& this is precisely why all this over reacting worries me.

Might as well just drop the kids off at ballet school now, won't be long before it's merged with footy training.

Yes,I don't think we need to start bringing in new laws.

I imagine theres some 'unsportsmanlike conduct' charge or ' bringing the game into disrepute' or something they could use.Just fine Selwood and be done with it.He has to carry around the stigma of what he said anyway.

I don't think he'll be mouthing off much in future.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

The squeaky-clean image that the AFL is attempting to promulgate these days is not reality. Contact sport is a civilised subsititute for war, and it's tough and dirty in the trenches. Many will disagree but I would tolerate a Richmond player being accused of similar if it meant we'd won last year's flag. Criticism of West Coast over sledging reeks of that being levelled at the Australian cricket team by other (losing) nations. Storm in a teacup.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

How did he bring the game into disrepute?

It was only the reaction of a hot headed fruitcake that brought it to the publics attention.

If he had reacted like any other player would, and smashed him (legally) next time they played ... No one would have been the wiser.

The comments are only in the public domain due to #a - Headlands whinging and #b - Freo's attempts to use the comments to get Headland out of a well deserved suspension.

Look i agree meltiger.Personally I wouldn't do anything but you know what the AFL is like.

I'm just looking for a compromise that'll appease those baying for a pound of flesh in preference to introducing new ridculous sledging laws.Otherwise Milhous et al will be going about this for months

Slap on the wrist and move on.

Agree mate. Sorry if my reaction seemed a little over the top, I am just genuinely amazed at the outcry.

If they suspend him, in the same week they re-change the rules regarding striking, we may as well pack up and go home.

(If I was Fraser and St Kilda, I would sue the AFL for restraint of trade, when comparing the way this Victorian based footballer is being treated in comparison to how they treated a certain player based a little bit north of Victoria in Sep 2005)

Exactly.

Whole incident says more about Selwood and the W C culture than it does Des H.....even if Selwood's version is correct.

Hang about you cannot hang a man before this goes in front of the panel.

In a local derby with a fierce rivarly and a crowd of 40k going crazy your telling me that there is no chance that maybe just maybe Dessie may have made a honest mistake and misheard?

Way too many variables for us to draw a conclusion.

This may have nothing to do with the WC culture and maybe a misunderstanding.

But the WCE do have a lot of ground to make up on the PR front. Watch for a whole lot of hopsital visits and photos of Eagles playing a role in the community.

Regardless of what he said, Selwood is being dragged through the media for a sledge and things like bringing the game into disrupute are thrown around but Daniel Kerr gets no penaly for flying drugs across the country, associating with drug dealers and coming under police scrunity.

Imagine if Daniel Kerr wins the Brownlow this year, imagine Andy D trying hard not to vomit in his mouth as he gives the medal to the fairest and best player in the land. Now I agree that if Kerr wins the medal he should get it but the AFL would be spitting chips if this panned out. I can smell a fix coming on.

The AFL are the moral police, but not intrested in the real police stuff.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

True scoop. I have my money on Kerr but wouldnt that be a turn up. Very likely to happen.

Yes we dont know the facts all we are going on is what we read which could be totally a misunderstanding BUT lets get this one thing clear. I have NO problem with certain sledging and NO i wouldnt have gone to the media with this.

The AFL will not bring any new law in , but maybe might fine Selwood and Headlands suspension reversed? I dont know. All i do is there are certain things best not said. When i played being of different background copped a fair bit but just made me play that much harder and better and when that player was there for the taking i tackled him hard and made sure he knew i was around. But bringing (allegedly) his daughters name into it and the rest(allegedly) i am sorry but THAT ISNT ON..........

Enough

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

Des brought his daughter onto the pitch with him in the shape of a big tattoo of her picture on his shoulder. It's an odd tattoo to have to say the least. I'm sure Selwood's spark to actually sledge about the daughter was because she was there staring at him.

Seriously, some on here are being a bit too PC about it all. It's a bloody football match at the highest level. I'd be disappointed in the tigers if they didn't try and work their way into their opponents head enough to put them of their game. This has nothing to do with West Coast culture. It's purely the result of a nutter losing it in the most stupid way over a sledge that I am sure has been used throughout the game throughout the decades.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

What a load of crap!!!
Nothing will happen to Selwood & nothing should happen Selwood.

Nothing is wrong with sledging.......except if it's racial related.
Selwood did go a bit far but he doesn't deserve any action take against him.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

As an issue it's interesting. I don't know exactly what Selwood said.

Suppose a player said something about committing a crime against the children of another. Either that he had committed the crime or that he would.

I think you're getting into the territory where the AFL doesn't have to legislate. There are laws in place. And rightly.

It would raise questions about the culture at the club involved if the idea came fro a member of the club or was condoned by the club.

With footy clubs, I don't worry that the people involved are stupid. I worry that, inspite of the obvious moral bankruptcy of individuals within the sport, they are respected.

Who at WCE thinks that Selwood, if he said such things, may have been within his rights? How many at other clubs approve?

Any man who says such things anywhere wants a hiding. And it doesn't have to be administered manually. Likewise club officials who do not sanction the player and anyone else involved.

BTW how would you like to be a WCE sponsor ATM? Jeeez.

If this si true it is absolutely disgraceful by young Selwood. Terrible form

Agree Shawry,If i was Headland & Selwood did say it,I'd be looking at 15-20 games on the sidelines!

Strange attitude Jukes. How can you think racial comments are unacceptable but paedophilic ones are ok? I'd find it hard to differentiate between the two. Both are abhorrent.

If Selwood is found guilty of the alleged comments his name will be mud in the football community.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

Selwood tried to get under Headlands skin, put him off his game, and it worked.
Knowing what he does now about how the player/media ect responded, I bet he'd love to take the words back. He's only a kid himself and most likely feeling like a real idiot.

Having said that, I in no way condone what he said and he should be punished - In the form of a fine and a public apology to Des and his family.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

I'm amazed. Things were allegedly said during a sledge. It's part of the game.

Seriously, there are some supporters becoming as soft as the tigers are playing at the moment.

Allegedly. It's one man's word against the other at the moment.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

Yes, I am. The sledge had nothing to do with his daughter personally. It was purely to get into Des's head, and it worked better then Selwood could ever have dreamed.

Why was the daughter used as a sledge ? Not because Selwood is a kiddie fiddler or because he planned it out, but simply because Des carries around a huge stupid tattoo of her likeness on his shoulder. Des brought his daughter into the game, Selwood used it as a means to get inside his head.

Re: Adam Selwood/Des Headland

Headland was hearing things, he just likes to swing a fist just for the sake of it. I believe Selwood is innocent.
