Scoring Stats in all our 3rd Quarters

Decided to do some research on our dismal 3rd Quarters.
Up to Rd 7 V St.k our 3rd Quarters were very good.
(Although you could argue our Rd 1 3rd Quarter wasn't too good!)
From Rd 8 till now they have been terrible.

Here are the breakdowns:

Carl 3.0
Kang 3.4
Coll 5.5
Freo 4.2
Dogs 6.5
Haw 5.3
St.k 4.4

and then it gets ugly. ???

Gee 1.3
Ess 2.2
Syd 3.1
Ade 2.2
Mel 2.2

I was surprised with these stats as I just assumed all our 3rd Quarters were bad, but this is not the case.
Just the last 5 weeks.

I'm not sure why that is. I don't think it's fitness as our 4th Quarters have yielded 3 or more goals every week except Rd 3. (Increase it to 4 or more last quarter goals..We've done this on 7 out of 12 times!)

Interesting to see Uncle Wallet is looking at Neil Craig's recent tactic of "simulating a half time break during their training" where they actually go inside and then come out to start (3rd Q) second half of training after they were falling away during their 3rd Quarters. Has anyone been to training this week to see if he have done same or are we "tricking things up abit" as Plough said indoors away from prying eyes!

Please discuss.

It just happens that separating the Saints and Cats games was a week off for the Dreamteam v Vics game. Coincidence ???

Most of the time in the early season we had very slow starts to games.

The current third quarter fade-out thing is a function of personnel, rotations IMO.

ATM we plan to put the game away in the second quarter. And we rotate our best mids through the middle in this period. Often we save a fresh Bling to give us a some extra bite/pep late in the piece.

By half time we had thirty six inside fifties against Melbourne. We failed to capitalise on our first quarter I50s because we had Richo out of the arc and they had Paul Johnson pushing into the hole. Jack and whoever weren't big enough to hurt him or mark over him. And the I50 supply was a bit too based on the bomb.

In the second quarter we had all our matchups right and they were going into a second quarter holding pattern. Tuck fully took over the clearances engaging in some hardcore inside footy. We had 19 inside fifties for the quarter (this is a massacre) and our running game went ballistic.

By the third quarter we were gassed. Youngsters without naturally big tanks like Jack and Mitch got a bit slower. Richo and Simmo (knees) went out of the game. Tuck got lost outside at times. Bling went into the middle and was caned. And in the general the lesser players got bigger roles. Polak leaked a bit too. So did JON. Cotchin drew their captain and b&f to shut him down and hasn't the tank for a second half anyway ATM.

But despite all that we beat Melbourne by two-ten. Gave away cheap frees. Smashed them at every indicator. Missed countless easy shots. Played badly for some periods. Carried two injured seniors. And gave inexperienced players big jobs.

Our plan was to blow them away in the first half and then go into a holding/experimentation pattern. That's been the plan for a few weeks now.

We fade because we haven't got the depth in our rotations and we chose to go hard in the second quarter.

Always a pleasure to read your analysis Capn Jack. Very erudite stuff!

Thanks for the stats glove...but I'm sure in the saints game they came out and hit hard early on so we where put scored then.

Richo is usually played out of the game @ the start of the 3rd. We need to put him where the action is!

There wont be any chances against Port this week

You’re in a rich vein of form Jack, keep up the good work.

I would add that when we have the throttle open we play a very energy intensive game and our players hit the wall in the 3rd. We don’t have the muscle to turn things into an winning arm wrestle. When the opposition get a run on we can’t counter because when the big boys start beating us up in the centre we lose consecutive clearances and the flood gates open.

22 fresh badBlings couldn't bite through a marshmallow.

Classic type to add bite, Hancho. Didn't work Sunday but it usually does. You've got a blind spot with Bling.

Interesting thoughts, the only thing I would say is that the 3rd quarter isn't known as the premiership quarter for nothing.

I reckon something happened to Simmonds in the state game as he hasn't been the same since then. His 3rd quarters have been particularly bad and I wonder if he's carrying an injury and can't run out the game. His form up to the Geelong game was fantastic.

Having read some of his previous posts Jack, where his views on Bling differ greatly from this, I would say its more like young Hancho has a screw loose.....

He looks like he can;t jump. His ruckwork has looked very, very ordinary of late.

It was a knee, I reckon, Maleny. Could be cartilage. Maybe some other crap in it. Slight PCL. Dunno.

McLeod did something too. Hasn't had a kick since. There are others.

OTOH Lids got the jets back not long after the week off.

And on the premiership quarter, IanG, Esserden changed it to the second in 2000. The games were all over at half time. Unless North was in front of them by ten goals. ;D

Colonel, fully agree on the swept aside at the stoppages thing. Very distressing. The big mids go in like tanks after you occupy. To stop you getting blown away at the stoppages. But we aint got enough or the quality.

And Djevv, your mum is erudite. ;D

I don't understand why we don't keep up with teams in the first and second Qs and then pulverize after half time?

The premiership quarter, it is called this for a reason yes?

Maybe we will in the future?

If you're right Jack then why risk playing him. why not get it fixed - give Angus a go or elevate Cartlidge and see what happens. I truly don't understand playing players if they are injured and it is affecting their performance??

Well after starting this discussion piece, below are yesterday's scoring stats for the 3rd Quarter:
7 goals 3 behinds!!!
:clap :clap :clap
Which is our best 3rd Quarter of the year (beating Rd5 v Dogs previous best of 6.5) :clap

Playing a team we have beaten on their home ground only once (before yesterday), interstate where I heard a stat before the game our recent interstate record is something like 5 wins out of 33 games we decide to play our best 3rd Quarter ??

What does this tell us?

Maybe we read too much into stats, and if you have the ticker and desire for the contest, stats count for
(I'll borrow a Rex-ism here).............

Jack Sheizen ! ;D
