Richmonds New Whipping Boy

I have been supporting McGuane all year and firmly believe he is part of our future premiership defence.

Moore - Thursfield - McGuane

These 3 players trully deserve to wear our jumper and represent our club on Grand Final day sometime in the future.

Please, no more negative talk about them, okay? They're the least of our problems.

And why do we need whipping boys? They are for supporters of losing teams who need someone to blame. There doesn't always have to be a whipping boy, and we don't need replacements for Tiv, Hyde, Krakouer etc after they have all been pushed out!

This is a new era.

I still don't get how people keep knocking Thustfield as a key defender myself, was brilliant today and the first few times he lined up on Llyod I was very nervous and he always has played well.

Thurstfield is very Silvagni like, might not be the tallest or strongest but he has very long arms and a great octopus style that will never make him a Dream Team/stat player but will make him a invaluable member of RFC.

Not everything is stats.

Have to agree with some of the posters here...

For the first time in a long time, our defence isn't our main issue.

McGuane plays well as a third defender, alongside Moore and Thursfield. Would like one more bigger body there to look after the brute FF's, but McGuane does his job, and he's got a big of mongrel about him, which I love to see out there.

He is a stick, but he is pretty tough and doesn't mind dishing out some punishment. At least he has a mean streak, something which we have been sincerely lacking.

Great effort today on Roughead and Franklin. Roughead didn't get a goal all day, and Franklin kicked a maximum of one on Luke. Franklin kicked only one goal in the last half and I can't recall if the switch with More had happened by then.
Outstanding performance by Luke today - Roughhead and Franklin never looked like getting on top of Luke

wasnt there a newspaper article today suggesting McGuane had very little pre season this year,so I'd imagine given a full pre season next year he should be even better

My favourite whipping boy ATM, Mitch Morton" put on a display. Excellent game. The tackle on Sewell late in the game was inspired stuff. Showed the difference between can't and won't beautifully.

Lace Out was very good indeed. His defence was top notch, his aggression, business as usual. But his use was, by his standards, freakish.

And Jacskon had a good game with the ball. And was one of the few to feed that peahearted goat, Poose Franklin, some lawn.

Yeah that Mitch tackle on Sewell was a ripper, as was lukey's big tackle on Buddy on the boudary when Buddy thought he was in the clear. Good that Wallace gave Luke a go at Buddy in the second half too.

I love the way that when someone plays a good game everyone jumps on and says "he's great". When he plays a bad game everyone jumps on and says "he's a dud".

Well, without sounding like a darksider I'll go out on a limb and say that McGuane is not a quality AFL player. Sure he did ok today and congrats to him but long term, to be a quality AFL team there's no room for Luke McGuane.

Why? He's poor by foot, doesn't always make the right decision, he's not a great mark. He's athletic, that's about all I see.

Sorry, not trying to be antagonistic, just telling it the way I see it.

Most teams don't have 22 guys with silky skills, they've got to rely on a few goers and mongrels. In a team like ours, which more and more is filled with fast break outside types it's nice to have a few Lukeys and Tucks

btw if you take a close look at Luke's kicking it's actually much improved in the last 12 months.

We all have our say about players depending on how they play that particular week. Funny thing is the selection committe pick who they think are the best for the job each week. They are the on field experts, we are only armchair experts. That's OK of course, and we are entitled to have our say about player's performances week in and week out. But we should not "bag" a player on one week. Not having a go at Tigertim, he is entitled to his opinion just like the rest of us.

IMHO, all played their part today, and I single out our young players in particular. They are like a breath of fresh air around the club

The credit to keeping Buddy in check this week goes to every back player and Richo. It was a great team effort. A great article in the Age today about how we turned the tables today, where in the past it has been the Richo-centric Tigers whereas ysterday it was the Buddy-centric Hawks.
