People have been wondering for a few years why other clubs don't simply pick up the Richmond game style - Robbo et al keep saying its about desire and team, well that's bull. If you don't have a lot of speed AND endurance AND (enough) skill all the desire in the world isn't going to help you - you have to recruit that. Looking at this years crop I reckon that message has sunk in, if you cant run fast, all day, over and over, you don't get drafted in modern football.

I also think clubs are trying to figure out how to maintain the press, defend in the forward line etc with bugger all rotations - again - if you cant run, fast, all day, you have no place on an AFL list. (ok - not entirely true a very limited number of 'specials' - specialist forwards mostly like MRJ - will get a pass).

It is also quickness of mind. You can be super fast but you also have to have that football thinking ability

Put Riewoldt's football brain into Deledio's athletic ability and you have the next superstar

Ive said that since 1974.
Football skill is good, but the skill of being in involved in the play continually is more important.
And we have a truck load currently,
Bolton, Short, Baker, Lambert, Rioli, castagna, Flappers, Pickett all could play 5 qtrs today.
Thats what overwhelmed Geelong our continued efforts.
That's why they used pick 17 to pick up a kid that has barely played footy, but because he runs like a greyhound.
Collingwood drafted at least 3 kids that have high endurance.

We have changed the way footy is played. With longer qtrs and less rotations, good luck stopping us.

IMO the game is being sped up at such a terminal rate that being able to be quick of mind and have the skillset to execute in close and under pressure is premium.

The running side of the game the other prerequisite.

Whether you're tall or small, today's prototype player is a Fast Twitch endurance machine.Think Bruce Lee with the staying power of Cliffy Young ... ok maybe not Cliff...

We waltz in Grab a Rioli, (as you do) then pretty much checked out for the rest of the night.

Tigers basically gave the draft the Bird last night.

I am right to think that the only difference between Castagna and Butler was that the later could not swerve at speed to break a line, made more poor decisions and was messy under pressure, and could not take a contested mark, but not by much. But playing for St Kilda he looks a lot better.

I'd say all that is true BUT also, that this was half the problem with Butler.

The other half was that his all round defensive game wasn't as good. He didn't position himself as well, could roll between opponents as quickly, cover as much ground and get to as many contests. Ball in hand and on the attack Butler and Castagna are close - but when the opposition have the ball or its in dispute (60% of game time) Castagna (and Dan Rioli) are so far ahead its not funny.

In a way this kind of analysis is also exactly why a lot of old and bolds don't love modern footy. Players like Castagna, Rioli, McIntosh, Broad are super valuable, lauded and given games despite (traditionally) "better" and "more skilled" players are sidelined. Why? Because their combination of speed, endurance, overall game sense and willingness to commit to the team is what makes them premiership players rather than being "exciting". These guys are in the best 22 of the premier and probably wouldn't be in the best 22 of the teams we beat.

Thats why RFC wins real flags now and others win fantasy leagues.

Not so silly. From Wikipedia:
'Young had remained single throughout his life, but after the 1983 race, at 62 years of age, he married 23-year-old Mary Howell. ' ;)

Smart footballer Dan, asked to play a role, did as asked and suppressed his instincts.

Butler faded the longer the year went. Was the player we let go. Went missing in losses.

At certain times, still timid. And still wouldn’t have played at Richmond in 2020.

Sounds like my footy career back in the day. I could mark, kick, handball and run around all game but couldn’t get the ball.
Or as the great Jack Dyer would say "he's where the ball aint" :)

Me too Sin, me too.
