Rookie list elevation

terry and greg know what they are doing they never get anything wrong im sure they will pick the right time to elevate howat. sheesh all this conjecture its just not good.

I'm wondering about poor old Craigy.
In past years he's agreed with everything Clawy has said. Now he's just confused. :spin

Noticed on the club's website in the article on the leadership group that Howat is now part of the junior leadership group. This was voted on by the playing group, not the coaching staff, but surely an endorsment such as this shows the way he is viewed by those within the club.

Howat is next on.
It's just if they put him on now it will cost more than if they put him on just before the round 1 game vs Carlton.

Isn't Peterson being placed on the long term injury list and being replaced by Howat? If so, then King can come on to the list for Cogs. If Peterson makes it back during the year, the issue will then arise as to which one goes back on to rookie list.

I didn't think there was a choice there - if a senior player comes back from injury, the player elevated to replace him had to go back on the rookie list.

why?

I think the players get paid during the pre-season, and not just the games they play.
The pay is higher for a player on the actual list, than a rookie player.
I don't think we are talking tens of thousands of dollars here, more like around $500 per week.

He will be upgraded to a basic contract for the period that he is on the list. A rookie contract is less than a basic contract. Players on basic contracts are paid extra again for each game that they play.

The financial aspect is just one side of why there hasn't been an upgrade yet. The simpler reason is that there is no need to upgrade a player until the season starts. Rookies can play in the NAB Cup anyway so why the hurry?

There is still 5 weeks to go before Coughlan needs to be replaced. Howat could yet go down with injury himself during that time or simply have a complete loss of form. Meanwhile, although unlikely, another rookie could be best on ground in every practice match between now and the start of the season and make a compelling case for upgrade instead.

Howat will get the nod, in all likelihood, and will play in round 1-all things remaining the same for the next five weeks.

just fantastic harry and this is no criticism but how many more would there have been if we utilised the full list. i know greg has been trying very hard for the last six yrs to totally utilise the list. ;)
and once again without sounding to critical. we have had 1 player come thru this system that has given us long term service or managed to stay on the list in his case. that being greg tivendale. in 10 yrs of the rookie system.

I think Sydeny (intended) has 8 rookies, comes down to money and AFL incentives doesn't it, I think WC has 6.

Most Vic clubs have 4? except Carlscum (5) I think?

Hawks 3 (still no pic updates on their website).

Magots 4. (still no pic updates on their website).

Roos 5! (still no pic updates on their website).

Melb 4.

Dogs 4. (still no pic updates on their website).

St Kilda 6.

Roos are surprising, although they probably don't have great salary cap problems other than their two ex-Hawks... ?
