With the SA double-header half done, I thought it would interesting to have a look at some stats by ground. This is for the 157 games from 2000-2006 (includes finals). These numbers won't really tell you anything you don't already know:
1. Interstate record shocking - 27.3% win/loss ratio; for against % is 75.8%
2. Record at VIC grounds markedly better (45.2%), but still obviously poor
3. Football Park and Subiaco records combine for a miserly 3 wins from 19 starts, with only a 10% return at FP
4. MCG is our preferred VIC hunting ground over Docklands and the Cattery
5. 21% of games played interstate
6. Should we be requesting a relocation to Perth to be based at the WACA?!

GroundGames% won
WACA1100.0%
SCG450.0%
MCG7647.4%
Gabba742.9%
Docklands4542.2%
Kardinia Park333.3%

Football Park1010.0%

Yes, the strongest opposition since 2000 have been the Lions, Swans, Port and the Eagles which would contribute to the way the results have fallen. However, the figures do reinforce that to be a consistent finals competitor in this new world order, we need to grasp the national concept and playing on the road. We are not even close currently. We need to seriously review the way we approach roadtrips and work out where we are losing it in terms of preparation, the mental side, "acclimatisation" (if there is such a thing when we're mainly talking about an hour plane ride), diet, support staff, accommodation, familiarisation with facilities, etc.

For crying out loud, it's only Adelaide and Perth, it's not like they're on the equator or in the Antartic Circle or that they don't speak the same language...C'mon Tiges, demystify playing interstate once and for all, both on and off the field!

I think it's more an emphasis on how crap we've been and how good the interstate teams have been.
It's also a good indicator I reckon on how close teams are. When you see a team and everyone enjoys being together, generally they get a decent percentage away.

Our past double roadtrips:

1993 Adelaide & Brisbane, 9 days break, lost both
1994 Brisbane & Perth, 7, won/lost
2000 Sydney & Perth, 8, lost/won
2002 Adelaide & Sydney, 6, lost both
2003 Brisbane & Adelaide, 7, lost both
2004 Adelaide & Perth, 7, lost both
2006 Perth & Brisbane, 7, lost/won
2007 Adelaide & Adelaide, 6, lost/?

Be interesting to compare Collingwood's for the same period.

2000-present, 'away' games only e.g. Melbourne's home games in Brisbane are not included.

The most recent of Collingwood's two double roadtrips was in 1994. Carlton have had two also, the last in 1996 (which was a pair of finals matches - not scheduled in advance). Essendon have had 4, of which one was a pair of finals.

The question in my mind is, how important is the home ground advantage to a teams confidence levels?

My thinkin is that with a significant home ground advantage(that the Vic teams do not have very often), you are all but gauranteed some wins....which will build morale and confidence, which should help in future games.....which builds morale and confidence which....etc.

So is that partly why the interstate sides are better?
