Richmond supporters to blame for lack of team success?

Tigerblood said:
Tony Jewell said a few years ago that Richmond admins have always been s&%$-scared of the supporter base.

I think the problem is they haven't truly understood what the supporter base wants. For years we've been crying for a bottoming-out, but we keep hearing that "the fans won't stand for several more years in the wilderness".

What we can't stand is several more years treading water in the middle of the table.

I agree I think the desire of fans in misinterpreted. Fans tend to support for life, people inside a football club only have their jobs for a few years and need ongoing success to keep their jobs.

In that circumstance who is more likely to want the quick fix and who will go the long term soultion? It wasn't fans calling for the Sanchez or Polak trade, it wasn't fans calling for Kingsley or Graham. Fans can take some of the rap for Cuz, but that the exception.

the board is responsible because for years they have lacked the courage and determination to make tough decisions and change the culture

I definitely didn't ask for Paul Hudson.

The club should of traded Richo years ago but no one had the balls to upset the ferals!!!!!!
Maybe, but you should have been delisted first.

Funny thread and suggestion. I don't feel the least bit responsible and I don't think even the most negative supporter is responsible. In fact Richmond would be extinct if it wasn't for it's supporters.

Richmond fans fair-weather? There's been a cyclone above Punt Road for 27 years and we've been standing under it in stubbies and thongs.

well put. I've just had the speedos on myself though.

And you could go on down the line. If you look the majority of trades have has lukewarm or outright hostile reception by the majority of fans. Noone who really looks at the evidence could claim their is a systemic culture of fans supporting 'quick fix' player trades or recycling.

Ok I will take the blame for expecting us to win more than 1 game so far, have a game plan and asking questions about where we are heading.
We should just sit back and accept medicority and never aspire to play finals. If we had the guts ro renew Wallys contract we would have a future.

if your mate got told no finals in 25 out of the next 27 years, then even his own arse would look attractive

can't believe i'm saying this but i half agree with diggler. if the new coach forces richo into retirement the supporters would tear punt road oval to shreds. a lot of us (me not included) won't stand for it.

Whenever I think about this, I see a lot more logic in keeping Richo than pushing him out the door.

It is trendy to believe there's some hidden genius to the idea though.

Exactly.

Time to just look at the FACTS - Richmond has had amazinginly good attendances and membership in the last 15 years, especially when you take into acccount very little success. - Have a look at the numbers - they speak for themselves, you can't argue with them.

It is a compelte myth our supportets are 'fair weather' it is simply not supported by the numbers. It is a MYTH that is peddled by opposition supporters because they (wrongly) associate lack of success with poor support.

North Melbourne get 15,000 for two Melbourne games in a row (and in truth have had pathetic attendances for years) , they made the finals most years in the last 15, so what are they if we are fair weathered? Don't give me the 1925 starting thing, what about Hawthorn?

The thing about Richmond supporters being inpatient is stupid - we've put up with this for 25 years. Everyone I speak to has loathed the mature age recruits (with Cousins being the one exception). The truth is if a the club could be well run and give us a PROPER PLAN that would deliver sustained success in 5 or even 7 years supporters would take it in an instant.

I've heard this sort of thing said many times over the years about many players, but it won't happen. Talkback lines will run hot for a few weeks, but the supporters will accept it, yes you'll lose a few, but most will still stay hoping for success. Sacking one player won't do it, though. The entire football department needs to be overhauled and fresh talent needs to be injected into it.

difference is, North just don't have many supporters, never have regardless of ladder posi. Combination of small suburb and zero success during the leagues development years.

Thing with the tiges is we have a heap of supporters. A heap of die hard ones, and a heap of fairweather ones, like the other big Vic clubs, they are all the same.

hmm i disagree cameron johnson brown stafford sheesh most were jumping out of their skins. its only been a recent phenomonon (spelling)
where it seems the majority are starting to question the trading of picks for retreads. in a way it saddens me used to have no trouble finding a deluded feral to make fun of. its becoming harder nowadays.

just thought id throw this up as well ferals always losing site of what needs to be done. yep definately part of the problem.

choo choooo

Those questioning some of the outs this week and not seeing the desperate need to have a look at and play the youngsters we have.

If there's any blame due to the supporters, it's that our continued loyal patronage of the club is in part responsible for players and officials leading comfortable lives despite achieving little of real significance in their jobs.

There was alot of red in that crowd on Saturday night. Significantly more than there was yellow. I think that crowd had to do more with where they are on the ladder rather than us.

On the feral topic, I had a discussion based on what right do we have to demand success of our footy club. What does our membership buy us? The question to me was why do Richmond supporters get so worked up, or feral, when Bulldogs and St Kilda fans have put up with a longer period of non-success yet have never delivered manure to the club (Jeez that guy did our reputations some harm. Hi if you're reading this.) Why are we so passionate about the club?

Why is it that everyone remembers someone delivering manure to Richmond but no one recalls the time someone mailed Melbourne 20 chicken hearts with a note about how they could be given to their players because they lacked some of their own?

Believe the Cats in Blighty's era received a box of sheeps hearts as well. Got a feeling it might have been a bit harder to hide a truck load of chook *smile* from the media than a parcel in the mail.
