That's because all players are made out to be "role models".....why is it that because you play AFL you are automatically classed as a 'role model' for society?
And because of this, any indiscretion is highlighted and magnified times 100.

Because the supporters, especially kids, look up to the players and try to emulate them.

And it's a Cryin' Shame "G" that the Kid's of Today have to be subjected to all the "Off-Field" Scandal that makes Today's Society the way it is.................Sad , but true.

I'll bet there's not a 30 year old or Elder , who posts on this Board that can recall "Their" idol growing up (and we all had 'em) who's name was in the Paper's or on TV for anything other than what it was they were Famous for.

I recall Muhammed Ali in the 60's and 70's being Hated by a lot of people for being a Loud-mouth , a Draft-Dodger etc and he was Despised by many....................Compared to Today's Clown's , he was a pussy cat , something to be laughed at , but never taken to seriously , nowaday's people are Dying at the hands of these Fool's , yet somebody alway's want's to make an excuse for them.

Nothing wrong with having Role-Models (as in Footballer's), it just takes a whole lot more commonsense to be displayed by Today's Idols and for the Justice system to show them NO favourtism if they do run foul of the Law's , that's what's changed over the last 30 years or so , they all think that because they are "Special" that they can get preferential treatment , until that ceases this type of behaviour well get worse before it get's better .

"74" , are you saying we're being "Out-Coached" ?

Is Terry accountable ? Will he ever answer a tough question in regard to this subject ?

The Question that just keeps coming to mind for me is ..................How many Games are we BEHIND where we were Last Year and how can that be deemed Acceptable ???

I just don't understand that !

At this stage we could end up with 10 LESS WINS than 2006 , yet some Supporter's think "WE'RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK" for a rosy future with the Playing and Coaching Staff at present.

Where's the Logic ????

Guess I've lost the plot as to what it takes to belong to a successful club.

Speaking for myself I've got hope because of the kids are starting to show something and will only improve. They're starting to follow Wallace's game plan and when the players get more experience, hardness and muscle I think they will be quite formidable. We're already close to the quickest team in the league and the skills are starting to emerge. I do think we need more top players and our structure isn't quite right yet which is why I want the top draft picks.

Ok "G" , Fair enough ...................I understand your line of thinking as far as needing "More Top Player's" , that's a very blantant need.
So let's examine where the "Top Draft Picks" are from the last 5 years and tell me how they have helped us achieve the "Lofty" position we now garnish in the year 2007 ?

That's the point I'm trying to make here.................How long is the "right amount of time" before a No 1 or 10 or 20 should be leading the side to more Win's than when he first arrived ?
At 1 -11 -1 , surely those picks of the last 5 years should be accountable in some small way for that record , shouldn't they.

I just think , WAY to much emphasis is put on the Draft that's all , make the Squad of Today take some responsibility for the position we're in and let them fight to get us back up the Ladder. If it was just a matter of next year's Pick's turning us around , then why has Riewoldt only seen the playing field for half a game this year ? Answer's pretty simple , he's NOT capable of that type of Performance (Yet) ...............and neither will next year's or in all likelyhood , the year's after that.
Some "proven" buy's from other Club's are a far better way to go , eg Polak , ofcourse there's plenty of "Dud's" too , No need for me to even go there , as we've had plenty of late , but that's where your Coaches and Scout's earn their money.
Draft systems are over-rated in my opinion , seen them for years over here in all the Major Sport's , yes, they are a way for a team to improve , but you'd better be patient , because an overnight success your not going to see , just doesn't happen anymore.
So "G" , can you wait another 4 or 5 years before seeing this Club compete for a Flag ?
If so , fair enough ......................Not Me , 25 years is long enough , the time to be in the "Runnin'" is NOW , had a Gutful of Mediocracy and excuses , I WANT TO HEAR THAT CLUB SONG EVERY WEEK and make no apologies for it.

IMHO top draft picks aren't the be all and end all, they're only the start, which we can build the rest of the team around. Grant Thomas didn't twig to this to St Kildas detriment.

Jackson started on Montagna - who had 8 posessions in the first 20 minutes. He continued to play on him into the second quarter before being relieved of the duty and then went back onto him in the 3rd quarter and saw the game out on him.

Montagna absolutely flogged Jackson.

Foley played on the ball and was tagged by Luke Ball (as Ball spoke about on the Sunday Show this morning).

by the way: great game to watch. free flowing, fast, skilled, reasonably even

Yeah, it was....I wasn't shattered over the loss or anything...as it was only a little burst by the Saints early in the last quarter that was the difference.

Found our match-ups in the backline interesting last night; Most would argue why TW didn't use Polak or Thristfield on Reivoldt? TW was happy to keep Polak blocking space in front of Gehrig, but Fraser held back most of his leads all night - He led to the pockets on most occassions and this helped Thurstfield (particularly with his closing speed).

The most interesting part about Raines on Rievoldt and King on Milne, was that both Rievoldt & Milne played alot up the ground. This was obviously used to take King & Raines away from the sweeping role they have played very well in recent weeks. With Deledio being "tagged" in defence, Lyon was obvioulsy trying to nullify Richmond's run.

When St Kilda's midfield got on top midway through the third term, the game was well and truly over.

Totally agree on the Tambling soft call. A lot of us have been very patient with this guy, but his lack of intent is a massive weakness that can't be ignored any more. I lost count of the amount of times he short stepped it tonight.

Agree Red. Bling's got to increase his intensity. It looks plain awful.

Deledio played most of the game in the backline, Tambling also spent time in the backline and Raines played on Riewoldt. With matchups like that we had no chance of winning.
Best tanking of a game for a long time congrats to Walla$e.

Yep either Terry's the worst coach we've had in a long time or he's a very good one. ;)
I find it virtually impossible to believe he would have continued unchanged with some of the setups he had last night without an ulterior motive.

Does Pettifer have a record with the Tribunal?

I know he's been fined for wrestling a couple of times, but I thought he's been reported once or twice before and reprimanded. If he goes for whatever happened today, it might be a double whammy if he has a record.
Reported last year for a late spoil against Freo. Got off with a reprimand but has 83.75 points hanging over his head.

Apologies for the inaccurate post, apparently any leftover points are wiped after 12 months.

It was good to see Whitey get a game. :)

I think so too, Trapped

I also hope he stays in the team for the rest of the season and gets more ground time, similar to what Jake King has been afforded, and we've seen how good Kingy has been once he got more confidence by given more and more time on the ground.

Whitey gives us some pace and he's not afriad to dash forward and have a crack...which is good, when some in the team like to 'mess' about with the ball on half-back.

Well the way the NBA draft works is so complicated as to who get's the No.1 pick you'd have to a Philadelphia Laywer , a Rhodes Scholar and Merlin the Wizard to figure it out.
...

Thanks jack. Have done some reading and as you say, there has been speculation regarding tanking.

Still makes sense to me if you put the bottom 8 teams in a ballot with chances of getting #1 along the lines of:

16th 30%
15th 23%
14th 17%
13th 12%
12th 8%
11th 5%
10th 3%
9th 2%

How about a more radical approach and kill two birds with one stone. Two leagues, a premier division and a second division. Get a few more teams making 10 or 12 teams per division. At the end of the season, bottom 2 teams go down, top 2 teams go up. Each division teams will play each other twice taking away the bias draw issue. Teams in the premier league will not be trying to tank in fear of dropping to second division. Teams in second division wont try and tank, or less likely to, as the difference in picks is not as great against the teams they will be playing against next year, and the hard work that is required to move back into the premier division. Teams in second division given more monetary assitance to ensure no drain of players to premier division.

That's of course if you believe in full-on tanking, which I am sceptical about. I'm sure this idea presents a number of issues I haven't thought about but these could be discussed/nutted out. I've always liked the idea of poor performing teams having to suffer the ultimate consequence. Based on the last 20 years the Tigers would probably be in 3rd division.
