Some interesting stats!

How often has Franklin been held to 2 or less marks in a game?
Answer: 17 times in 58 games.

How often has Richo been held to 2 or less marks in a game?
Answer 14 times in 258 games. 5.4% ( 7 times due to injury)

How many times was Wayne Carey held to 2 or less marks in a game?
Answer: 21 times in 272 games. 7.7%
Embarrassingly for Carey, 3 of these times came in his last 5 finals appearances, one in 2003 while playing with Adelaide, and twice in 2000 while at the peak of his powers with the Roos.
Glen Jackovich held him to 2 or less marks on 4 occasions.

Consider the strength of the Roos through this period relative to the strength of Richmond!

To further analyze Richo’s stats…………….

In detail:

1993 Round 13 Ess 141 v Rich 63
1993 Round 16 Adel 171 v Rich 32

1995 Round 9 Busted knee in opening minutes at SCG versus Sydney.

1996 Round 14 WC 68 v Rich 51.
Can you remember this game? Soaked MCG, WC ahead at half time decide to chip the ball around and bottle the game up denying us possession to win.

1996 Round 18 Bris 70 v Rich 53 wet game at Gabba

1997 Round 17 Adel 185 v Rich 48
Richo did ankle opening term at which stage he had 2 marks.

2001 Round 19 Bris 128 v 97

2002 Round 6 Adelaide,
did hamstring opening term with 2 marks and 2 goals to his name. Missed 3 games.

2002 Round 14 Versus Carlton in dummy spit game.

2002 Round 16 Versus Collingwood broke bone in arm, plus face injury! Managed to play the next week with a plate in his arm as only Richo would. Coll 89 v Rich 49

2004 Round 3 Injured opening term before registering a stat, missed 3 games.
2004 Round 14 v Carlton, Injured with 1 goal, 2 marks to his name and missed one week.

2005 Round 16 StK 106 v Rich 37
2005 Round 18 v Carlton, knocked out in first 10 minutes while trying to mark.

What does this prove?

Maybe i have too much time on my hands!

I reckon that proves that Richo is a better mark than the other two. I know which one I'd like at the tigers the most next year though.

The Franklin part of the comparrison really is largely irrelevant because he is simply a different style of footballer regardless of his frame.

Franklin plays more like a player thats around the 186 - 188cm mark and not as a power forward. When it comes to selecting the Allies team, i'd go Richo in, and tell Franklin to keep skirting around the bottom of the packs like he does at Hawthorn and if a few crumb come his way well and good, but don't be surprised if the takings are slim!

For those that don't remember Richo's last Allies appearance in 1996, Victoria won 20.17.137 v 11.18.84
Richo finished with 3 goals, 15 kicks, 12 marks and 2 handballs. Oh he also kicked 5 points! The Vics resorted to playing an extra man on him in the last term (Cory McKernan) standing in front of him to cut his space!

If Rich, Franklin and Reiwoldt all line up in the forward line, i hope they have fit goal umpires, because my guess is they'll be covering some ground. The Allies scoreline could look like a cricket score!

Of course marking is overrated - particularly contested marks inside the forward 50!

Nobody has ever doubted Richardson was a great mark, so was Stewie Loewe too..but neither were in the same ballpark as Carey so it's pointless.
My point is frick that the game is not solely about marking or Polak would be considered a champion.

Can't really put Franklin in this group, he has only played a few seasons.

Richo and Carey yes, you can line it up, but Richo has still kicked more goals than Carey and will finish his career in the top 10 goalkickers of all time. Considering the teams he has played in this is amazing.

Carey. Yes on field a champion no doubt, big, courageous, tough, matchwinner, leader.

OFFIELD. Dumb and Dumber. :hihi

Franklin. Very Very Exciting, who knows what he can achieve?

I think Buddy can eclipse Carey offield given time. That will really underline his brilliance.

Perhaps you could watch him play a few games. ;)

He's nimble, sure, but he can also take a very good mark on the lead. He's electric. Glad we have him.

Richo is the best contested mark to ever play the game.

Unfortunately football isn't only about marking. You need to use your foot.
