Richmonds not so short backline

agreed disco but this takes years at most clubs

dont forget we are talking about coming from a long way behind so a lot of catching up is reqd which is happening

the truth is TW should have cleaned it out year 1 but he had no currency to trade and would have had high picks, in hindsight we should have taken more chance with talls later on but we had pillars in richo and gaspar - the latter really dropped off and fell away

we have not had a genuine CHB or CHF in the last 10 years, thats the biggest problem, to add to this we had no skilled mids either......*smile* what a rabble

anyway we are slowly getting there, just not quick enough for any of us

Tango I would have agreed with you wholeheartedly this time last year. I even made a thread specifically trying to point out how the list was evolving in the right direction since Wallet arrived. However, last year's draft and this year's trading have convinced me that Richmond as a whole are embracing Wallet's vision of modern football and the idea of having a team full of midsized running players forsaking depth in talls and inside mids. I don't agree with this way of building a list at all.

just maybe we will get the CHB and CHF at 2 and 18 that TW needs......

i have a feeling we will?

Great discussion for both arguments, but what sticks out in my mind is watching an out of form Barry Hall throw our defenders around like rag dolls this year. Until we can find or develop defenders who can match up on players like Barry Hall we will always struggle in defence.

I think they'd have to take talls and possibly one inside mid with every pick in every draft they have left to even go close to restoring some sort of balance to the list. Even then you're using speculative picks to try and fill needs that really should have been addressed with decent picks like 19 and 35.

I’d actually be a fan a rookieing any 3 guys with a pulse above 195+, toss them in the Coburg two’s and see who emerges.

I’d also like to see us give one of JR, Srage and Hughes a sustained trial in the backlines. If they all want to stay on the list one has to be converted to a backman.

What a load of crap - Hunt's built like a brick $hithouse and crunches blokes all the time. Not much fear of Polo and Johnson doing that anytime soon and Rainsey whilst a goe'r is way outisde his weight division here.

yeah he's built like one but how often does he duck the head, watch the prelim final against collingwood and u will c wat i mean. ring triple m and ask the commentators on there about how soft josh hunt is, just cos he's strong doesnt mean he isnt soft. dont u know he appologised to his team mates for ducking his head. ive never seen polo, johnson or raisnes duck the head.

Barry Hall is a great example. He can't take an overhead mark to save his life. It doesn't matter if his opponent is 188cm or 198 cm, the extra height won't help a player beat him. Barry Hall is very good at three things: pushing opponents out of his way and marking the ball on his chest or out in front of his face, running into packs like an out of control semi-trailer and splitting it open to create opportunity for team-mates and winning the ball on the ground and out-muscling opponents with inferior strength.

Not hard to see why McGuane at 86kg didn't cope well with him. The problem was lack of strength, not lack of height. McGuane needs to add a few notches to the cable machine every time he plays with it in the gym if he is to go with this sort of player. His height is irrelevant.

Although now retired, Gehrig was another classic. A two-trick pony. Put a physically weaker player on him and he would wrestle with him in the goal-square all day. Put a stronger, slower player against him and he was off on his bike, running him around and around. Where exactly would a taller player have an advantage? The critical attributes that a defender needed to compete with Gehrig were pace and strength, height was irelevant.

Our backline is not so short when you compare it to geelong, its just a little lighter, but also a little younger
all bar bowden and johnson will be around for a long while and some will get taller and all will get heavier

scarlett 192/95 thursfeild 191/83
egan 196/101 polak 194/93
harley 193/95 mcganne 191/86
millburn 189/92 moore 189/86
enreight 187/91 bowden/188/91
hunt 185/100 polo 187/81 / johnson 187/90 / raines 184/81

I wouldnt be comparing Scarlett, Harley, Milburn and Egan to the likes of Moore, Polo, Bowden and McGuane.

Richmonds plight and crap list managementis summed up right there

Sad thig is that is almost our starting line up.

We need moore quality defenders instead of flankers.

Pick 2 Cotchin or Morton I dont care they will both be guns. 18 defender, 51 Ruck/defender, PSD1 Defender, Rookie 1,2,defender,rookie 3 Ruck

Total of 1 gun 4 defenders and 2 rucks

BRING IT MILLER!!!!!!

MILLER!!!!!

i think its a given nowadays that a genuine tall is classified as 190cm+. there are blokes who are taller than this and dont play as talls there are blokes who are shorter that have the ability to play as kpp in the mmain they are exceptions to the rule in both cases.
if you are 188 thru say 191 to play kp you in the main need strength shorter skinny types rarely if ever play kp except maybe when a coach clears the forward line out and plays a quick leading type one out. archer who is shorter than leo barry plays as a third tall croad at 190 but 97kg is a kp birchall at 193 93kg is a mid jacobs at 189 97kg plays third tall kp and goes alright. you 2 kpd should be of genuine height and size and strength your third tall option can be deficient in one of these areas if only 189 must strength must have a good leap and must have a hurt factor.

jon is both short and way to skinny to ever play kp at afl level. he will play as a tallish medium sized hbf maybe third tall option if his kicking can get to afl standard.he should also be capable of playing wing. these are where he played as a junior these are the positions his attributes and his body type suggest he will play.

we have just one player in polak who is of the right dimensions to play as a genuine kpd. polak atm is weak thru the hips and legs he is pushed out of contests far to easily so here we have a bloke who is the right height and size but lacks the neccesary strength. i would normally say fixable but graham has been in the system foe 6yrs and this has not improved one bit. also his kicking is terrible.
