Round 6 : Dreamtime at the 'G'

Received this in an e-mail from the RFC.

The Long Walk 2006 launch will also help cement this as a very special night. The launch will take place at Birrurung Marr (below Federation Square, on the Yarra) from 3pm on Saturday afternoon. In the lead-up to the match, Michael Long will lead the Long Walk participants in a symbolic walk across William Barak Bridge to the MCG with 1000 of the walkers to head on to the famous turf as part of the pre-match entertainment.

Registration to walk on the ground is via a $5 donation, for which you will receive a Long Walk Glo Stick to carry on to the MCG. The lights will be turned off during the walk on to the ‘G’, and during the pre-match entertainment.

Please note that registered walkers on the MCG will need to have purchased a normal general admission ticket to re-enter the ground to watch the match. All other Long Walk launch walkers will need to have purchased, or be in possession of, a ticket into the stadium to watch the pre-game entertainment and Dreamtime clash. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster before May 6, or at the ground on the day unless sold out beforehand. Richmond and Essendon are both donating a portion of the match ticket sales to the Long Walk campaign.

For all participation details and times for the 2006 Long Walk launch on Saturday, go to www.thelongwalk.com.au and for general Long Walk enquiries, call ESP on (03) 9421 3000.

I'm all for us getting a regular Game that will be backed by the AFL as a DrawCard Game. Surely the AFL will fully support this "cause".

All that needs to happen is to find a suitable date that this event could be staged each year, rather than just whenever the AFL fixtures Richmond Vs Essendon in the draw.

There isn't many dates to choose from.

Easter Monday, Anzac Day Eve (Can't happen due to Essendons Anzac Day commitment), Queens Birthday (Although I am all for State of Origin Footy on this Date)....or Good Friday.

Could we have another "Blockbuster" game annually against Carlton?

Does anyone know whether or not the AFL or either club is bussing in any kids from remote Aboriginal schools for the match? I recall seeing that Port had been doing just that over recent years with kids from all over remote South Australia...remember seeing the kids from Oodnadatta getting their photo taken with the players.

Be fantastic if we could do something similar for the Dreamtime game...organise it as their school camp/trip and put on a great day for them. Wouldn't hurt to do similar things for all kids in remote areas as a part of membership drive if we could get some funding to help out with the cost...might be worth floating to the AFL.

last year there was a match beforehand between two teams from the NT (sorry names escape me), I would imagine be similar again.

Cheers mk, shame it's not televised on Fox.

Will be here in Adelaide thank god due to the Showdown.

'Dreamtime'.

I was was wondering what everyone thought of the 'Dreamtime Blockbuster'?

Could it reach the specatacle as the Anzac Day clash? Were people happy with the pre-match entertainment?

Are such events that involve the RFC in big games crucial to the development of our playing group to gain experience when they play finals in front of massive crowds?

What is everone's thoughts, have we understood what 'Dreamtime is all about?

Re: 'Dreamtime'.

I reckon there will be about 75,000 people at the next Dreamtime match. It's only gonna get better. Great games like last night give the clash credibility, and that brings the crowds. Its also a good way to underline the contribution indigenous players have made to the game we all love.

We're lucky to be a part of this one.

Re: 'Dreamtime'.

I'd love to say that the pre-match entertainment honoured the occasion...but it really didnt. A whole heap of famous people with links to indigenous matters singing...it did nothing for me. Plus those white things on the ground...don't know what they were. And people waving red and yellow glow sticks...ultra classy.

Fail, from my point of view.

The atmosphere afterwards, and during the game, however, was magnificent. If it takes a 'dreamtime' occasion to get that kind of atmosphere, then I guess I'll get used to the singing. But no, it wasn't the same as Anzac Day...but it *could* get there, conceivably.

All respect to the Richmond and Essendon footy clubs for taking it up, though.

Re: 'Dreamtime'.

Does the Dreamtime event mean we will recuit another Aboriginal player in November?
Seems to me, if Richmond & Essendon want to play the Dreamtime event, Aboriginal players will be required. How does a game like this entertain the Aboriginal & Football community, if no Indeginous players are available?

Re: 'Dreamtime'.

good question skills

i was surprised to see patty ryder dropped for the game

Maybe you can make it an assignment Skills and work out how many potential indigenous boys could nominate in the next draft, surely either the Tigers or the Bummers might be interested in one.

If they want to make it Dreamtime, play the game in Arnhem Land;
As alternative for pre match entertainment, give two Abotiginal Teams the chance to play on the once sacred land (we now call the MCG);
Hand out history books to the general public and educate them about how much we dont know.

Agreed. Five years this will be huge. Part of the fixture for good now.. Two icon Melbourne clubs with massive followings whose jumpers make up the indigenous falg.  As long as we don't do anything stupid at board level, like we did with the season opener V Collingwood, this game will grow and grow.

Wouldn't think so. We take the best palyer to fill our needs come our time at the draft table. Players like JON, Tambo, Lovett, Lovett-Murray didn't get on there clubs list because they are indeginous, they got there because they are good footballers.
Playing JON last nite may have been a semi-marketing based choice but he wasn't picked for that game in last years draft.

God no... that large aboriginal man singing with renee geyer was absolutely terrible.

But I think that overall the night was a big success. Great crowd, great game, great finish  :hihi.

i may just add that i think it is a tad unfair that essendon get to compete in two blockbuster events yearly, while most don't even have the oppurtunity once.
Those that play in the anzac day match say that it's on par with finals matches in it's intensity and crowd involvement. I remember Nick Reiwoldt saying on the Gospel that he doesn't like the match because he doesn't get to play in it, and that alot of players feel that way.
And of all clubs, why should Essendon get that privelage? They suck!

You've lost the plot bro.  This is our chance to play a blockbuster (have you forgotten the other 2 teams that play on Anzac Day), a chance for our club to be involved in splitting the gate takings, an opportunity for our sponsors to get their names advertised (not to mention future potential sponsors to come on board), experience for our players in front of big crowd, and you want to take the game to Arnhem Land to be played by two indeginous teams. :hihi

I suggest you keep listening to the Back Street Boys.

I happen to have very refined taste in music, and that man was bad.

Its not just about the blockbuster opportunities, but hey it would be great to establish the Dreamtime as a blockbuster, its about leading the way in Indigenous and 'White' Australian relationships through the great things we learn about life from a tough sport like FOOTY.

The Dreamtime message is just as strong as the ANZAC message so a blockbuster would be a good way to pay our respects to all who went before us.

Excellent point RT, that's the whole meaning of Dreamtime.

Your refined music selection should tell you, the likes of Renee Geyer & Paul Kelly dont work on albums with amatuers - Kutcha Edwards is not Robbie Williams.
