At the risk of disturbing a hornet's nest, I find it interesting that the Adam Selwood/Des Headland issue has become so big. While in no way condoning what Selwood is alleged to have said, it is by no means the worst thing that I have heard on a footy field. Had Headland dealt with Selwood in a different manner (like simply calling him a paedophile or dishing out a hefty hip and shoulder), rather than completely going off the deep end, this issue would not have come into the public arena.
Now I don't have children, so I may not be in the best position to judge Headland, not knowing the possible rage he would have felt with such an insult directed at his 6yo daughter, but personally I think he should have dealt with it in a more subtle way, like so many players have done in the past when confronted with such insults.
Perhaps I am naive. Does it show that Headland can be "got at" by other teams should he find himself in a high pressure final...? Will he now be a target for opposition teams trying to unsettle the Dockers...? Or does Selwood deserve to be maligned and punished for a highly inappropriate action - one that would not be tolerated in society outside football...?
