PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

i was suffering from withdrawal sympoms last week so i logged onto bigpond and watched a few richmond matches. because we only won a few i thought i would watch the rich. vs hawthorn match to see where we need improvement and some positives.

for the first three quarters we were leading or well in the match but fell away in the last quarter.

deficiencies
the ruck was a major area in that match with campbell towelling up both simmonds and patterson. he lost about a third of the centre knock outs with his major weakness was his mistiming of his jumps and patterson in paticular took advantage of this.
when you win the other 2/3's you have beaten your opponent.

simmonds had ankle problems this year and patterson will be a bit stronger this year so the contest will a bit more even.

onballers
our onballers did reasonably well untill mitchel was moved into the centre then hawthorn started to dominate.johnson and tuck did well but foley struggled with his tag and was a bit limited.

another preseason under his belt and foley will be a better player, toss cogs into the mix lids and browny for support and we will be well placed to win that duel.

defence simply put we were undersized joel played on roughead and was outmuscled, had 5 kicked on him. thirsty did a great job on buddy but faded towards the end of the match. newman played well raines was good in patches.

putting sarge down back on a roughead would even up that match and a fitter thirsty would be able to finish off the match.

foward line richo was great but for the kicking at goal browny was still a bit underdone pets did some good things and some bad things sarge played one of his better games showing great aggression and lids was good with limited oppotunities.

a fully fit browny will make life hard for the hawthorn defence and putting polak at chf would allow sarge to go down back.

dirty day howat linked up well when out in the open but turns the ball over under pressure which hawthorn is very good at.
hartigan his kicking is just plain poor. raines needs to stop kicking his high passes

although we were beaten by about 8 goals we have far more scope for improvement than hawthorn and a rematch in 08 would see a very close result.
