then you'd need to put a seperate tag on Richo's opponent. When Frawley was coach and used Richo up the ground it worked perfectly against the dogs, but failed against the Saints the next week because they had the ball 60% of the time. Nick Reiwoldt therefore ran forward and killed us. I'd like to think we're a bit better than that now..........but then again....
If we win enough of the ball, then there isn't a player in the competition that would be more dangerous unmanned running forward then Richo. In this case the opposition typically hold a man back in our half waiting for him to work forward. The result of not doing this is a 5 goal game to richo from the wing.
Bear in mind Richo kicked one goal and hit the post twice which is as close as you can get to kicking 3 goals himself, this from a game where we didn't even enter the forward 50 fourty times.
The other thing to bear in mind is this -
The first goal Waite kicked, Richo was laying on the ground with Fevloa on his back. That isn't a lack of accountability on Richo's part, but his effort to help Simmonds clean up his stuffed up drop mark. The second goal, Richo was bolting into defense to fill the hole, as is the team plan. His opponent took possession and goaled from 60m out. Although i was at the game i also was listening on the radio and heard Robert Walls bagging Richo calling him defensively lazy and telling all and sundry that while Waite ran forward and goaled, Richo was running into Richmond's forward line hoping that his team mates would gain possession and hand him an easy uncontested goal.
Walls was talking total rubbish, because as i said, Richo was bolting into defense to fill the hole, but hey why ruin a good story with the truth Robert? Anyone who taped the game can go back and take a look. You will see Richo commit to the contest in the middle, see the ball go out the other side so he bplted forward. This was the correct strategy because Waite had held back and was 20m away from Richo when he took possession.
The only way Richo could avoid this happening would be to not charge in when the ball is bounced. We didnt win the clearance, so we got hurt - partly because Waite for whatever reason held himself back and didnt commit himself to the centre contest - probably not a bad idea considering how badly we were getting smashed in there!
Let's not which coach it was that turned Richmond from being the hardest team in the competition into the softest - all in the space of one pre-season. 10 years later we still havent recovered.
The strategy of playing an offensive player against Richo is not new, read above re: Reiwoldt. It was tried last year! It will work if we are totally crap like Thursday night and allow the opposition to control the ball, but it wont work if we are even half competative because Richo marks everything one out, let alone uncontested, and he has more endurance to get forward more often than his direct opponent.
