Sorry about this one folks, but whilst I think Walls is on the bag the Tigers bandwagon (and I'm convinced he only ever coached us as part of a Carlton ploy to ruin Richmond) he does raise some poignant issues.

Richo, Tigers in need of a change

The Age

Once again, Richmond and Matthew Richardson are on the brink. If team and player tail off further into mediocrity, it has to be time for some serious soul-searching. Two years ago, I was ridiculed for suggesting they part company. Today, I do it again.

For 10 seasons, Tony Lockett was the leading goalkicker at St Kilda, during which time his side reached the finals only twice. Two years after Lockett left, he played in his one and only grand final for the Swans.

A year after that, the Saints played in their first grand final in 26 years. Lockett's departure proved to be positive for both parties.

For 10 years, Paul Williams was one of Collingwood's best. But it let him go. Two-and-a-half seasons later, Williams has won two club best-and-fairest awards for the Swans. The Magpies, after a decade in the doldrums, profited, too. They nearly pinched a premiership last September, and are poised to have another crack at finals football in two months. Williams's departure was a win-win situation for player and club. And so it goes.

Recently, the Saints let big names in Barry Hall and Peter Everitt go. Both are playing really good football at their new clubs but, better still, Saints' supporters are experiencing a real air of excitement about their budding young team. Another win-win.

These examples should be noted by Richardson and the Richmond Football Club. Both, I suspect, would benefit from a parting of the ways.

The bottom line is that "Richo", in his 11th season, has played in only one final series for his beloved Tigers. Both player and club should be disappointed at the return the relationship has delivered.

I believe the reasons to go far outweigh the reasons to stay. And they are:

Limited team success

As stated - in Richo's time, the team has lost more games than it has won.

Comfort zone

Other than Wayne Campbell, none of the Richmond players would give him a "rocket" when deserved. A new group of team-mates to impress, led by a senior group who would chal-lenge the big fellow, could lift him to new heights.

Injuries

On average, six games a season have been missed because of injury.

Cost

He does not come cheap. Plenty of the folding stuff would be freed up if he left.

Trade bait

Although not the "hot" property he once was, the 28-year-old is still "warm". A couple of ordi-nary seasons would see other clubs go completely cold on him.

Coaching options

With Richo up forward, the Tigers are too one-dimensional with their forward strategies. The players feel compelled to kick it to him. With him gone, varied attacking ploys could be put into place.

Increased player responsibility

Some Tigers feel intimidated playing near the key forward. Without him, it would be a fresh start and a chance to take some ownership of an area that, for so long, has been dominated by one.

Increased team flexibility

Richo is limited in where he can play. He is a forward only, despite calls to play him in defence, in the ruck and midfield.

Media spotlight

The Richmond Football Club can do without the media scrutiny Richo brings upon himself. Will he or will he not chase, argue, lose concentration, show frustration, kick out of bounds, or give away free kicks?

To be his best

The main reason why Richo should leave Punt Road. If his career finished tomorrow, it would be a career that failed to deliver what it promised.

Richardson needs a new environment where his teammates have experienced more success than he has, where he is forced to toe the line to earn their respect. In this environment, he would be pressured to conform to the greater good of the team. This, in turn, would make him a better footballer.

And just where does Richo sit with the other key-marking forwards in the competition? A look at the results so far this year gives an insight.

Richo's career average is three goals a game. This season it is 1.8. His 46 per cent accuracy rating - the worst of the gun forwards - is hurting him badly. And Richo's strength, his ability to take a contested mark, is also his weakness.

Football is a changing game. Nowadays, players are instructed not to kick long to contest situations (Carlton excepted).

More and more, we see teams kicking short to maintain possession.

Richo under Tom Hafey in the '70s would have been a sensation.

Now, if Tiger coach Danny Frawley has his players kick long to Richo, as they did last Saturday night in Brisbane, the opposition will double-team the tall Tiger.

Mal Michael, Richo's opponent, was aided and abetted by Justin Leppitsch all night. It was too predictable and too easy for Brisbane to defend.

If Frawley wants Richo to time his leads, even dummy lead and block, gather ground ball and fire off handballs, then there are problems, too, as these skills do not come easily to the man who, while wearing yellow and black, would rather fly for "speccies".

Paul Salmon, in moving from Essendon to Hawthorn, was a win-win. And ditto for Mal Michael from Collingwood to Brisbane.

The time has come for Richmond and Richo to look at a win-win move - before it's too late.

And I must say I'd rather see Richo stay and become the player he could become with us, but as Walls says no one is gonna give him a spray other than Cambo.

I dont generally like Mr Walls, but i will have to agree with him on this one, after 11 seasons and no change in his "potential", I think its time we traded him, that will enable us to get some decent young talent before he isnt worth 5 cents.......

We proved earlier this year we can be a better focused team up forward without Richo.

Only problem is he just signed a new contract and isnt there a ruling now that you cant trade a player in the first year of a new term contract? Its the Heffernen (how ever its spelt) ruling.

I can't imagine the big fella anywhere else but Tigerland.

I might have imagined it but Richo looked to have the weight of the world on his shoulders at training the other night.

We all know what Richo's like.

What amazes me is that Danny holds a press conference saying the team is too Richo conscious. Why can't he manage to get the team to play the way he wants.

Why can't Richo be played in a position that suits him.

We all know on a night when Richo is being held in the goal square he won't have a good one, so why not change the situation.

To me it's a coaching defect to allow one player to have so much negative effect on the team particularly when that player has the ability Richo has.

I'm not sure Richo shoudl be copping all the flak on this one.

Why do coaches indulge him?

Yes Rosy, Richo has been indulged by every coach he has had. None have had a clue what to do with him.

I think Walls is right. It would be good for both parties. Imagine Richo trying to spit the dummy at West Coast right now. Wouldn't happen.

Those close losses to the Kangas and Blues, which have cost us a finals spot, are both fine examples of how the Richo conscious side will just bomb it away at crucial moments.

I know there coaches are trying to stop this, and that the players are ignoring game plans, but it seems the team itself is simply incapable of changing.

At Richmond he has been a wasted talent. And while we've still got talls in Stafford and Ottens, who we could surround with little guys, our forward line could still have bite without him in it.

Hate to say it, but I hope they trade him. It's last chance now to pick up some good kids or picks - he won't be worth anything after another year with us.

The richmond circus don't have the balls to get rid of him so expect cry baby richo to be a tiger next year.

i'm glad that my dislike for that wanker has finally been justified.
at least when Shaw suggested trading him he came up with some negatives.
I'll provide one: if the tigers trade richo than luke-warm supporters and members will most likely jump off the richmond bandwagon.
so go ahead and trade him rfc and watch me and my fellow half-assed mates start following rugby.

I agree 100% I'd be extremely peeved if the tigers hung Richo out to dry. Richmond is a far more exciting team to follow with Richo IMO. I'm happy to take the punt that he will shake the massive load off his shoulder and prove all the critics wrong.

Look i love the big fella, always have, always will, but we need a change!!!!

This team will go nowhere with what we have atm, its time for change...

Richo will still get us a decent player and/or early draft pick and IMHO thats a win for us and for Richo.

Those who would abandon the club just because we let Richo go are a disgrace, not true supporters and just stupid really!!

Time for a shake up, and it will start with Richo.

Yeah but how much credibility does Robert Walls have? After all, hasn't he been saying for years now that Richo will one day kick 15 goals. Definitely on the band wagon. Must have been copping too much of a ribbing from Mike Sheehan and Gerard Healy.

Walls + worst disease to ever infect the club.
But he's right that Richo has to go. He can't kick....therefore useless.

Also trade bowden; pettifer , hilton and fiora. Richmond have invested far too much in Coburgs favour.

Certainly not............he gave his all and played pretty smart. They wont trade him.

Try Buck Rogers for a start, he missed 2 gettable goals that needed to be kicked = hopeless.

I wasn't one for bagging him, but based on that, along with Bidders, King, he needs to go.

Julz would you agree Richo had an ordinary first quarter and only improved when moved up the ground in the 2nd quarter?
I think Mike Sheehans theory was strogly supported by Richo's game tonight.

One of Rogos misses was from a pass that Richardson could easily have kept running in and had a shot with himself. Was it unselfish play or lack of confidence?
Richo missed a couple he should have kicked too.

Where were all WALLSY's ideas when he was Coach.

Richo is far better playing up the ground where he can run. I still rember a few years ago the Talking Footy crew rated him as the MVP in the competition (at that time) and he was playing in the CHF role with licence to roam.

Maybe we can run a strategic campaign with the Journo's to get Danny to adopt a few of our ideas.

Any influential Journo's out there???
