Ruck problems (merged)

Re: The Irony of our Ruck problems!

It's pretty simple,

Pattison is not a ruckman, was not drafted to be one.

Poor list management that the Club is forcing him to play there

How could you say Cameron Wood is much better then Pattison, he can't even get a game in Brisbane!

Agree,I think you'll find that Patto will be in though.

Must be, surely. Even Richo is not sure bet to run a game out insofar as recurring injuries are concerned. Patto in is laydown.

As for Patto getting past 2007 - Andy Collins rates him very well. Is a fierce competitor and is improving. :shhh He'll be around a while yet ToO.

I hope you're right pharace.
You can't fault the kids attitude only his footskills.
I'm just not sure where he's going to fit into the scheme of things yet.
He'll get more opportunities. Good luck to him.

Sure to be at least around in 2008 & hopefully longer.

Think he still has a year to run at the end of this year.
I hope he plays this week, Richo is not going to do it all and need to leave Polly at CHB.
With Simmo and Schulz unlikely starters I hope Patto and Riewoldt are the inclusions.
Still think Patto is better ruck than forward just needs to develop with time.
Ruckman drafted in that draft Wood, Meesen (though injured) and Maric are not automatic inclusions.

Ruckman do take a while to develop
Hudson didnt start until he was 25
Charman spent first 3 years as a third back up to Keating/mCdonald and has just come on last 3 years
Hille took 3-4 years to be regular
Fraser spent his early days as a forward as did Lade (who was back up to Primus).
Sandilands only really came on last year.
McIntosch has only came this year and he was drafted year before Patto.

This just backs up my feeling that using a high pick to attain a young ruckman in the draft is a high risk. It means it can take 5-6-7 years to find out if they have what it takes or not. Use lower picks or pick up ruckmen from the secondary comps later on.

I do think Patto was a wasted pick. Told he has a big engine but it must be a diesel engine because he seems so slow to me, and not extremely co-ordinated. Maybe I've seen him at his worst games.

By Matt Burgan from Sportal doing his preview of the AFL draft

21 - HAWTHORN - Adam Pattison
(Northern Knights), 5 March 1986, 198cm, 90kg

As the year progressed, so did Pattison, who is now right up there as a late first-round or early second round selection in the 2004 Draft. An athletic key forward/ruckman, Pattison won the TAC Cup Coaches Award and the Northern Knights best-and-fairest award in 2004. He was also named at centre half-forward in this year's TAC Cup team of the year, while his continued rise during 2004 culminated in being named captain for Victoria in the inaugural National Bank's AFL under-18 Rising Stars Cup against The Allies, which was played during grand final week, at Optus Oval. A strong marker, Pattison also had a terrific Draft Camp, having recorded a level 14.2 in the beep test, while he ran the three-kilometre time-trial in 10 minutes 46 seconds. His rating has lifted considerably in recent times and the Hawks are genuinely interested in him, as are St Kilda, potentially at selection 17 and Carlton with its second choice at 25. Kirkby, Maric and McQualter will also be closely monitored at this stage.

He's certainly not an agile big guy, or one that is going to blow an opponent away over the first 20 metres on a lead, but he'll have his place in the future, no doubt about that.
