Baloo you can't be serious - a stupid tattoo? He shows pride in his daughter and then that makes it fair game for Selwood to allegedly call her a *smile* and say he *smile* her last night - about a six year old no less.

It's disgraceful and can't believe anyone would accept it.

Mate I played footy - and there's sledging, and then there's abuse. Is racially abusing someone just sledging? For me i'd rather be called something to do with the colour of my skin, than something as brutal as what was allegedly said about my six year old daughter. I would of put the bloke into next year - and if it does come out as true - thats where Selwood belongs!

What happened to fair dinkum sledging now.....you know...'sticks and stones may beak my bones, but names will never hurt me'....but now the AFL has made a rod for its back with their ridiculous racial viilification garbage, where it seems only one race seems to get offended, and now we have poor Dessy Headland.... :'( :'( :'( because someone said some unsavoury things about him and his daughter.
Well, boo-hoo!

AFL is soft as...with not only their ridiculous rule changes each year, but now more political correct garbage about what you are allowed to say, and what you are not allowed to say on the field.
Who cares?
Its all about kicking goals and winning....and if the opposition want to waste their time name-calling, make them pay on the scoreboard...thats the best way.

The whole thing is SOFT!

Christ, we don't know what's been said. He could very easily have said "Who's the *smile* on your arm?". Does that change your opinion on the cruxifiction of Selwood ?

Most fathers have undeniable pride in their daughters, but I don't see too many tattooing a portrait of them on their shoulder. I guess it's subjective, but I do think it's a stupid tattoo.

If its found to be true that Sellwood said those words about a six year old in order to provoke Headland then that is conduct which brings the game into disrepute.
I'd give him no less than 12 weeks.
If its the fact that these words were said and true that they caused Headland to lose control and act in defence of his daughter, then Headland should be cautioned, with no other penalty..

The point of a sledge is to put some1 off their game... it happened perfectly! Sorry there once was a rule what happens on the field stays on the field! In society is different to on a footy field! Over reaction.... didnt any1 here grow up... the your mum jokes??? des headland obvisouly knows its untrue and was just a smart arse comment! it was not premediated....

Are you saying that despite laws against racial vilification for instance and laws against deliberately provoking a breach of the peace, that AFL players should be allowed to say and do as they like.

Ditto AFL rules on bringing the game into disrepute. Are you saying players can say what they like irrespective of whether they bring the game into disrepute.

Naa there are rules which all of us including AFL players, are required to abide by and cop it if we don't.

Provocation is not an acceptable defence at the tribunal. Headland should go IMO.

Will hopefully make up for the game last year when he tried to take Pettifer's (I think, can't exactly remember) head off but just missed. Still can't believe he didn't get suspended for that.

I cant understand how people are seeing the "football" side of this. Any attack against a minor in this manner is disgusting and because it was on the football field, there should be no holding back.

Des Headland does look like he has a few screws missing, he does go over the top, but boy, from my point of view he was too soft this time!

If the AFL doesnt make an example of this type of comment, then they have totally lost the plot.

Just because its on the footy field it shouldnt be taken lightly!!! Should that mass murderer in the USA have shot 44 footballers? The AFL would suspend him and let him go because it was on the footy field. Selwood needs a smack in the mouth, what ever happened to respect??? That word isnt in the dictionary these days.

I have played footy all my life and I'd even say I am a sledger, but this isnt sledging. A personal attack on one's family is not on at all.

Pedofillia is a serious issue in the aboriginal community also and no doubt Des is aware of that.

Please, lets not go down the usual path of this being "racially motivated". ::)

What Selwood said may have been disgusting, terrible, a disgrace....whatever....but anyone who has played sport has heard similar (if not worse) from the opposition.
Its all part of the mindgames involved.

Look at Zidane at the World Cup, as a prime example.

I have no problem with Headland having a go at Selwood....what my complaint is, is that Selwood is being vilified for saying a few words to Headland.
So what?

Zidane at the world cup is a great example, he should have kicked his head off not headbutted him. It proves the most PROFESSIONAL sportsmen and women do not like this. It isnt sport!! Sport's are not about abusing families. There is a line, the world was against the Italian and Australia is against Selwood!

This isnt a racial matter, but because this is a big problem within Des' community, he may have had even more of an issue with this, than the "tough" boys out there.

I've played representative football, I played TAC cup, over 200 games so far, not one on field comment has disgusted me more than this one. Its pathetic and I've never heard this crap.

I usually see the obvious and the big picture, but if Selwood gets let off, then the AFL are not treating footballers like human beings, but as gods gift to the earth. Police action should be taken against this, let alone the AFL stepping in. Its personal!

Fair enough we have different values and beliefs, but I cant believe how anyones values or beliefs can just let this go.

Selwood is weak, if you need to go to this type of low to beat a good footballer, then you are a cat and dont have true beliefs in your own abilities.

That's just it, it isn't personal. As others have remarked, the same comment off the field is personal.
