Round 4 Game day v bri$vega$

Yeah, I hate it when they bag the guy for doing an innocuous push but not the guy flopping.
Dempsey from Geelong got fined for staging, this needs to be cracked down on, or we need to be better at falling over when we get touched after taking a mark.
It also seems the Ashcrofts are untouchable.

We all know which team will be playing when the staging crackdown starts.

How do the umpires know when to pay a free kick to an Ashcroft?

The Ashcroft will tell them.

(Also applicable to Daici.)

Yesterday was the proof to the adage that the key to happiness (not success) is low expectations. Who knew a 5 goal loss could be fun.

Played 3 decent quarters was a not bad loss to be honest

They announced that EVERY bag would be searched.

They weren't. I'm an MCC member, we walked through the first metal detector arches then there were bag search tables and security with wands. After going through the arches there was a line building up at the bag search table ahead of me, I had a small sling bag but because of the line security just waved me through without a search or even being scanned by the wands.

Yesterday was the most fun I can ever remember watching the Tigers lose a match.

Firstly, it was Brisbane, who are one of the less offensive oppo to drop a game against.

Secondly, they had an uncharacteristically accurate goal kicking day, which probably inflated the margin, especially early on. If you look back at the Lions goal-kicking track record of recent years, they are usually far more likely to be 8-16 rather than 16-8 at 3/4 time.

Nextly, barring a few nervous misses by our 18-year-olds early on, we could've applied far more scoreboard pressure on the reigning champs. That will get better across time, and actually did get better as the match progressed.

Finally, without wins and losses dictating our relative success this season, it's just so enjoyable being able to go to a match and gauge progress by the evolution of our youngsters. It's irrelevant how bad Macca is, and anything we now get out of Lynchy, Broady, Nank, Vlas etc is a total bonus - they owe us Tiger fans nothing, and are doing a sterling job of leading the rookies. They must be an absolute inspiration to our young blokes.

More of yesterday please Tiges.

FRUSTRATED BUT PROUD: YZE HAS MIXED EMOTIONS

Tyler Lewis
Richmond coach Adem Yze said he had “mixed emotions” about his side’s 28-point loss to reigning premier the Brisbane Lions at the MCG on Saturday.

The Tigers fought out every quarter to lead the Lions 34-6 in the match’s overall red-time score, but were beaten heavily in important areas across the ground. One of those areas was the inside 50 battle which Brisbane won 60-40.

After three weeks of Richmond only producing a half of football, Yze was pleased with its fight but “frustrated” by its enormous territory loss.

“We put a lot of work into our mental mastery and staying really engaged in a game, if you look across the competition the momentum swings in a game are just getting bigger and bigger,” he said. “With a young group we’re learning and growing in that area and at times it could be positive momentum.

“A part of that as coach is proud of that effort but at the same time frustration, it’s mixed emotions in the coaches’ box and in the rooms.

“We are proud of our fight, we didn’t give up and our spirit, that can’t waiver, but at the same time there’s frustration on allowing easy scores, nine goals from stoppage, we couldn’t get it out of our back end, dominated on territory. There’s things within our game that just weren’t good enough, so it’s mixed emotions really.”

Top draft picks Sam Lalor and Luke Trainor played promising games while second-year small forward Seth Campbell kicked multiple goals for the fourth straight week. Yze praised Campbell’s effort as an example of the jump up to AFL level after his first season last year.

“Going back through time it caught up on him, he needed a week off because he hadn’t played 18 games in a row before,” Yze said.

“He was still learning the caper, took a massive step forward and then this year he’s taken another step forward.

“He looks like a quality small forward – potent, hard to play on, clever and he’s hitting the scoreboard – but it’s his pressure. Today I couldn’t unsee him getting up the ground, filling the corridor, spoiling – I don’t think he’s ever had a spoil in his life – but he’s starting to value all of those aspects in his game.”

Jon Pierik in The Age summed it up nicely for me …….

“This is where the Tigers are at. It's as much about moments and chains of play, rather than four-quarter victories, as they reshape their list under Yze.”

Two things can be true. There is no doubt Brisbane coasted in a game they were never going to lose, just firing the afterburners long enough when they needed to to put the game to bed. We saw our dynasty team have many similar games. It's a long season; they got a comfortable win without taxing themselves.

But there were also many promising signs for us. Laceout Sammy Lalor is some kind of decision-making and ball use savant. Immaculate by hand and foot; the most efficient delivery to the most effective target. Mature beyond his years: he truly does seem to have Trent Cotchin's head on Dustin Martin's shoulders.

Super Seth Campbell has all the tools to be a very good player for a long time and has the pace, skill and running ability we sorely need. Luke Trainor looks a lock for 200 games. Tom Brown can rip holes through zones. He has leveled up from last year and with five more disposals a game will level up again. Steely Green had his best game and used the ball nicely. We moved the ball brilliantly at times.

Sonsie aside, our duds are giving what they can (and maybe he is too. Maybe that's all he's capable of).

Armstrong has an admirably-chiseled jib. And he was our third-most exciting young tall forward on the day for anyone who watched the twos. Banks was pretty good coming off the concussion. I think he's the fourth of our 2021 five but he's showing signs he could make it as a hard-running wing or HBF.

Trezise and Smith are goers worth persisting with.

Miller looks at the level. Miller!

And we have Balta, Gibcus, Lefau, Clarke, Smillie, Hotton, Faull, Sims, Alger, McAuliffe, Gray and Ryan to come in at various points. And two-top five picks, plus a father-son looking good. (And another one next year, and finally an NGA kid.)

My brother took his kids and reported, "Very relaxing loss". I replied, "They all are this year, bruz."

For a team coming off a two-win season and looking at another lowly finish, we are in a remarkably positive position as a club. We are miles ahead of rabble like Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne, West Coast and Norf.

This is going to be a fun ride.

I agree totally with all this.

For me, it is how we bring all these moving parts together and ensure consistency and improvement across the whole squad - all little steps but we are seeing these steps occur much more quickly than I and a lot of the footy world anticipated (remember the zero win predictions by many).

Once we get over the next 2 games (Freo and Suns), the 4 of the next 5 games are ones where we will know how quickly we are climbing those steps. We have Melbourne, Eagles, lolnorf and Essadone all at the G - with only the Dawks slotted amounts them. I am pretty confident that the club will want a few wins from that block - one of those learning steps is to learn how to win and right now I reckon we are a fair chance to jump a few more steps before our bye.

Youth brings energy and youth feed off this energy - somehow Yze has ensured we have bottled this in spades during the early parts of a season where it looked bleak in every direction you looked - the Carlton ambush was a masterstroke.

Interesting after the game, might be the Cotch influence, but Charlie Cameron spending time with Kaleb Smith giving tips, Lachie Neale having a good chat with Lalor as well. Almost likeable the Lions, gracious winners.

Lachie Neale on MMM after the game was gracious as well, predicting good things in 18 months for the group.

Hard to watch us getting schooled, but interesting to watch Brisbane movement.

They run in waves and always have someone there to receive.

They clearly have confidence that their midfield will win the contested ball, such that there backs run up to support.

Such a contrast to our midfield who win the ball only to have no one to give it to.

Obviously we are missing Rioli, but ot made me wonder whether we are missing that runner/skillet. Kaleb Smith, Tom Browne, Shorty, Banks presumably are all picked to play that role.

Perhaps rather than the cattle, either we are trained to play defensively or lack the confidence to run off and support. Might explain why despite so many more Brisbane I50's, they were contained.

Anyway, a great benchmark team to play and learn from.

Happy to hear the thoughts of others.

Haven’t read the whole thread on the game as I was at the game so apologies if this has been discussed already. Just want to comment on the security measures today getting in and what was everyone else’s experience. Got there at 2.30 to find that the gates didn’t open until 3. I thought that was unusual since they are normally opened at least a couple of hours before the game , not just over an hour before. They announced that EVERY bag would be searched. Didn’t have a problem with that. I was about 5 metres from the entry. I noticed that only ONE body scanner was open to walk through (was 2 but joined together), the other 3 weren’t manned or opened. Everyone was funneled through this one entrance. By the time the gates opened, I looked around to see that behind me were 2 lines at least 100 metres long. I thought to myself that they are going to miss the first bounce. It took me 10 minutes to get through to the body scanner. And as I predicted I got diverted to get my bag checked. I found that there was only ONE table for the bag checks, and one security guy doing the metal detector wand for EVERYONE entering. I mean wtf! I’m glad security was more thorough and had no issue getting searched etc but why the *smile* did they have LESS security personnel at the entrances to allow people in? I know they weren’t expecting a huge crowd (over 42,000 I believe turned up), but will this be the same for bigger games? If so then there’s no point turning up. The gates don’t open to give patrons enough time to be searched and the anger of missing a big chunk of the game will get people’s blood boiling. Also, I didn’t notice any security during the game like I normally do. What’s going on?
Did anyone who went miss seeing any of the game because of waiting to get in?
MCC n AFL incompetence ramped up to extreme levels. Luckily arrived fairly early n took about 20 to 25 minutes to reach the 2 scanners at gate 3. Walked through the scanner, no bag check, no wanding, just all good move along. Still easily got to my seat a good 20 minutes before game time. But the queue was still huge when I got in and then they simply started to rush people through as the starting sirens were blowing. If this crap continues over the next couple of weeks I certainly won't bother wasting my time standing in line for the Anzac or Dream time games for an hour or more.
Pea brains should simply have gone back to the old bag checks n wanding that they've managed to master since 9/11 and there wouldn't have been an issue.
