Do you think all of those players are better options than Jacko at this stage?

Jackson has had an interrupted pre-season. He hasn't played in any practice games.

He is clearly in our best 22.

having depth is a double edged sword, too much choice! plus we don't see everything the club does. i'd like to see a couple of new faces in there come round 1. Miles looks good, as do a couple of others. if he is fit you don't leave Jackson out. Nor Jack. Knights was great before his knee went. Hampson has to play.
the definite starters for me are:
rance, morris, vlast, vick, houli, cotch, lids, dusty, conca, king, hampson, jackson, jack, miles, ellis, knights, edwards, grigg, chaplin.

possibles: petterd, lloyd, foley, griff, banfield?, thomas, arnot, astbury, McD, gordon?

Rosie you can't carry an injured midfielder against Ablett and co.
He miss's round1 and comes back ready to go against the Blues.

Rosy

With all due respect to Zip I'll field that question.
I'd prefer Jacko as he is today than a couple of guys in Zips team, despite the fact he hasn't had any game time in the pre-season. Jacko is a class act and his experience goes someway to counteracting his lack of match practice. But if we send him out against Gold Coast without match practice he could do an injury, possibly to the same area of his body that has kept him out of the previous practice matches.
Match fitness is an important layer of conditioning for a player.

With our new depth we can afford to be considerate of our playing personnel. Petterd or McDonough for example both have recent match practice so why not get them to try to do Jacko's job. He's obviously not right or he would have been playing.
Did Jacko even play at Punt Road yesterday?

The tigers and the Suns Have some interesting selection synergy.
Ablett has not played since the Essendon challenge game and his likely opponent Jacko hasn't played at all.
Full back Thompson hasn't played at all, neither has his likely opponent in Jack Riewoldt.

I don't think we should be risking any players who may be under an injury cloud - that includes Riewoldt/Jackson, anyone.

If they are right, then no worries.

GC is a big danger game for us considering past history and being round 1 and all.

That's well and good DDT but my question to zipper was specifically in response to him asking what was the matter with Jacko, as though he didn't have any details, then not including him in his best line-up. I was just interested to know whether he thought they were better options than Jacko or whether he was assuming Jacko wasn't fit. I wouldn't have a clue about Jacko's preparation in regard to Rd 1. Happy to see what happens at the selection table. Not long to wait now. I hope we don't risk selecting any player who isn't fit enough to play.

Ablett has apparently been injured and missed practice time too. I agree with you in theory but I don't know if Dan is injured enough not to play. I guess we'll soon know.

One of the main reasons for our recruiting of mature agers the last couple years is to address issues of depth.

No point risking players under a cloud now that someone else will have a decent enough ability to replace them.

We really need to start the season off with a win to get the morale up before we avenge our finals exit from 2013 against Carlton in R2.

Rory Thompson a likely out for the Suns which will help. Ablett carrying a niggle so if Jacko can get a gig this week he'll have played just as much as Gaz.

Yep, that will go very close I'd say. Maybe Edwards, Lloyd or Foley in for Knights - and thats about it.

He didn't get much of the ball in the practice match yesterday, but the touches he did have, hit targets, and looked classy. Fitness may be a concern though.

Expect a good contested effort against the Bombers for our next practice match.

There are players who will be vying for a round 1 spot and they won't want to disappoint.

After this game we will be able to better guess the make up of our round 1 team.

Given todays events - reckon Fridays practice match will be a non event.

Surprised Collingwood ran down THe Suns in today's heat.
I wonder if McKenna called his stars to the bench happy in the knowledge the Suns smashed it.

Yep - McKenna only had a 2nd string mid-field running around in the 2nd half. Metricon will not be an easy venue for any visiting teams in 2014. Just hope for the 4 points in R1, any way we can get them. R1 can be such a momentum builder so is vital we bring them home before facing the foe in R2
