30th August 1998, 76,387 supporters crammed in the MCG to see the Tigers hopefully win and have a piece of September action.

Unfortunately, our pants were pulled down and we were crushed by 76 points, ending our season and putting us out of the 8 on percentage behind the bummers.

Since then in regular home and away season matches, Tigers and Demons have played 13 times, with us holding a very slender 7 wins and 6 losses.

The damning statistic is that we have lost the last three, all by 50 points or more.

If last week was a 8 point game, then this week is most definately a 12 point game.

We win, we go to 36 points. On the basis Collingwood beat Fremantle, they remain on 28 (a two game buffer)

Port and Geelong play each other, with the winner going to 28 points aswell.

With a poor percentage, we need to keep winning. With 3rd - 8th being separated by 2 games if we win this weekend and for example one of or both of St Kilda and Sydney lose we can go to as high as 6th.

I think this is our most crucial game in some time. With a tough next few against Sydney, St Kilda and Bulldogs, it really is crunch time. hopefully we would then beat Brisbane, Carlton and Essendon (but as we saw last year against the blues and this year against the hawks, we break hearts)

I would hate the last game against the eagles to determine if we will play Finals Football.

WE NEED TO WIN PERIOD........

On another note, I detest Melbourne supporters after the 'Sledging of Nathan Brown Incident' after he was injured.

COME ON TIGERS..................................ALL OR NOTHING

I remember that game. Was a Dees home game and they had pom pom girls and I think a cavalcade. Always been suss of cavalcades and one of my most disappointing moments is how we were flogged in the Dyer/Richards cup after Jack did a lap of honour.

I don't mind Melbourne supporters. I find them pretty inoffensive. I'd no sooner tar them all with the same brush as a couple of loud mouthed yobbos as I would tar Richmond supporters as spitters cos of one idiots actions.

I like Melbourne's song but not enough to hear it after the game.

Tiges by 25. Eat 'em Alive. Oh we're from Tigerland..........

I got so hammered during and after that game.

As soon as Farmer took the speccie I had a bad feeling.

If we'd won we would have finished 5th and if the 'real Richmond' turned up in the finals done a bit of damage.

Great post Mack.

That game has always been burned in my memory against the dees. Long after the game we were upstairs at the social club conmiserating and Knighter had been in there as well looking very disconsolate. It was around 7:30 - 8:00 long after any other player had left and we watched him pick his bag up and sling it over his shoulder and walk down the long corridor to the stairs leading outside.

You could see he was shattered. Season over just like that.

Anyone that doesn't believe Matty bled (literally sometimes) for the club needs a good kicking.

Smash em Tiges!

Felt nearly straight away the Dees were on when Lyon kicked a goal in opening minutes and was pumped and our heads were already downcast. We went into game top heavy and too many underdone players like Richo, Holland, Plapp.

LOL what ever happened to justin Plapp, I know he went to St. Kilda but after that he kinda just disappeared. He was a cult hero.

The 'Jeffrey Farmer' game -

Biggest crowd for a Tigers-Dees match - bigger than the 1940-GF (70,330).

Only a handful of other games between the clubs have topped 45,000:
  • 54,763 for the 1940 SF
  • 51,000 for a HA game in 1951
  • 48,708 also watched a match in 1971 - but the other 'biggest' crowds were:

  • the other h&a game in 1998 (Rd.7 - 46,217 - Tigers won that by 7 goals) and
  • the 2 1999 h&a games (Rd.1 - 47,620 - we lost by 17)(Rd.16 - 44,898 - we won by 25)

In the 10 games since the crowd has averaged in the high 30's ...

*Last years TD match was the first time the two clubs had met anywhere but the G since their last match together at Punt Road in 1963 - except for a 1990 game at Waverley Park that drew just 15,000 -!

I remember that game in Round 22 '98 - one of the worst days I've ever had at the football. It was also the start of a phase in which almost every time Melbourne played a home game against us they would make up some ridiculous excuse to create a big fanfare before the game. That day was their 140th anniversary or something like that and the whole crowd were invited to sing the Melbourne theme song (several times over) right before the start of the match - what a pharce. Then the very next game we had in Round 1 '99 was against Melbourne at the 'G and again there was some great hoo-ha before the game - I think it was something to do with Jim Stynes this time. Then a few years later they played us on a Friday night and they had all these ex-Melbourne "legends" out on the ground beforehand - not for any particular reason but just because Neale Daniher felt like it. I remember thinking we should use any filmsy excuse we could come up with to do it back to them but unfortunately it hasn't happened (so far).

So yes, it's payback time...for all of that, for the human garbage who were sledging Browny after he broke his leg, and finally just for being Melbourne!   :hihi

1996 - lost to the roos round 22...we had 'em...but we still let 'em win
1994 - going great..to miss the finals we literally had to get thrashed in our last two games. And we were.

:help

After finishing at St Kilda he went to Port Adelaide SANFL (incidentally playing under Matty Knights).

From there went to Tassie in VFL for past few years &  is captain this year, he done his knee 2 weeks ago & will miss remainder of season.

My dees supporting girlfriend and I have been going out two years...

We go to all Tiges v Dees games...

So far, it would be fair to say, I have been copping the raw end of the prawn.

It's time to turn the tables.

Hopefully she'll be copping it tomorrow night. Im rootin' for ya!

Jack Dyer hated Melbourne more than any other club. He had a great anecdote about them running onto the field and their captain saying (in a posh voice) "now you you gew over thare, and you gew over thare" Then Jack says something to the effect that "I'll send you somewhere alright!" Theres more to it than that but it loses it in translation; It needs the Captains voice

Yeah, as Leon Daphe said after the match they shoved our heads down the toilet. It will be a big old night in Moe tonight (me and Shane will make sure of it) if the lads can thump this wannabe merger club.

Eat 'em alive Tigers
