Round 22 - 2008 - Losers Paradise

The Saints seem to have benefited from tanking on successive years with the raft of stars they gained.

Compare that to the Kangas, a dud list with no tanking that went nowhere in 2007 as a result.

These examples have confirmed it for me, lets tank for the next 10 years to build a dynasty the league will fear!

Many times you get what you wish for. Regardless of what happened this year, we need to aim for excellent week by week performances and a position in the top 8. What's the point of playing unless you're trying to achieve as much as you can?

Acceptance of mediocrity needs to go out the window and professionalism and pride in performance has to become the norm and not the occasional surprise. Our list is not fantastic, but it’s not useless either. Time for our players and coaches to strive to be the best they can be.

Tough call. Head says that 16th would be a lot better than 9th, yet the heart says win every game possible even if it means ninth.

I guess a lot comes down to whether we have faith in our management to either a) work with the list we have to build a solid team or b) be able to spot the young guns and use our priority picks to ensure we become a gun side.

Unfortunately I am not 100% confident that our mgmt can do either.

I'll tell you what winning equals....let me rattle off a few names....Hird......Voss.....Buckley...yes Buckley.....Ablett Jr...Bartel....Goodes...Hall.....Judd...Cousins...Kerr...Bartlett...Wiley..Cloke....blah blah....let me tell you about Richmond for the last 25 years.............oh, you can tell yourselves.....

How many of those players were as a result of tanking?
Hird was pick 79 for a start.
That wouldn't have helped if we finished last.

There was a v good article a while back analyzing fact vs myth as to what players from each individual draft would have gone in hindsight.
Some of this info I got from OER.

Deledio(1) for example was rated at 6 from the 2004 draft.

Tambling(4) probably wouldn't be in the top 20 on what we've seen to date.

Meyer(12) may not have even been drafted.

On the other hand Wil Thursfield(r) may well have gone first round and likewise Foley(r) was rated at dp4.

Franklin(5) and Travis Cloke(FS) were rated 1 & 2 respectively. Hard to argue with that.

High draft picks do not guarantee success and tanking most certainly doesn't.

In saying that trading them off doesn't help either.

Cousins should be eligible to enter the PSD this year. This means that there will be no talk about teams tanking to get him next year and, secondly, that if a club is willing to invest in him this year in the knowledge that he won't play for 12 months or possibly ever, it rewards that club for the risk of the investment if he does come back next year. It also ensures that Cousins will be be able to enjoy the fruits of the player welfare networks that the AFL clubs have in place, rather than being left to fend for himself. Finally, it allows Cousins to spend the 12 months playing for the particular AFL club's affiliate state league club if and when he is ready.

BTW, are we certain that he isn't allowed to nominate for this year's PSD? Was his penalty a ban from being a registered AFL player for 12 months or a suspension from playing an AFL game for 12 months?

He can play for a VFL side but not an AFL side in the VFL.

Coburg is okay, Collingwood is not.

You would imagine though he will go back to his home club of East Freo though.

Answered my own question. From Mike Fitzpatrick:

“The Commission has determined that … Mr Cousins entitlement to be a player in the AFL competition or to be eligible to be drafted onto or included on a club’s list is suspended for 12 months from this day.”

The opportunity for the tigers to attain #1 #2 and PSD 1 in 08 should the season unravel will have the tanking debate well and truly all over the media.

As far as the AFL are concerned Tanking does not exist in any format in the game according to Dumbmetriou. I hope we are not in that position but should we get questioned we should just say

... "tanking" not on your life ... we are just following the Carlton game plan that is endorsed by the AFL!

sheesh and around and around and around we go. stop it you fools im getting bloody dizzy.

Only if we finish at the tail of the ladder, if we rebound well it becomes a big non-issue (heres hoping)

I wouldn't believe those ranking Toohey's, they were simply Mark Robinson's opinion as published in the HUN.
