Richo - where to play him in 2009?

If you want him at HFF to "run everywhere" then he's pretty much going to bump into whoever's playing wing on that side of the ground.

If you think putting Richo at HFF will allow us to play an extra kid on a wing, you're wrong. You can start him on a HFF but he's essentially playing the role of a wingman anyway, so whoever is listed to start there might as well drift forward... kind of pointless.

Who else in the competition has a 196cm wingman who runs all day and is as strong as an Ox.Let him roam wherever he wants to.

An absolute nightmare to match up on for the opposition!!

Absolutely! Play him the same as last year, rampaging around the wing, sneaking forward when he needs a rest or thinks someone might challenge his Titus medal status. Drifting down back to fill a hole when we're under the pump.
Big Richoman can do whatever the *smile* he likes out there, he's earned it.

hmm cotchin deledio at pace and delivering or icho at pace delivering the ball give me the former anyday.

unfortunately for me we dont have any kpfs if we did i would not play richo at all. l know this comment will raise peoples hackles but ive thought it for yrs.

to me the real option for richo is as a sacrificial lamb where he stays at home and forces the opposition to double team himthe trouble with this plan is you have to have someone who can cause a lot of damage when freed up. you also have to have footballers smart enough to play to the plan.in reality it should be richo whos fighting of 2 defenders not jack riewoldt.

the wings and hbf is an area where we develop our younger players. one hbf for a kid and one wing for a kid.for me cotchin gets a wing collins and edwards should also play there. ive left the hbf for tambling not so young but its where he needs /must play.

for me im jumping on andy collins bandwagon this yr hes my smokie. i think ac/dc daniel connors will be the high point of 2009.

the one i would really like to see prove himself is hislop i reckon hes got genuine mongrel in him and sheesh we could do with a few skillful mongrels.

Strange that some continue to embrace the strategies employed by Frawley.....

Nearly won a brownlow playing midfield and allowed greater improvement for the team (performance and structure) in 08. No brainer imo.

Richo is now a Brownlow Medal quality midfield player. He's the most respected, loved and inspirational Richmond player maybe in history. To drop him for an Andy Collins is a very foolish idea... sometimes you can follow a set of plans/processes so blindly and without question that you'll do yourself more irreparable damage than good.

We must question all decisions and explore all doubts, but not blindly sticking to a self created "law of business" that we operate under without flexibility.

Even the strictest of laws in society have exemptions under the right circumstances.

A "No tolerance" approach is a lazy approach.

HFF and ideally getting the ball on the boundary line on the 50m line. Kicks more goals from there IMO. ;)

i should have said ideally richo has demonstated his whole career hes incapable of playing to a teams plan hence they have found a position for him on the wing. as i said leave the wing for the good kicks and kids richo on a hff flank is the only option. as i said it was in this role he kicked 91 goals.

He kicked 48 last year from the wing. He fit the position like a glove and nearly won a Brownlow medal yet you want to move him back up forward again??? :confused

Heck play another small out on his wing as well. Just let Richo run free.
I think he's a real weapon out in the open space whilst pushing forward.

My only regret is it didn't happen long before now.

Play him as last year...

Who would Ratten play on him for example??

Setanta?
Stevens?
Gibbs?
Thornton?

He would outrun, outmark any and all of those guys...

Unfortunately there is merit in both styles. So perhaps a little fusion cooking is required.

Let him run about for half a quarter so he gets into the game and then consciously anchor him in the square. For me the issue has always been that he tries (often successfully - who can forget the red face on Brennan as he spent four quarters always two steps behind) to blow his defender up as a means of getting on top so the emphasis is on long and repeated leads to poor positions.

I think when he is up forward that he should be trying for quite short leads from deep in the foreward line and a real attempt to bring the ball to ground and advantage if he is man on man - becuse lets face it, some of the defenders out there aren't slack on the 1on1 spoil. I remember when Richo broke his hand and when he did his knee. He stopped trying to mark every ball in the forward line and just kept trying to be the target and feed his small fowards.

The trick here is that we should be aware that we are playing two very different styles and two configurations and train to it. Often its the chopping and changing of styles that actually gets the results as opposition teams fail to adapt quickly enough, not the styles of play themselves that have any special merit on a given day.

I think it will simply come down to how we go with our young key forwards

I would leave him on the wing even if Jack or Cleve don't step up.

Try Rance, Vickery, Putt, Post even Schulz there before Richo again... he changs the whole dynamics of the forwardline too much to play there consistently.

Agree......he can still drift down a chip in for a goal or two when playing on the wing.

I can see merit in keeping the half back area for player development, but I would be happy if Wallace used Richo in a sweeping role if it was required on game day e.g if Schulz wasn't working out.
I thought the Big Man was reliable when he went back there in 08 and looked a bit like a Benny Gale or Shaun Rehn when they filled that role.
