Richmonds future

I have just had a baby son 6 months ago. The problem is Ive bought him all this richmond gear to wear and play with....

I was born in 83 and when we had dress up day at primary school in your favorite afl team off i went in my richmond stuff. The thing is there was probably 500 people at my school and maybe 10 or 15 of us were in the richmond section. As i was only between the ages of 5 and 11 I guess it didnt annoy me a whole heap (bar the ribbing from my mates) and plus dad convinced me "The sleeping giant" would turn it all around soon. It used to be disheartening as all my mates went to the essendons, the collingwoods and the hawthorns. All those mates of mine have since tasted ultimate success

Now ive heard it for 25 years. I have since become a diehard supporter to the fact where when i was in high school i wouldnt talk to anyone for the rest of the day if we lost, then gradually as I got older Id want to be alone because i knew id end up arguing with someone if they bagged richmond players. Now i live with my wife and son so i suppose its normal not to talk to the wife the day of the footy because all they want to do is annoy you...

Today however i sat down with my son and his milk and me and my beer, watched the coburg team on tv and i was completely gobsmacked. For a team that is meant to of built up for the last 5 years, we had maybe 1 or 2 players that were young that i think can play this year (cotchin and edwards). The other young players richmond have recruited in the past 5 years are doing what exactly? No wonder Richmond have played so poorly this year, theres no1 there to put preassure on for the spots. I thought I heard how good of a list we had this year. We would be a top 8 team if not top 4. How can this happen when i couldnt see 1 player in todays game that had any hope bar cotchin edwards pettifer and cuz maybe of playing for us this year.

My son being 6 months old has no idea with the result and just smiles and laughs but geeez, I sure hope he doesnt go through the crap and bragging I and fellow richmond supporters my age have had to go through. Im just sick of the same crap year in year out. Im sick of waiting for the cricket season to end only for 3 rounds of footy to go passed before i want the cricket back. If richmond wants to remain a socalled big victorian club they might want to consider keeping the young kids interested by maybe winning a flag sometime soon? I can brainwash my son for so long because he cant talk but once he starts asking questions about why he should go for richmond i dont think il be able to give him a positive response.

In summing up we have no youngsters coming through, our best players are all aged over 30, yet every year richmonds new young list are improving and are going to earn the respect because they deserve it? Get real RFC. Stop pretending for my sake, your sake and our futures sake

dunno bout that mate. cotch, vickery, lids, theres promise dont worry

ah, that takes me back. my older brother follows north melbourne and my younger brother fitzroy/brisbane. when we were growing up none of our teams were very successful. since we've become adults they have celebrated 5 flags between them, plus numerous finals campaigns, while we still remain a bunch of losers.

if one day i do decide to have a kid - he/she will have no choice but to follow richmond - but the thing that terrifies me the most is if richmond are still a bunch of losers and my kid will be inluenced by his schoolmate to change teams. it would kill me.

We need to fix a appalling recruiting. Judging by last years draft nothing has changed, why we pick thomson and hislop is beyond me.

We will continue to suck until we fix our drafting and development.

I watched the game this afternoon Yobbsy and I agree. The guys that Coburg had in that team should have torn Casey a new one, but most didn't fire a shot.

Raines, Pettifer coughed it up numerous times, Edwards looks scared even at this level. Cousins and Chimp weren't bad but by no means standouts. Thomson and Hislop what was the point, Schulz didn't do much but the last two weeks was OK. Simmonds played well, but so he should at this level, Vickery has a long way to go as does Putt. Not AFL this year at least.

Game plan was straight out of the seniors, but even at this level the players couldn't execute it. Most passes missed their targets, handballs to either a player who was stationary, not expecting it, or had two blokes about to pounce on him, just bloody woeful. And if anyone thinks Rainsey is a must to get back, get a copy of this game and take a look, not by a long way.

Anyway Yobbsy take heart, my kids were born in 1987 and have never seen sustained Tiger success either, but they still barrack for them even if it's at a quieter level than others..

god who knows.... but this losing is giving me shites....

dont know whether to laugh or :'(

We have another 15 years of this because the draft concessions to GC andthenWest Sydnet give us no hop or rebuilding.

Yobbo mate,

Fear not my friend it is not as bad as it seems. Everyone nowdays expects that kids will develope overnight like judd did or dan rich or joel selwood . The truth is that it takes a number of years for kids to develope no matter who they are. The boys I mentioned before are the exception to the rule but because they are in the spotlight they are the kids we focus on.

We have a dearth of the players in the age that makes a good side (25-29), Players this age are less affected by the "confidence" factor that younger players are and therefore are less inclined to the erratic performances we are seeing.

The talent is there , unfortunately we have to wait . We have to wait for the kids to develope and for a new coach to come and not sap the confidence out of our boys by changing the game plan after they have been learning it for 4 years.

Maybe we should start a 10 year plan

Why? We already have a 30 year plan in motion when Wallace stated that by 2011, we'll be finalist regulars.

I am one who has attended the draft nights etc and have been seduced by the crew about how good our players will be etc but I watch many other teams and marvel at how they pick the gems in the draft and we sometimes do not get the same quality. An example of this and I know it is early days but Ziebell looks very very good and a pure footballer and another is the Dangerfield boy but it escapes me at what number he was chosen in the prior year so don't know if we over looked him meanwhile we have chosen a project player of sorts in Vickery and whilst I hold high hopes for him he has not produced anything at his current level that suggests he is special so is this a worry well time will tell.

On the flipside other sides have also wasted or not got value for picks and North would be a prime example with their trading of early picks for guys that aren't even playing now (Hay & Thompson) can you imagine if we did that and young Hansen has not really come on yet for such a high pick and lets not mention Wells.

Carlton another couple of examples are Livingstone and Wiggins who I am sure were both first rounders which have flopped.

So in fact we are not the only ones that get it wrong but the fact remains we do get it wrong whilst others may not with such frequency.

Football clubs trade on hope and there was no better time to be a Tiger supporter than when we got Cousins everyone one else was jealous of us getting him and our youthful list of talented youngsters at the time but that perception changed very quickly so at one stage we were thought to have an up and coming list so let's hold out hope that they are and they will come on.

At least structure was addressed last draft early on and that can only bode well for the future.

Nice post :clap....I agree and also live in hope, we'll be aiight. Coburg had a pretty bad day by the sounds of it but theyve also had some big wins. We're at a very sticky point in the 'journey' where it could go either way and by the looks of it it's not going as intended BUT if we win tomorrow we're 1 game out of the 8 and all of a sudden it's game and season on.

Yobbmeister we all feel your pain.

I have 3 young boys, 6, 3 and 2. All became members the day after they were born. They love the Tigers, they love singing our great song, they love wearing the jumper.

We went to my oldests first Auskick this morning, they all were wearing Richmond jumpers, as were quite a few others.

There are plenty of young "brainwashed" tigers out there.

And while things might be looking bad at the moment don't forget this.

Things can change very, very quickly.

Look at the Cats, Thompson was about to get the chop and they suddenly clicked.

The mugpies were broke and on the bottom of the ladder, Malthouse had them in 2 successive GF's within 2 years.

Clarkson had the Hawks in the finals within 3 years and a flag in 4.

We all know footy is a funny game, things can change real quick. (at least thats what I am pinning my hopes on!)

Nobody knows what the future holds, but one thing is certain, expect the unexpected.

One day we will be the kings of the AFL jungle once more.

Isn't 2011 the year everything peaks for us?
