Richmond V Bulldogs (Game Day Thread)

Good win, not a great win. Really should have smashed them by 100 points plus such was our dominance. Umpires were bad but we did give away at least 4 stupid free kicks in our forward line that cost us extra goals. Reckon Riewoldt gave away 3 on his own.

We still make way too many stupid errors and bad decisions; the Bulldogs aren't good enough to capitalise on these but good teams like Collingwood will really make us pay. Even though we ended up kicking more goals than points our goal kicking in the first half was abysmal. Again that will cost dearly against top sides.

But it was pleasing that we were able to outscore them in every quarter and press home the advantage, albeit not as well as we should have.

i agree.i walked out of the ground ,happy with the worry..and happy to see us win and knowing we can still be a hell of a lot better...im starting to believe we really might be becoming a very very very exciting team..but serous issue,s with our kicking for goal..we need to bury sides when we have the chance..collingwood,freo and geelong will not let us get away with such terrible wasted opportunities....next week is gonna be very interesting isn't it

Yep should have been a 100 win. Ump cost us a couple and we missed a heap of easy goals in the first half. How was that 50M? it was soft but there (and Dusty's cancelled it out anyway) But is it too much to ask that umpires can work out what 50M actually is? It can't be that hard, that was a 75m penalty, diff between a shot on goal and a soda. It would be so easy to get some rererence points, do some drills and get it consistent, it happens a lot, a 50m penalty can be anywhere from 35m to 75m. Surely they can get it to 45-55m, drives me mental.

I agree, we controlled and dominated the game without really clicking. Good signs. Trajectory looks to be up.

Deledio standing alone, goal side of centre for the first bounce boded well. That was an absolute smashing, even if it didn't show on the scoreboard. First real test next week, can't afford to be wasteful.

If we have ome of the brain fades we had today, better teams will make us pay.

It was such a frustrating game to watch early, mainly due to our misses and the umpiring.

I'll take an 11 goal win any day, I'm still trying to work out if the Dogs are really awful or we just made them look that bad. Even with the umpires playing for them they were still kicked by 11 goals. I doubt we can beat the Pies next week, but this is the NEW Richmond at long last. Looking at the match ups before the game I thought to myself that we should win it easily, but Richmond being Richmond we probably wouldn't and we did win easily. It's turning, it is finally turning at long last.

Agree with what others have said above. Nevertheless it was a great win, now the side needs to really work on goal kicking!!!!

I think they copped a spray about heir goal kicking at quarter time. They were much better for he last three quarters - 16 goals 6 behinds. Hopefully the penny has dropped and we can get that performance consistently over four quarters.

Doggies were terrible today but I thought our pressure and run probably played a big part in it. Bring on next week. I can't wait.

Also thought the game was ridiculously over umpired. 63 total free kicks is a joke. And I don't understand how the team that was first to the ball most of the day and had far more possessions could be so far behind in the free kick count. Hope I don't notice them next week.

Again our dominance was not reflected on the scoreboard in the first half. Thankfully we ran away with a comfortable win.

A good performance but in saying that i thought the Dogs were pathetic.

we wont lose to many games when our best 3 players are Martin, Cotchin and Deledio.

And we have guys like Maric, Riewoldt, Houli and Chaplin stepping up around them.

And we have guys like McGuane stepping up to the plate.

Great game by McGuane today I reckon. Did the hard stuff and put his body on the line today. Not the most skilled guy in the team but his hardness at the ball and opposition player is just as valuable as the most skilled.

Early in the third I was able to sit back and relax and enjoy a really good win. Up and till then, I was worried that despite our dominance, we were only 4 and bit goals up.

The doggies have been brought back to earth, they were out run, out tackled, out marked and barely had a winner all day (perhaps Jones beat Rance)

What I like is that
* each game we are getting better
* seem to learn from each previous game
* was able to run this game out - played a full 4 quarters for the first time in a long time
* not many unforced errors (Houli centring pass a classic from the old days just to remind us what we used to be like)
* playing more as a team - don't think we have any passengers which has been the case now for 3 games.
* the mids are using their pace to take the game on (and as for Lids - he is getting better each game)
* have a good structure around the ground

We are building nicely and are well placed for Collingwood next Saturday. Given we stayed with the Pies last year except for the Daisy 10 min burst early in the third, I am quietly optimistic about being 5 and 0. Our improvement is both through a few new key recruits bringing stability and almost across the whole squad. I am guessing that at this stage we have had no players slip in form compared to last year? Also, did Grimes play against the Pies last year.

Sounds just like the type of player his coach was, doesn't it?

Dogs were made to look pathetic. Without the umpires being up their arses and had we kicked a little straighter than would have been close to a 100pt win.

Agreed.

Some really terrible decisions against us today.

Yep! I must admit to disliking McGuane as a back man but am really enjoying him as a forward. He is so ( for want of a better word here) "reckless" going for the ball and takes no prisoners if they are in his way. I'm loving it as he adds some toughness to our forward line - and he can take a grab too. He certainly must scare a few opposition back men with his kamakazi (sic) mentality. King is another tough nut but McGuane has size about him.

Yep. Who wants to fill the hole in front of Crazy Lukey? When your forwards are intimidating it's a huge bonus.

They took away 4 goals of ours and gave them 2

Gee we are lucky to have 3 rolls royces in Lids, Cotch and Martin. Top shelf all of them. Hopefully Dusty is on his way to a huge season.

Dominated everywhere over the ground. Defence was very strong and surely half of their goals came from the umpires or the howler from Bachar. Chaplin has slotted in beautifully and I can't see any fault in his kicking.

I thought Knights was very effective and great to see him get through the 3 quarters. He adds a touch of class and composure in our forward half. I hope we can find a spot for him over the next month and let him build up his fitness, because he could have some huge games for us. Petterd also looks strong down back and has a decent dip. Too early to call but recruiters seemed to have nailed it again.

I don't think I am unfair against umpires - I was happy to acknowledge excellent umpiring in the Carlton game. But today was U15 umpiring - absolutely pathetic. Ruined the game. While the bad decisions probably went evenly to both teams by the end, I felt it really halted our momentum in the 3rd quarter when it looked like we were on track for an 8-10 goal quarter. Really sad when umpiring is that bad.

Can't wait to see how we match up against the pies - will be a huge game.
