Round 4 Game day v bri$vega$

Sorry people I'm late to the (non) party. Does anyone who was at the ground know what the free against Brown to Bailey, 80m off the ball, for an easy goal was for? The commentators have no idea, no replay.
We saw footage on TV. There was pushing and shoving between Bailey & Brown. Bailey went to ground. Commentators seemed to think he went down pretty easily…

Margin flattered us but at least we competed for the full game. Lot of positives in ball movement & intent to score. The draftees are excellent, just need more of them, especially in the middle. Lalor is a star. Trainor is a 200 gamer.

Varying levels of improvement elsewhere - Campbell (rapidly getting towards A grade quality), Miller & Banks.

Lynch is interesting - clearly slower & less athletic than at his peak & cannot get off the ground at all. Will this improve as the season goes on? Worth another season?

Haven’t read the whole thread on the game as I was at the game so apologies if this has been discussed already. Just want to comment on the security measures today getting in and what was everyone else’s experience. Got there at 2.30 to find that the gates didn’t open until 3. I thought that was unusual since they are normally opened at least a couple of hours before the game , not just over an hour before. They announced that EVERY bag would be searched. Didn’t have a problem with that. I was about 5 metres from the entry. I noticed that only ONE body scanner was open to walk through (was 2 but joined together), the other 3 weren’t manned or opened. Everyone was funneled through this one entrance. By the time the gates opened, I looked around to see that behind me were 2 lines at least 100 metres long. I thought to myself that they are going to miss the first bounce. It took me 10 minutes to get through to the body scanner. And as I predicted I got diverted to get my bag checked. I found that there was only ONE table for the bag checks, and one security guy doing the metal detector wand for EVERYONE entering. I mean wtf! I’m glad security was more thorough and had no issue getting searched etc but why the *smile* did they have LESS security personnel at the entrances to allow people in? I know they weren’t expecting a huge crowd (over 42,000 I believe turned up), but will this be the same for bigger games? If so then there’s no point turning up. The gates don’t open to give patrons enough time to be searched and the anger of missing a big chunk of the game will get people’s blood boiling. Also, I didn’t notice any security during the game like I normally do. What’s going on?
Did anyone who went miss seeing any of the game because of waiting to get in?

I dunno. If we had got a bit close a bit sooner they probably would have just found another gear, but they were gifted 2 or 3 soft goals off the umps. I know thats nothing unusual, but still.

And yes, currently, give Tommy another year, and a primo carpark.

I was also at gate 3 just before 3 , ridiculous situation. The mcc being there usual cheap skates.
Been going on for years. Remember some monster queues in the 80s at cricket matches due to them not opening enough gates.
Interestingly i was picked to go through the line for extra checking even though i didn't have a bag(think my scanner went beeped). Just walked past it and the guy with the hand scanner let me through without checking..

Hard watching Cotch up at the box when the camera goes to him.
The only that can be said is he is getting excellent experience there any further role in football. Whatever and wherever that may be.

It was because of the two idiots who got caught with guns in the ground on Thursday night.

I was a bit late getting to the ground. Probably got to the gates around 4pm. Usually go in gate 3 but the lines were enormous. Went to gate 4 and the line was much shorter. Reckon I was inside the ground in 3 minutes. And they didn’t even scan me with the wand which they were doing to others. But I suppose the machine I walked through at start of the line showed nothing worth an extra check?

You are correct that he would be better in a very good team but that ain't us. I get frustrated with people bagging Hopper and Taranto when they give 100% every week. Sure they have limitations but they aren't going to suddenly become speedy and every player can't be Dusty. Our list is in bad shape, that's why we are rebuilding. That's on Dimma and the brains trust, we now have a plan to build into a team with a premiership window but it will take time. We will get smashed at times, that's ok - all we can ask right now is that a) the kids get better and b) the others wotk their asses off. If we come last - yay, we can get Cooper Duff-Tytler who is a 200cm freak of a player with mongrel. It is not productive to bag our boys when they have a crack but fall short. Saying "get rid of Hopper" etc. because they make a mistake while they bust their gut for the guernsey doesn't sit well with me. It's round 4. Anyway, rant over, let's focus on the games of Trainor and Lalor, soon it will also be Smillie, then Sims and Faull, then my favourite of all the draftees, Hotton. Add Alger and see what's next, I suspect there are better times ahead.
Good post, Judge. Yes, l try not to bag any player representing my team these days for two reasons:
1. They are good enough to make AFL which I certainly wasn't and
2. They are putting their heads and bodies on the line in a fierce physical sport risking 'head and shin.' l'm not!
Sure I will criticize some efforts or errors out of frustration but I draw the line at totally rubbishing one of our players. I don't admire posters who continually savage a player.
Can't see how it helps anything. Dow is an obvious example. Yes, he frustrates me too and is probably not going to be good enough ultimately. But I've seen some little improvements and gutsy efforts that maybe haven't quite come off. Even his stronger body shape.

However, l remember times when Shane Edwards and even JR8 frustrated too. It takes several years like 4/5 for some guys to reach their potential.

You're not factoring in they kicked some flukey ones too from 50m out on the boundary and Ashcroft's dribbler that Hopper should have prevented.

I had no problems getting into the ground itself.
I arrived late (by my standards) at about 3.40.
Plan was to get there early for a few drinks with my buddy.

My prob was I assumed the trains were running.
Incorrect.
Glen Waverley Line out of action.
Had to bus it in.
Having a bus replicate the train route to the city is an abomination.
Left, Right, Left, Right. Left, Right, you get the gist.
Happy to never drink again and drive in.
Feels like you are in a foreign country and the taxi driver is taking you via the longest route possible to maximise the fare.
Was so frustrating.
Don't know why they didn't run some footy specials to Burnley especially when 95 percent of the travellers where footy bound.
Can't do that, too logical.
Then rinse and repeat to come back.
Left at the final siren and got home at 9.15 pm.

The game itself was pretty good.
We appeared half interested today, which always helps.
Some good signs, we just go through some shocking patches where oppo scores at will.
Then we tighten up again.
Liked Seth, Lalor, Trainor, Trezise and good to see Armstrong bob up for a couple of snags.
Def some green shoots there.
Hope they can jag a win soon, before the young 'uns maybe drop their bundle.
Always good for their beliefs to see their efforts rewarded with a win.

Nothing beats footy at the G.
Keep going, Tiges.

Didn't you see it? It was obvious. Brown, and I suppose he is lucky he didn't give away 50m, but Brown, he was, well, he was . . . wearing a Richmond jumper . And people wonder why he gave away a free, the temerity of Brown, to appear on an AFL ground in a Richmond jumper, what does he expect, free kick every time. I remember looking at the score board and commenting that we wouldn't see a replay and, lo and behold, no replay. Of course they had footage with the number of cameras at the ground, they just choose not to show crap decisions by incompetent umps.

Enough of that.

What I saw today was last year's wooden spooner playing last year's Premiers.

We were outclassed, simple as that.

I also saw some damned good play by our young players. Lalor was impressive, he really is very good already. Blight showed good signs. Armstrong kicked a few. We have some real prospects coming through.

Miller was solid, I have had many doubts about Miller, but if we could stop the ball coming in so easily he will be a very good defender.

I agree Broad looked a bit at sea at times, but I've noticed of late Broad getting outmarked by players who have a fair height advantage. I think he often gets the wrong match ups, hard to spoil when the opponent is a few inches taller and has the ball delivered to his advantage.

What I also saw today was more support on the outside at times. Yeah, it wasn't every time like you see with a team like Brisbane who just won a flag, but there were times when our players had a running outlet, had players up the ground working to find space. This sounds more like the game plan I glean from the training reports. When they can do it, there is a plan there. Young team, will take time, but much better signs this week.

They have form for this. Ashcroft took a dive after a mark and got 50. Umpires have to be better than that.

Two things can be true. There is no doubt Brisbane coasted in a game they were never going to lose, just firing the afterburners long enough when they needed to to put the game to bed. We saw our dynasty team have many similar games. It's a long season; they got a comfortable win without taxing themselves.

But there were also many promising signs for us. Laceout Sammy Lalor is some kind of decision-making and ball use savant. Immaculate by hand and foot; the most efficient delivery to the most effective target. Mature beyond his years: he truly does seem to have Trent Cotchin's head on Dustin Martin's shoulders.

Super Seth Campbell has all the tools to be a very good player for a long time and has the pace, skill and running ability we sorely need. Luke Trainor looks a lock for 200 games. Tom Brown can rip holes through zones. He has leveled up from last year and with five more disposals a game will level up again. Steely Green had his best game and used the ball nicely. We moved the ball brilliantly at times.

Sonsie aside, our duds are giving what they can (and maybe he is too. Maybe that's all he's capable of).

Armstrong has an admirably-chiseled jib. And he was our third-most exciting young tall forward on the day for anyone who watched the twos. Banks was pretty good coming off the concussion. I think he's the fourth of our 2021 five but he's showing signs he could make it as a hard-running wing or HBF.

Trezise and Smith are goers worth persisting with.

Miller looks at the level. Miller!

And we have Balta, Gibcus, Lefau, Clarke, Smillie, Hotton, Faull, Sims, Alger, McAuliffe, Gray and Ryan to come in at various points. And two-top five picks, plus a father-son looking good. (And another one next year, and finally an NGA kid.)

My brother took his kids and reported, "Very relaxing loss". I replied, "They all are this year, bruz."

For a team coming off a two-win season and looking at another lowly finish, we are in a remarkably positive position as a club. We are miles ahead of rabble like Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne, West Coast and Norf.

This is going to be a fun ride.

If and when we do reach that premiership window there will be guys getting games now that won’t be there , and maybe some that we at times think aren’t quite up to it now, that perhaps will be there .

Dimmas early years , think nason, nahas , king , as a few in the former group and macintosh ellis in the latter .

Stop taking bags and the lines will move much quicker
What other sport do people take picnics with them?
Ban 🎒 🛍

Yet the commentators were quick to say “oh you can’t be giving away free kicks like that” even though you know they must have been watching the ball not the incident.
Yeah, I hate it when they bag the guy for doing an innocuous push but not the guy flopping.
