PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Given yesterday's media conference letting us know that we badly need a ruckman I want to share my recollection of our 2004 super draft.

I was in my car listening to the 2004 National Draft on SEN. While Lids and Bling was top of mind, so was my hope that we pick up a reputable ruckman. Any core Tigers supporter would have known that our ruck stocks were nearing an end. I was really hoping that we would pick up Cameron Wood (204 cm) as he was touted as the best ruckman of the then draft.

I was wrapped with Lids and even more so when we got Bling (and still am) with 1 and 4. And then I waited for Wood. Meyer at 12, Pattison at 16. Wood at 18 then Polo at 20. Gone!

We could say, yep, we got five good ones. But we missed on Wood and now we need a specialist ruckman - who's left. So how did it pan out?

Fabian Deluca (Port) went at 35. Then we picked up McGuane at 36. Ivan Maric (Crows) went at 40 then we picked up Dean Limback at 52. Simon Taylor (Hawks) went at 53. With our final pick we selected Mark Graham at 65. Chris Bryan (then Blues now Pies) went at 73.

I thought in 2005 a ruckman would have been a certainty. While I have high hopes for JON, the Tigers could have picked up Mitchell Clark (alebit a backup ruckman at 198 cm) who went to the Lions for pick 9. Brisbane have now got three top line ruckman for the next 10 years - they also picked up Matthew Leuenberger (203 cm) last year.

If you'd like to stress yourself out, go to www.thedrafter.net. You can disappoint yourself by looking who we could have got if luck fell our way. You pick a player and it shows you who went after them. Its a shocker. Here are a few examples:

21 Alex Gilmore - 43 Brett Peake
37 Tom Roach - 61 Michael Rischitelli
53 Daniel Jackson - 55 Sam Fisher
47 Billy Nichols - 53 Adam Selwood
62 Daniel Sithorp - 64 Nick Malcevski
33 Daniel Rodan - 58 Dane Swan
63 Adam Houliahan - 71 Brian Harris

Please note that this is not meant to bag players or selectors. It just highlights that if they've got a plan I'd like to know what its been (they said its half way). Did we need last week to happen for them to find this out that we really need a top line ruckman?
